A 17-year-old girl has died after taking the drug ecstasy at a sleepover in Abbotsford, B.C., on Monday.

Cheryl McCormack was with three other teen girls when she began having a bad reaction to the street drug and became unresponsive, said Const. Ian MacDonald.

McCormack was taken to hospital where she remained in critical condition until she died Thursday.

The other girls at the party did not have an adverse reaction but were treated in hospital as a precaution, MacDonald said.

MacDonald said they have learned Cheryl McCormack and her friends took the ecstasy as a weight-loss or weight-control drug.

"They were using it for the explicit purpose of trying to either lose weight or maintain goal weight," said Const. Ian MacDonald.

My condolences to her family - no parent(s) should have to bury their own son(s) and/or daughter(s).

However, I somewhat disagree with Stacy Wilson's opinion of the drug. Yes, ecstasy can be dangerous to take because, unless you have a testing kit, you don't really know what you're ingesting - it's like playing Russian Roulette.

I feel (after years of use) that the actual pure drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is quite safe as it was also used extensively in the field of psychiatry to help patents with various issues such as marital problems, anxiety due to terminal cancer and PTSD up until it was banned in 1985 - I understand that just because it was used previously by - for example - Dr. Shulgin doesn't mean it's safe - then again, try giving a cancer patient some blow or meth and see how that works out. It has helped me to improve relationships with family and friends as well as develop new, healthy and long lasting ones with others.

Unfortunately, the majority of ecstasy tablets nowadays contain either little to no actual MDMA and instead are laced with potentially dangerous substitues - such as Benzylpiperazine (BZP), 3-Trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP), 4-methylmethcathinone (Mephedrone), Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), 4-methoxyamphetamine (PMA), Methamphetamine (Meth) - which may mimick the effects of real/pure ecstasy but may also cause potentially serious and sometimes fatal adverse/side effects - which leads me to my next hypothesis:

I believe that the victim ingested an adulterated pill as deaths due solely to ingestion of actual ecstasy - or MDMA - are extremely rare, whereas, deaths from adulterated pills have been on the rise especially in the past 5 years. This is due to the fact that the precursor chemicals used to synthesize MDMA are very tightly controlled - in contrast to precursor chemicals used to synthesize all of the aforementioned adulterants. Combine that with greedy drug dealers - whom I feel should either be locked up for life or sentenced to death - looking to make money however they can even though they know they are selling bunk (I'm not saying all dealers know the ingredients of their ecstasy tabs, but I'm talking about the ones who do and don't give a shit). It is a sickening practice and these people who manufacture these dirty/bunk pills are among the lowest scum of our race (they have no morals, or remorse for human life) and deserve to be treated like animals.

^ derp. EVERY death that they say is caused by "ecstasy" is an adulterated drug. I mean sure some people have died from MDMA, but you can probably count the number on one hand,\.

and who the fuck takes E as a weight loss drug? Thats probably why she died. Bitch probably went anorexic and was popping pills to deal with the hunger pains

I call bullshit. Why would anybody take MDMA as a weight-loss dug? Surely straight amphetamine would work just as well, if not better, be cheaper, easier to come by, and be less dangerous? They were taking the drugs to have fun, like everybody else who takes them.

As folley said, the very low chance their pills actually contained MDMA combined with the even lower chance that the girl was actually allergic (or whatever) to that drug makes it extremely unlikely she died because of "ecstasy." She died because drug laws prevent people from purchasing what they think they're purchasing. If you have to blame somebody, first blame the government, and then blame the drug manufacturers.

It's a shame so many people have to die before people realize there's a problem with the system.

No it's hard as shit to find good stuff where I live. For me atleast I would say majority around me contains very little MDMA

Taking "ecstasy" - an unknown cocktail of drugs that have little or no research behind them - as a weight loss drug is incredibly ignorant. Not only is it risky to take unknown chemicals, but to take them for a purpose different than "intended" (As much as recreational chemicals with little or no research have an "intended" purpose) is as ridiculous as it gets. I do not blame the girl entirely, because the drug war is the ultimate cause of the lack of solid scientific information on drugs.
If MDMA were legal, people would not need to take random chemicals in search of the MDMA experience.
They would also know more about dosage and safety, including "intended" uses.
Yet another death that lies in the hands of Nixon, and the FDA, and now Obama.

MDMA is a strong anorectic and makes your body burn more calories... it may not be the very best weight-loss drug out there, but it could certainly be used as one effectively.

More trouble with Canadian pills:

B.C. woman in critical condition after ecstasy overdose

A 24-year-old woman is in hospital in critical condition after overdosing on ecstasy at a New Year's Eve party in Abbotsford, B.C.

Police say the woman, whose name has not been released, took ecstasy with three friends at a party in the 33700 block of George Ferguson Way but later passed out.

The woman was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment. She remains in hospital in critical condition.

Her friends have been forthcoming with police and have indicated they all ingested ecstasy but believe they took a smaller amount than the victim.

This is the second ecstasy overdose in Abbotsford in recent weeks.

^yeah ecstacy on the east coast of Canada is terrible unless it is imported from the west coast (wonder who brings all that MDMA in over there), i've had BZP pills and shit, saw it all going around, pills with 5-meo-dalt, you really never know what you're getting here. Even 'pure molly' is suspicious.

it's difficult for the masses to understand that there is a difference between 'e' and mdma.

could this girl have gotten a bad pill? yes. was she being ignorant? yes. will it happen again? yes. It's not really her fault the education system does not teach kids anything about dealing with cuts in 'e' lol. maybe her parents failed her too. Either way, get the shitty pills off the streets you greedy dealers.

as well pure mdma would probably work relatively well and safe for weight loss at a lower dose lol. It's less neurotoxic than methamphetamine which works quite well at exactly this.

Is it that MDMA is never lethal or extremely rarely lethal? :P I don't see why it would present less danger of acute toxicity than other stimulants (indeed, it tends to be more hyperthermic). It's just that people will binge on it less often and to a lesser extent.

ebola

I live in Vancouver for a good chunk of the year, and from personal experience I'll state that the pressed pills here have terrible reputations for causing weird reactions: keeping people awake for days, and the like. However, the MDMA powder can be very high quality (and inexpensive), and is usually cut with methamphetamine or caffeine, if anything. I don't know of anyone who has had a traumatic or dangerous experience from powder, but I know people who took a few presses, had a bad time and felt "off" for 48+ hours.

Pretty much man, I mean you can only really roll for so long, and the doses needed to kill you are like 5000mgs

MDMA has obviously killed a lot more than that, but I mean compared to all the adulterants like PMA and pipes and God knows what else these days... its nothing

I was gonna say, who takes e for the sole purpose of weight loss? The girl probably ate some pma or pmma which seems to be knocking off people left and right. What's sad is if it were pma/pmma then at its creation had the chemist used sassafrass oil like he was supposed to this girl would have had an amazing roll and one helluva night. Instead he decided to go cheap and now who knows how many people will suffer or die due to this greed.
