Got the job and on a very acceptable salary even more so considering I am living at home. I now come equipped with some semi large bug business balls. Yey!

so to defend myself (and the entire western oil industry ;)) against duck_raper's statement, i've actually found out a bit more on this subject, and it's as i suspected. while i know damn well it's not done for altruistic reasons, the facts are: the western companies are going in there to provide the much-needed technical know-how and experience required for the construction, engineering and logistics projects to help get these countries' oil industries off the ground. my own projects will involve visiting each onshore base and rig (onshore & offshore) and basically teaching them how to run their logistics & materials operations, and then leaving the 'natives' to it. the people working there are, in the majority, local.

and the decision to export oil is up to the country in question. the profits don't all get funnelled into the west; they would mostly go to the country's treasury. what the country does with that is up to them. i don't think the three countries i'm going to first have the worst record in that respect, but i'll do some more reading. (not that it'll put me off going, i've got fucking bills to pay here. :p)

Oh come on Felix! How naive are you?

And if you *really* believe in western primary industry companies going into poorer nations for their own good, always giving a fair price without any form of bribe/corruption to government and acting like the hand-holding big smiley people we know they are, you should have a look up of the exploitation of South American oil fields and mining deposits by the West. Or, perhaps, the deal the Iraqi's currently get for their oil when compared to pre-second war.

It's a job, not your life. You don't have to defend it to anyone. It's not your responsibility to defend your employers. And coming out with the "it's all for the people, maaaan" bullshit doesn't do you any favours.

calm down.

so to defend myself (and the entire western oil industry ;) ) <- note the wink. i said that as a bit of a joke, dear.

and i said: while i know damn well it's not done for altruistic reasons

i'm certainly not naive about the situation, if anything i'm more cynical than most. but i stand by everything i said above. i'm not going to south africa or south america or iraq.

anyway...

i've accepted their offer about 10 minutes ago. i'll have a medical this week and i might start as soon as next wednesday.
