Who the fuck is Emma and when did she get to be in charge of my mouth? :p

Americans pronounce plenty chemical names rather differently to those of us wot speak proper. No idea if 'amine' is amongst 'em but given I opted blindly for the 'ay-meen' route I've decided it must be :D

What is the R? Why is it R?
Fucknose. Possibly from something German, as a lot of chemical jargon is, but the truth is I don't know, and with these kind of things, not only do most people not know, but when you look into it it seems that no-one actually knows for sure.

I'd go with Shambles, "ay-meen", and "Fen-I'll-alk-I'll-lay-mean".

MDB, I've gor a GSCE in "Double Award Science" (you get two GCSEs for the three sciences) and I did about a year of uni's worth of Open University courses (I don't know whether or not one would consider OU study "self-teaching", though I did, and I like the related word "autodidactic").

I've always been bothered by the 'ay' pronunciation of the letter 'a'. English is unique in using this letter for an 'ay' sound. The closest I know outside English is the german ä but I'm sure they have good reasons for what they do, whereas I'm sure we British do not.

"autodidactic"

Hehe. Always liked that word. Taught it myself, dontcha know :)

(not just saying that cos you agree with my (clearly correct) pronunciation either - honest)

Another word I'm rather fond of is 'autocannibalism" which comes from a Stephen King short story. Suppose it's not so much the word as the concept really. You'd probably need to read the story to get the context.

Ay-meen is indeed the pronunciation for those on the good side of the Atlantic :P

R is an abbreviation from the German "radical" IIRC. It's misleading though because it radical in English means something else.

In this, R is used to denoted any non-hydrogen substiutuent - typically an organic moiety.

Away to fuck.

What does R mean? You can't just say R is used to denote blah blah blah, why fucking R?

Why fucking ay?

edit: oh wait if only I had read transform's post =D

Why fucking ay?
