Ok, so I used to be massively addicted to K. I was taking up to 12.5g a day at one point. By the end of it, my insides were so messed up, unbearable stomach pains, pissing pains, I was in and out of hospital all the time and told if I carried on my bladder would be partially removed. So basically I did a lot.

Anyway, since then I got hooked on opiates (heroin and methadone mostly). I just had a look at this website: http://www.opioids.com/nmda/receptor.html and it talks about NMDA receptor stuff and opiates. I dont really understand it..

What I'm wondering is a few things:

Could I have done permanent damage to my NMDA receptors? and if so...

Am I just a pussy or have I possibly messed up my pain threshold levels, as I can't seem to handle pain anymore, especially opiate w/d's ?

Just wondering really, as I really did properly abuse K and it does seem now that I can't handle pain as well as everyone else.

It's the opioids that do that to you. Being high on opioids all the time, you get accustomed to not feeling pain, thus your natural pain resistance decreases - all the more since your body ceases to produce it's natural painkillers (endorphins etc.) Good news is that it's temporary, when you quit opioids you will eventually return to normal.

Antagonists cause receptor upregulation*, so that seems unlikely. As for permanent brain damage, the jury is still out, but if Olney's lesions do form in humans, you probably have them.

*except for the 5-ht2a and 5-ht2c receptors, iirc.
There are far more exceptions than this. I imagine this is particularly true for NMDA-antagonists as there are several different types (competitive, noncompetitive, uncompetitive...etc) at several different locations on the receptor-complex.

OP: The questions you ask are very difficult to answer, as I think the relationship between NMDA currents and opioid receptors is not fully-understood by science. One thing I can tell you is that Ketamine itself has some affinity for opioid receptors and does have many indirect effects on the opioid system. It is not inconceivable that you have permanently altered your pain response mechanisms. 12.5g of Ketamine per day is an INSANE ammount, and even though Ketamine is very safe as far as the brain is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if this dose is toxic.

Please disregard the Olney's lesions b/s as it has never been proven in humans, and even if it has, no one really knows why exactly these things are considered bad in the first place (other than the fact that they're shaped like holes).

Fuck I thought my ketamine use was way out of control when I'd go through 12g in a weekend, but a day - ooh your bladder must have hurt something horrible.

As for opiates, no I don't think the ket will have altered your response to them. As someone said it's probably dependant use of opioids that make you feel more sensitive to pain ATM

^ Hmm. I could be mistaken but I honestly had you in mind as a reference when I said K has affinity to opioid receptors =D.

(Perhaps I'm mistaken and confusing your reference for another compound?).

I was in rehab with a girl who was addicted to K and she had similar issues. Her bladder was detaching from her body and she was always in excruciating pain for various reasons.

I know a doctor (not exactly sure who) was actually using her for a study on K addiction and the issues you are discussing here. Even with proper use, this drug can still fuck up your insides. I will see if I can find any info on the study and if I happen to get lucky, I will post a link for you.

Good luck and I hope you manage to work out whatever is going on with you.

Yeah it is horrifically painful.

Some good info on the bladder damage and "K-cramps" here:

and a study here:
