@ Bearlove, any tips on how to make a nutrituous budget recipe i have taste nicer ? Its an onion and tuna and tinned chopped tomatoes with tomato pure and garlic pasta, with optional fresh basil leaves. The basil leaves not only make the meal look much more appetising and colourful but it makes it quite a lot nicer to eat too.

Yeah I can cook on a budjet - I made a three course meal for two that will last two days for us - if your eating alone it could last a week (even without a freezer) (for a 10£). In all honesty the tubes of garlic etc are really expensive and should be avoided. You can buy 10x the amount of fresh + a garlic press for half the price of a garlic paste tube (per serving).

If your using a tomato paste or puree - fry it on a high heat, stir it until it changes color and starts to give a nice smell (It changes) add a big pinch of sugar, some salt and you have doubled the volume :D. (for nothing).

If your really hard up (I have been there) buy some budget pasta - mix that with your reduced tomato sauce and add that with a can of tuna = pence per meal. If you have a freezer make a months worth in a sitting (get some freezer bags - failing that, get some cling film - line a pan with cling film, pour your meals worth into pan and freeze it.

If you have a budget meal - (remember why they are cheap remember how the producer made them cheap (msg / salt etc) - go for something not as cheap but something you can tweak at home (and make last for two days). A chil

Cheers for the tips. I do use fresh garlic, i love the stuff, especially with pasta. Were you gonna finish off by saying chilli con carne, yeah thats another staple. I think the idea of cooking bigger batches and then freezing parts of it is something i should be doing more of, both for convenience and economy. Im suddenly feeling hungry now, gonna be tuna sweetcorn garlic pasta with mayo. Grated cheese would have been nice but i cba now to go and get some. I nearly allways make the mistake of not planning ahead for my meals, so that i dont think about food until im hungry, by which time i cba with anything that takes time to prepare, it has to be more or less immediate.

sorry, yes though con carne :D. You can make a huge pan of that really cheaply (I rarely add meat to it as I make a big pan of it which lasts a few days) not for economical reasons I just like it after a few days. You can always add Fajita seasoning to it (I make my own), serve with cheese/sour cream and chopped lettuce and its now a different meal. Stick some mash potato on top, bake it, grate some cheese on top of that and its another meal again :D. (if you grate the cheese into serving sizes and freeze it, it will last you months. It also goes with all carbs (pasta, rice, couscous, baked potato, chips, toast etc).

Meals that you can make in bulk / freeze are the cheapest way to go - curry, chili con carne, soups, etc.

If you can be bothered to plan ahead buy the dried pulses / beans / lentils etc / soak them overnight and you can have a really nice meal for pence per serving. White beans /lentils (soaked overnight) couple tins of tomatoes (smash them up and add water reduce until it starts to thicken), chili, cumin, oregano, garlic, salt n pepper, sugar, onions. (You don't need to soak overnight, you can boil for a few hours but that's just extra cost)
 
Do you shop at Sainsbury's by any chance knock?

OK I'll stop promoting particular supermarkets if it makes you happy :D

For closure on the issue, I shop most frequently at Tesco, because the nearest supermarket with a large range is a Tesco. For immediately needed basics, I go to the five-minutes-away Asda. For a decent morning roll or a bottle of Barr's soft drink, I go to the local Co-Op. I really don't like Tesco much, so when I'm passing a Sainsbury's, which are not all that close, I drop in for a bit of a treat! When I'm really bored of the standard fare I'll make a special visit to M&S or Waitrose, but that really is once in a blue moon!

Cheers for all this, i really need to start taking more care of my diet. Recenty hunger has just become a fucking annoyance that requires patience and time to satisfy properly. Hence all the instant microwave ready meals etc.
 
last i remember microwave ready meals are rather expensove and not too healthy :-) get acookin mdb!

had chicken and peas in tomato sauce last night. then pigged out on pink sparkling wine. asleep before 9. hardcore

Kingme, microwave meals can be expensive and can be unhealthy but it's not a rule.

There is nothing specifically unhealthy about microwave cooking, in fact microwaving is healthier than boiling vegetables, nutrients leach out into the water and you don't get to eat them. Steaming veg is probably the healthiest way to cook them.

Some ready meals have too much salt and stuff, but not all of them, and I know some people who put far too much salt on everything anyway.

I think if you eat with other people, like two or three people having the same meal, it is always best to cook from scratch, but if I buy a lettuce, for example, I often end up throwing half of it away, because I live and eat (usually) alone. I don't want to live and eat alone but I do, and ready meals make my life a lot easier because I'd have so much more to worry about, more washing of kitchen utensils... sometimes it's just really impractical to cook everything from scratch.

And like I say, many ready meals are not all that bad for you, you need to pay attention to ingredients.

I don't always eat ready meals before you get that idea, but I do many times because I really have other things that I need to spend my time on. I make my own pizzas from scratch from time to time and they are great, tastier than any alternative IMO and super healthy, but it takes a fair old while to prepare the dough and do all the washing. I was thinking about doing some more last night, but I just haven't got time at the moment.
 
yeah you can also buy perefectly pleasant cheese and tomoto piza bases for 99p, and then pile fresh vegetables on top before chucking it in the oven; garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, peppers. I wasnt sure if that was healthy or not but ive been assured it is, so Ill keep doing that. It only takes 5 minutes or so to prepare so its not too much hassle.

Tonight i was fuckin starving as all ive eaten over the last couple of days was 2 bowls of porridge and a couple of salmon sandwiches. I had a spag bol ready meal, i knew it wouldnt satisfy my calorie requirements so i made some garlic couscous to pad it out. It mixed really nicely, but i made far too much cous cous id forgotten how much that stuff expands when it soaks. I reckon couscous could healthily bulk out practically any ready meal, they are generally not filling enough for a mans calorie requirements.
 
Knock - wrap your lettuce in a few sheets of kitchen paper. I will last a week longer ! Failing that, use it instead of rice when having something like a curry (even better if you add a grated carrot) or add to something like noodles.

Ready meals are fine (not something I ever buy) but when you consider the cost per portion size they are pretty expensive.

Thanks Bearlove I will try the kitchen paper trick :) But that was just an example, it applies to all kinds of things, like celery, bell peppers, any large vegetable.

I've got my bread sorted, I freeze bread, rolls and bagels, and take out what I need the night before.

And dish washing is still a biggie. If there are two or more of you then you can produce enough dishes to warrant running the dishwasher every night, but it seems overkill for one.

Anyway I did buy a whole lettuce the other day and I made a big salad which is in a box in the fridge. It's not all bad :)
 
i never understood the big deal with washing dishes.

it seems like such a chore for some, but i personally love it. its quite satisfying when you take a pile of dirty ones and a few minutes later they re all clean sparkly and white.
had a roommate once that prefered to bu the ingredients and cook anything i wanted if i agreed to do the dishes. crazy but who am i to argue with such a good deal?
 
Yeah I didn't used to mind doing the dishes., I used to think it was therapeutic. But after 22 years it really does get a bit boring!

I find the only way I can face them nowadays is to take drugs and listen to podcasts. But I don't know enough decent podcasts for all my dishes :|
 
i think the trick is never letting the dishes pile up too high.
i usually wash whatever i use when i use it, and whatever happenes to be in the sink when i do it (leftovers from other housemates).

and you re right, it is therapeutic.

have you tried listening to tv while doing them? i listen to the news or something
