I don't really think large-scale events of this kind are a good idea, way too much that can go wrong with incompatible people, people who aren't "stable" while under the influence of MDMA and a whole host of other things.
I have however been at parties involving a smaller number of people (less than ten) where everyone was comfortable with each other (and knew each other well) and did MDMA or Mephedrone, those worked rather well. But as I said, on a larger scale I don't think it would work.
I'm also opposed to the idea of charging. If you organize something for your friends it would make sense that everyone pitches in to cover the costs equally but charging definitely would make things a bit weird (there's a difference between buying E, cider, beer and maybe some food, lube and condoms for everyone to use and splitting the costs of this and trying to charge everyone for entrance, it may be subtle but there is a difference).

there is an insane story that circulates among my friends, that starts with four of them (two guys and two girls) planning an ecstasy-and-coke night at one of the girls' apartment. one of the guys' roommates is intrigued by the coke part, and asks to come along, but brings a giant bag of mushrooms for himself.
so, they blow back a bunch of lines and drop their ecstasy and the four are all in the shower, naked, pouring champagne on each other. the fifth guy, having eaten a ton of the shrooms and done a lot of yayo, is sitting on the toilet in the same bathroom, fully clothed, staring intently at the wall and talking about how he's seeing patterns and whatnot. the others keep telling him to take the ecstasy, how much fun it'll be, etc. they go back to their shower antics and are getting ready to dry off and have group sex when guy #5 comes back into the bathroom all wide-eyed.

he then makes all the others put clothes on and go into the living room. they're sitting there wondering what's going on when the dude springs into the room, completely naked except for socks, jumps on a table and starts jacking off his limp dick furiously. the others stare in disgusted wonder as the dude aggressively starts pointing at the ceiling fan with his other hand, and goes off on this insane gibberish rant about how he owns "all the helicopters in the universe," how "you are a computer and you're a computer and I'm a computer and we're. all. computers," and the like. the theory is that the ecstasy made him naked, the coke made him yell and point, and the mushrooms made what he was yelling about completely insane. he did this for more than an hour straight before the others started leaving.

why make it a big party?
my partner and i love having sex with other people on e. were extremely laid back hedonistic types tho, it turns me on watching her get fucked, and she likes seeing me do the same. she has as voracious an appetite for women as i do. we vibe pretty perfectly when were exploring other people, have the same exact tastes in women, the men she is into are rarely people i dont approve of, and vice versa.
but yeah, the dynamic of us approving of both of the other's sex partner choices, both of our other sex partner's approval of us, is a complex dynamic enough. adding 1 or 2 other people to the mix is even harder, i cant really see how easily it would work with more than that, though i simply lack the experience.
adding an additional women seems to be very easy tho. women are just so much more empathetic and understanding.

I wonder if E would work very well at a sex party. My feeling is that many of the guys would be incapable of getting an erection.
What you might get instead is a giant massage fest.
You would need to make sure that people don't take too much and get completely floored.
Music, lots of cushions, lube, sex toys, slings and several active hosts and hostesses to make sure that everybody feels included.

read what i said above - you have to make the sex #1 and the ecstasy priority #2. its just like drinking - there is a fine line between just getting blasted for the sake of it, and remaining socially oriented and composed. know your limits with mdma with respect to this, and timing is everything. dont pop a pill and dive into a fleshpile. pop a pill, and talk and relax for a few hours. let the situation manifest itself, and a man can function just fine.

I think its a cool idea. I've done something similar, albeit with cocaine and methamphetamine instead, but same idea, getting high and sexing it up. I invited some swinger/poly people I know and asked them to invite a guest or two that they know who is into the same thing, as to make sure my guests where into the idea with minimal drama.
sexing it up was the main objective, but not 'obligatory' if people wanted to just chill, watch/hang out and blow lines, that was cool.
total was about 12 people with an fairly even mix of male/female. It went all night, I had stal to give out but most people brought their own coke. (fuckin $$ to serve up blow ya know!) I also made sure there was an adequate supply of condoms...
Yeah, I'd def suggest you have some condoms and basic hygiene stuff available (perhaps even have a stack of towels and keep the shower open... you can get pretty ripe from all the sweating from mdma)
I'd also suggest some coke or speed... they are a bit easier to have sex on, emotionally, physically, cause they don't cause AS BAD of sexual dysfunction, and their clear up your head a bit so you don't get distracted as easy.
