Erowid is hosting a survey on frequent ecstasy use and the cravings for it. The survey can be found here for those who qualify: https://edu.surveygizmo.com/s3/933362/research

You are eligible to participate if you are in between the ages of 18 and 65, and have used ecstasy at least every other week for the past six months and at least 30 times over the course of your lifetime.

Good lord, what do they think we are doing? The frequency of use to qualify is absurd! I've used maybe 4 times a year at MAX!!!

That is a lot. I went through a phase 10 or 11 years ago when I did MDMA usually once a weekend for a few months. I wonder if they still want my opinions.

Its been once every 2 or 3 weeks for me to be totally truthful, after my first try back in february i left it a good 6 weeks but after that its been more frequent i must admit, kinda ruining it for myself i guess as i have been raving for over 10 years, but a rave without a roll doesnt seem the same anymore, lost my natural buzz, as they say.

I remember this study... it's not related to Erowid at all though lol

He's only looking for heavy users.... there are plenty of studies on the safe use of ecstasy... but who uses it like that? Not many...

To see what kind of problems can be found in heavy users, and craving/"addiction" to the drug...

I trust him not to skew the data to purposefully demonize the drug, he's an old raver apparently and he's doing this as a culminative project to get a degree in Drug Counseling... well, something like that at least.

Yes I saw this survey advertised yesterday on the front page and was amazed at the frequency of use. Anyway I'm over the age limit.

Hi everyone...

I am the researcher conducting this study. It is currently listed on several websites including:

Pillreports, bluelight (in drug studies), erowid, drugs-forum, MAPS, and hanover.edu.

I am looking for heavy end users, primarily becuase I am interested in the craving and this is most likely to occur in heavy-end users. But, I really support the use of MDMA/ecstasy in recreational ways as well as a medicine to treat several psychological disorders and related issues including depression, PTSD, anxiety, trauma.

I really do appreciate the community allowing me to conduct my research, even though it is on the MUCH smaller heavy-end using part of the community. My first publication regarding this topic is currently under review and I hope to provide it for anyone who wants it via these websites when it is published. My intent with this research is to get non-biased scientific data out there...

If you have any questions, feel free to ask....

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Folley! :) I am definitely not wanting to demonize the drug, but simply understand the complexity of heavy-end use.

I am an old (lol - 32) raver, and just for clarity in case anyone is interested, I am working on a PhD in clinical psychology and my focus is in addictive behaviors, harm reduction, craving, and stereotype threat.

Thanks again for the support in this forum. I literally could not conduct my research without it. :)

Best,
Alan

What is the best way to report?

^ I've been waiting to see the results for a while now, can't wait till they're out :)

So, I have the first phase analyzed and written up. I was waiting until that got published in a journal to post here, but I could also put together a brief summary of the results for the purpose of getting those to people who are interested.

What do you think?

Alan

I'll put something together.

I don't think that's fair to assume until the study is out.

Alan, I'd love to see a sneak peak! I'm sure the community would like to see it as well!

Hi,

I will put something together and post it hear in the next few weeks. I'll need to summarize the data in a way that isn't 78 pages (which was the size of my completed thesis on this topic). Thanks again for your interest.

And sometimes I wish people could know how much of an advocate I am for non-biased, non-moralistic information about drug use and drug consumers. Most of my training before grad school was in old school addictions treatment (think 28 days) and I fought the system for years trying to make changes. Then decided to leave my career to pursue a PhD so that I could fight the fight from a different angle (research and policy). It doesn't hurt to have a few initials behind your name when doing it....lol

Hi,

I totally understand your skepticism. And although there's no way that I could convince you without simply getting to know you better, I hope that you can give me the benefit of the doubt. Obviously the people at several highly reputable organizations (erowid and MAPS, among others) have at least signed off on my project in terms of advertising it on their respective websites. I had to go through several stages of question/answer and providing documentation (including motivations for the study) before they agreed to help promote it.

It's okay to doubt the intentions of the scientific community based on being lied to in the past. But know that there are those of us who are young scientists, who want to make reparations. It may not be that we will always agree, but I believe in my heart that there exists a path for science and the drug using community if we can break down the barriers and build trust.

All the best,
Alan
