woah. a recruiter has just phoned to see if i would be interested in a job. it would be working six weeks on and two weeks off, based in germany, libya, gabon, and angola, both onshore and offshore. the job itself sounds ideal for my background.

he sounded pretty keen on me (no not that way ;)) but they want someone to start almost immediately. i have a job interview tomorrow (for that job i've been banging on about for ages, which i really want) and then i go offshore for 3 weeks on friday.

this has really thrown a spanner in the works. insane money with all food & accomodation & expenses paid, but i'm not sure if i'm cut out to work away from home for so long. :\

i should go and see them, definitely. but if it all went well, should i work the 3 weeker offshore? it's pretty late to back out of that now, i would feel like a right arse. fuck.

Sounds like an amazing opportunity, if after seeing them about it you think it's something you really want to do it'd be worthwhile backing out of the other work in the long run.

yep, i'm sure you're right. :)

it does sound pretty amazing, but i can't help thinking about the realities of working in those places. i've only worked abroad in nice little sheltered places like norway and the US. i believe angola is not as bad as it used to be, but it's still not a very nice place.:\

It's true the list didn't look like the most glamourous places...
I think I'm just obsessed with travel so new places would always draw me to a job even if they weren't the nicest places.

Those planning a visit to the country or moving to live or work in Libya must be aware that the nation takes its Islamic values very seriously and visitors to the country must respect Libya and the Libyan people’s beliefs. Alcohol and drugs are banned – no exceptions (although a number of expatriates use oranges to make their own wine and malt and hops to make their own beer). Women should dress conservatively although they are not expected to wear headscarves, and no one should travel to Libya if they are unaware of the traditions, rules, regulations and laws that they must abide by because they will either cause offence or end up being ostracized if their behaviour offends.
oh fuck.

How long would you spend in each country?

And think of it this way, you get the job you've been trying to for ages.. you enjoy it etc, 5 years down the line you meet a new work mate who's just been doing the job you had. Telling you all these amazing stories of all these different cultures and stuff.. then you think, why didn't I do that?

If I passed that up, I'd definetly regret it in my old age

aye, good point. i'm such a fucking scaredy cat. 8)

no idea. it's project work, so i'm guessing it would mean staying at one location until that job's done, then moving on to the next one.

Try and find a minimum and maximum time, so you're not just shipped to Libya for 2 years before spending just 6 weeks in Germany

How long has it taken for this job to start? Ages, so how the fuck in all reality can they expect you not to be looking for anything else meanwhile? If something does come up, fuck them right off without a second thought.

Interview tomorrow for the permanent offshore job, then find out more about the abroad job straight afterwards & go offshore on Firday to do the 2 or 3 weeks for some candy. You can always come home early if required by telling them that some obscure relative, twice removed has just pegged it. The majority of slack bastards on my project have done it to get home early. :\

does any1 know anything about getting an apprenticeship as an electrician when ur a bit older???
its something i wish id done when i was 16, im 23 now & iv been fucking about for too long working shite jobs with no prospects n staying in shite flats, im thinking its maybe time to sacrifice a couple years for the sake of the rest of my life, im gonna lose the plot if i go on like this for much longer.
at the moment iv been unemployed for 2 months and i cant face the thought of taking another shitty short term job.

i have reasonable standard grades and a higher in computing, fuck all else tho, apart from a couple of unfinished college courses

any advice or even other suggestions would b welcome. i live in the east kilbride/hamilton area of scotland.

another problem is i cant drive :( (due to being a lazy cunt when i was young)

Since you're in Scotland you'll need to sit the ECITB test. Well, you don't HAVE to but nearly everybody does so not doing it will count against you.

I sat it about 3 months ago. You phone them up and they book you in for the next time they have and you go along to a local college to sit it when they've got enough people.

When you pass that you write a letter to every single electrician in the city telling them you've passed the ECITB test and want an apprenticeship. 95% of them will ignore you %)

It isn't easy to get into (despite what the Government say about getting folk into industry). All the jobs are given to relatives.

But give it a shot.

Not sure about your age. They aren't supposed to refuse you because of your age but they probably will because they can pay a 16 year old school leaver pennies to work for them whereas you will have a higher minimum wage (and probably won't be us much of a push-over).

Also remember that an Apprenticeship is 4 years (3 if you're lucky) so you won't be on a decent wage until you're 27 - dunno if that would bother you.

Personally, I'd look at doing an apprenticeship with some sort of Engineering company. Loads of them run programmes like that (BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, Scottish Gas, ScotRail, Scottish Power etc etc). At least with them you're on a better wage and slightly better working conditions. Mind you, they'll all be closed for this year. Start applying in Ocotber so you're first in the door for next year.

Prospects are looking good for this job, final interview next week! Pay is rubbish but opportunities for advancement are plentiful.

Apparently they were very impressed with my enthusiasm on the phone interview. Which isn't surprising as I was thoroughly half-cut at the time =D

Let's just hope I can replicate that enthusiasm in person and without a load of booze in me! :p

^ LOL. :D

i had my first interview for the offshore job today, and i think i played a blinder. better money than i expected as well as a pension and medical insurance & travelling expenses.

they're even paying me mileage for going through to the interview, hehe.

unfortunately they're seeing another couple of people next week so it'll drag on for even fucking longer. :X

I so need a new job, but it's the exact opposite time in the market to be looking for work in the legal work for mortgages.. Fuck, at least one time a week I'm going to lose my job now. Not that I like my job, but I'd rather it then being jobless and being deported.
