Early morning wakefulness, "Insomnia".

Well if don't take ambien I'll stay awake untill 4:00 in the morning and then I'll wake up at 6:00 in the morning. So, I would only get two hours of sleep a night.
Sleep hygiene could possibly help that a lot, but ne'mind. :) Try the Lunesta. It's as easy to get prescribed as Ambien and kept me asleep all night.
It did make me short tempered in the morning for an hour or two, but that was me. I just learned to not speak if something irritated me first thing next morning.

I would try lifestyle modification before trying to get onto new drugs. By the time 4am rolls around most of the caffeine has finally worn off

Oh, I've got a benzo's too. So I don't think it's a good idea to take another benzo to go with it instead. I just counted how many meds I have. I have a total of 14 prescriptions.

Is Zolpiclone an option then maybe if it has to be a z med non benzo?
Lunesta is Eszopiclone, the S-stereoisomer of zopiclone. I'd imagine they are pretty similar.

I'm not trying to be snarky or argumentative, guy. But Ambien is known for waking up after a few hours. Scan down this quick Google search.
Going on Lunesta would be a switch, not an addition. I did recommend he try the sleep hygiene and not take a Z drug at all, but he's not ready for that. He should do the sleep hygiene as well.

I agree with everything you said being a good idea and the best solution.
