fucking go for it mate, definitely. Fugro are MASSIVE worldwide, and i've heard they're good employers. one of my ex schoolmates is an engineer for them and he gets posted all over the world working on their survey vessels, making a fortune. that kind of life isn't for everyone of course, but it's the sort of thing a young pup like yourself should do for a while if you can.

It would be in Oxfordshire though which probably isn't the cheapest place to live so I hope they're paying a decent wage or I wouldn't be able to afford to move down. But it deffinately sounds good.

Deathrow How'd the interview go CCF?

Interviews at 1pm. Got my competency based questions practiced and feeling confident, but not over confident :)

I've taken to seeing interviews as just going to meet someone to put a face to a name and talking. Rather than something to fear and just filling yourself up with worry.

That's the best way to do it. Easier said than done but if you approach it as a backwards/forwards chat about what you can offer them and what they can offer you rather than a one-sided grilling...like I said...easier said than done though.

Good luck. What are the competency questions? Are the personal questions like:

"Of these 5 choices, chose the one which most describes you"

or are they questions on Maths etc?

exactimundo. :)

and you should always remember that an interview is a two-way process - you're interviewing them as well. if you're right for the job, you're doing them a favour (and getting a problem off their desk) by taking the job. they can smell desperation a mile off, so show no fear!

There are normally set elements to competency questions, things to do with team work, personal development, difficult situations etc. They require you to recall a specific situation from your past working career or even life.

Most interviews I've had have used the same format. Google is your friend. They'll ask

'Can you think of a time when you have found it difficult to settle into a team. How did you overcome this and what was the eventuall outcome?'

Or

Can you think of a time when you've noticed something that could be improved in the company. What did you do and was this implemented?'

They normal ask around five questions so I've been able to build stock answers and adapt them as needed.

Yeah, it's easy to forget that you are doing them a favor too buy turning up to the interview and doing your best!

Right, after all that it's time to go for the bus!

Employed, same profession I've been doing for the last 18 years except now I'm doing it in England. But I do like it.
Why England? Who the hell knows cause I sure don't.

Well if you don't know why you're in England how the hell are we supposed to. You moved there. ;)

FUcking YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :D :D

Just got a letter through the door saying I've been accepted for the first stage the Oil & Gas Apprenticeship :D :D :D

Now I can get even more slaughtered today!!

I still have to pass the aptitude test but at least now I know they hadn't forgotten about me or written me off straight away. Phew.

Well done that man! :D

So if you pass the test will it involve going to college in Aberdeen or something?

Getreal: In what way do you make 'proper' kebabs?

> gibberings thread please

that really is excellent news deathrow, nice one. :)

i applied for a very similar thing with Shell when i jacked in uni at 19 but i didn't get in. positions were very limited and i think they all went to people who knew people. as far as i know, most of the people that do those jobs offshore start with apprenticeships like that, either through colleges or directly by the oil company. (well the younger ones anyway.)

so is the aptitude test something you do at their place, or do you fill out forms or what? i wouldn't worry too much about it really, it should be easy enough. might be worth brushing up on what maths you know though.

i also have great news i forgot to mention yesterday - i've FINALLY got an interview on monday for the offshore job i've been holding out for! i don't want to jinx it yet so i'll keep quiet till after monday. %)

Check you out moving off topic posts from your precious job thread but you'll happily let it go on and do it yourself in other threads. ;)

Well done Felix. :)

I'm sure you'll get it no problems, good luck.

(i didn't move anything, it was just a subtle hint from a massive hypocrite ;))

aye, cheers. i'm under the impression that i'm the only one in so far for these three jobs, so i'm quietly confident of getting something. (so much for me not jinxing it eh?)

i've been doing some research into the platform. it only went into production last year so it's practically brand new, and the accommodation is apparently like a 5 star hotel. cletus heard it was like a 70s Miami nightclub, so as long as it's somewhere in between i'll be happy. (as long as some big driller doesn't want to introduce me to his 'little friend' at night, that is.) :D

i really need to get something soon, this is the skintest i've been in a LONG time. 8o

Congrats felix, where is it?

Spade: They do it at colleges all over the shopt. One in Edinburgh and Falkirk are the closest to me but I don't think you get to chose.

I'm not sure where the aptitude test is, they didn't say in the letter, they said they'd contact me and let me know. To be honest, if I do have to go up to Aberdeen to do it it can only be a good thing - a good excuse for a night out but aye, I haven't done maths or that in about 6 years so I'll buy a few past paper books and brush up.

Good luck for the interview. Does this mean you'll be keeping a clear head tonight? :(
