Ecstasy Study Botched, Retracted

God damn! What a fucked up researcher. First off, after one trial, he claimed MDMA was damaging. This is fucked up, because anywhere else in the research community, subsequent trials are done by other researches to verify the results. This is one big fucking blunder. And it took him a year to figure it out?! A YEAR?! This fucking pisses me off, I can't believe that such a research report would be disseminated without anything to back it up...

No <3 for those bastards.

Well first off, he did perform another experiment to back up his research. This is when he found his error. MDMA was thought by so many to be dangerous and life threatening, that this 'proof' was such big news, and the story was published. People want to be in the know, and as quickly as possible. This 'evidence' should have been kept unpublished until the second trial was completed. And as for Ricaurte waiting a year for the second trial results, I think he waited for the monkey to die, then analyzed its brain.

I also thought along the same lines as easy e's first post. I hope this headline gets attention.

Yesterday, Ricaurte was attempting to put a brave face on the calamity. He is under attack from all sides, and has already been accused of rushing his study into print because Congress was looking at a bill known as the Anti-Rave Act, which would punish club owners who knew that drugs such as ecstasy were being used on their premises.

Ricaurte has denied political bias. He said yesterday that his laboratory made 'a simple human error', adding: 'We're scientists, not chemists.' Asked why the vials of liquid were not checked before being used on the animals, he replied: 'We're not chemists. We get hundreds of chemicals here - it's not customary to check them.'

This study was bullshit to begin with.

THIS IS HOW THEY INJECTED THE MDMA (actually methamphetamine):

it was delivered in 3 100mg INJECTIONS (VERY big dose)

every 3 HOURS (very long intervals)

and, if I remember correctly most the the primates in this study also died.

I'm against animal research for drugs, shit we're animals too - celebrities and politicians overdose all the time, just analyze there brains.

^ if u ask me, they murdered monkies just to make stuff up so that mdma looks bad

Considering that Ricaurte had demonstrated years before that twice-daily doses of 5 mg/kg of MDMA didn't harm the dopamine systems of monkeys, I would say he already had evidence that his results of 'severe damage' from three 2 mg/kg doses was suspect. I don't know if he switched the drugs on purpose, but at the very least he has been rather dishonest and irresponsible in how the findings were reported.

And as for Ricaurte waiting a year for the second trial results, I think he waited for the monkey to die, then analyzed its brain.

All animals were killed several weeks after being dosed; there was no waiting period on this particular study (there was on several others.)

mislabeled my ass......

My sentiments entirely.
And did you see his excuse, as pointed out by Tranquilo,

"We're scientists not chemists".

I haven't stopped laughing since yesterday....

yeah... and the best thing is that he apointed that mistake only whem a lot of investigations results has make really evident that is research was fraudulent..

He went back and inspected the bottle that originally accompanied the supposed MDMA and found that it was not methamphetamine but MDMA. The supposed bottle of MDMA was already empty, but some frozen monkey brains left over from the study remained. Inspection of them showed evidence of methamphetamine, but no ecstasy.

Hmm...if the MDMA wasn't used here, I wonder where it ran off to. If they tried using it in some methamphetamine study, I'm sure their results there were just as flawed. Christ!

Hell yeah. And if you ask me Ricaurte is a monkey murderer and should have his coffee cut with strychnine.

also, thedea.org- only 3 monkeys died after the experiment

also, thedea.org- only 3 monkeys died after the experiment

Two animals (one monkey and one baboon) died from drug toxicity. All surviving animals were euthanized several weeks after being dosed. (An overdose of sedative was probably used; small animals like rats are often simply decapitated.)

I'm getting a kick out of it just thinking at how hard his colleagues are laughing at him right now. What a stupid, stupid piece of shit. To think many of my friends didn't try ecstasy because of this very study.

The researcher wouldn't have just randomly waited a year to do the second study, and wouldn't have waited for the monkey to die, (as preposed in a previous post). However, it does take a long time to get the ball rolling on any study, what with funding, and time constraints and having to arrange approval from a research review committee, etc. That is probably what made the year difference.

This has probably caused some serious damage to his career, but I do think it is somewhat good that he did attempt to replicate the study to begin with, in reply to the original concerns. Many researchers would have just left that up to some other group. The findings though, do not mean that ecstasy is SAFE to take, or that all the other findings that have shown some sort of damage are incorrect just because of this one lab.

I have decided to make a study on the effects of alcohol on the human brain.

I'll use 97% rubbing alcohol, to get as good a study as this particular clown.

not to mention they fucking put the amount of shit into the monkeys..... lots in a short time.....
