According to Jude Satan demands respect. Even the Archangel Michael wouldn't slander him.. so if you find yourself ever in his presence ( perish the thought) dont call him a dick.

NSFW:
1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,

To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for[a] Jesus Christ:

2 Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.
The Sin and Doom of Ungodly People

3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord[c] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

8 In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings. 9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”[d] 10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them.

11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.

12 These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

14 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15 to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”[e] 16 These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere

17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.[f]
Doxology

24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

If I ever were to meet either a devil or a deity in person I'd gladly call 'em a dick to their face. Less so a devil if only cos I'm not really aware of one causing any real grief over the years. Not even close to the levels of grief gods have caused anyway :\

Or, more accurately, not even close to the kinda grief human beings who actually believe in devils and gods have caused their fellow creatures in the name of their idols. If any such idols really existed they have no excuse for allowing it - by doing so they would simply be condoning it. Hence being well within my rights to call either or both a dick and be totally justified.

Must admit I'm not expecting such a meeting to ever happen but if it by some miracle (:D) ever did then I would.

Also, weren't James and Jude supposed to be Jesus' brothers or are they different James and Judes? I know a James definitely was a named siblng but can't recall if a Jude was. Thought so though.

Satan actually doesn't get a bad rep in the Bible. It's just a position - a job title - rather than the evil thing that it morphed into. There's actually very little on the topic of "The Satan" in there. It's "The Devil" that's the supposed baddy. Is never actually spelled out that they're one and the same afaik. Seems unlikely they were ever meant to be really. Not in early drafts anyway. They kinda got conflated over the years... like the "opposition" did really. More coupla compilation characters than anything else really. Made it easier to work with I suppose. Keep it simple, Stupid and all that.

Jesus said in Mark:

The Greatest Commandment

28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.e 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’f 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Spirit comes first then its all love. Love yourself, love your neighbor . Theres no talk of defending idols or going to war over them. In fact all through the OT idols are spoken of as meaningless... just lumps of wood including the Asherah poles you mentioned earlier.

I'm interested in Asherah... I hope this thread lasts dont you :) .. I need to go to bed i'm up earliy in the morning and its the middle of the bleeding night.

night all xx

If God is the universe, then he is omnipresent. If you see the universe as an information storage system, then he is omniscient. If everything that is possible occurs within the universe, then he is omnipotent.

I'm no Christian but I'm OK with a sort of pantheism. I don't see God as a seperate entity. I don't really have much time for the idea of God at all but I can see a certain miraculousness in everything around us, and in us. That's about the extent of my "religion".

The Asherah poles weren't meaningless, Jess. Asherah was Mrs God (or at least Mrs One of His Component Deities) until he went all monotheistic on her and kicked her to the kerb :(

Also, on the Jesus & OT Law stuff, depends on which verses you choose to emphasis really (surprise surprise 8))

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17)

“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:18-19

“It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.” (Luke 16:17)

"Matthew" and "Luke" seem to think Jesus was kinda hardline on keeping OT law... You takes yer gospel and ya makes yer choice. As ever.

And a brief aside on the "no idols" commandment, isn't the very next thing they do making a box (or ark if you prefer) for the commandments to reside in... complete with idols on top 8)

I also hope the thread doesn't need closing. Is a fine topic. Nighty, Jess <3

Ha! And all the rest of 'em. Aside from the "Worship ME worms!!!" ones. They ain't for fukkin with if you don't want smiting upside the head 8o

Knock: Pantheism is all well and good... but a bit pointless and frankly a bit wet too. Ya pussy - pick a real god :p;):D

Actually, you'd be in good company there. Most right-headed folk plumped for pantheism (or Deism which is fairly similar only even less demanding) until atheism became acceptable to admit to without being ostracised or executed or owt.

^ =D

My fave Biblical quote for this minute (for there are so very many corkers in there :D)...

"Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies" --1 Tim.1:4

How self-refuting is that? My boy Timmy just told us all to ignore the Bible so who are we to argue? =D

Although I suspect Jess may think...

"Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. " --1 Tim.1:7

... more apt in my case ;)

Ack. New Agers. Find 'em possibly even more infuriating than other religious types. At least with the bog-standard religions there's some kinda anchor for their belief system you can have a sensible discussion over (depending on how rabidly insane the believer happens to be). New Agers really do seem to just make it up as they go along and still manage to be at least as smug and holier-than-thou as traditional religees :|

Oh ffs. Why do my posts in EADD always turn into a theology megathreads. I mean ALWAYS.

...Big post on it's way when I've got a little more time.

The one question I always wonder about when speaking with religious types is "Why?". I just cannot even begin to comprehend the kinda mind that could even begin to entertain such bleedin' ridiculous notions. Truly baffling. Anyone of y'all religees up to mustering an answer to that question that doesn't resort to "if you just prayed and had faith you'd know" kinda stuff (cos I find it a nonsensical notion to pretend to believe something I don't believe in in order to believe in it... if you see what I mean).

Other questions...

Why does it not all seem... well... frankly just plain silly to you? Why did you pick the one religion you did out of them all? Why the specific version of the one you picked and not a different version? Have you ever looked seriously into others? Why are they wrong? How is yours different? Can you honestly say that if you lived in a predominantly Muslim, or Hindu, or Buddhist (any religion other than your own) country you wouldn't believe that one instead? What is the difference between currently accepted religious texts and older ones that are now only seen as mythology? Will your religion somehow not end up in the same boat? Why?

I have plenty more but sure that's plenty to start off with ;)

Back on topic. Fine questions.

Tennis bumgal <3

Questions have been slightly rejigged and reformatted for clarity. And they are genuine questions I really do wonder about. Not being a dick even if I may sound a bit dickish when discussing this topic. Genuinely does fascinate and baffle me.

You know, I had that on my wall (my sister actually bought it for me). And for 20 years I've felt guilty as fuck for the sexist piggery I was involved in. Googling it now, that's the first time I've seen it for, actually, 30 years. And the guilt washed away.

Because she has a fine arse.
