Those pictures of the rig blow my mind.

Humankind ain't half capable of some incredible stuff sometimes, aye?

felix: that looks fucking awesome. Well done!

wh0re: I don't know how old you are but if you're prepared to start at the bottom then have a look on the bconstructive website. That's the website that I found all the companies offering apprenticeships in the construction industrsy - for me it was mainly Quantity Surveyors etc but there are LOADS of options. Have a proper read through the site cos it has loads of resources but some of them require a bit of searching.

Here's the website:

http://www.bconstructive.co.uk/homepage.asp

Don't underestimate it. There is a section that lists, in A-Z order, all the construction companies in its directory and then on the right there is a table that tells you what they offer i.e Apprenticeships, Gradtuate Positions, only Careers etc

It also has a map of the UK on the right which shows which company covers which area of the UK so for instance you hover over a company name and it shows on the map that it only operates in the South West of England and only offers Apprenticeships and Careers but not Graduate opportunities.

Ya get ma?

I have been unemployed for around 2-3 months and frankly it is getting old, I've been trying to find a job with no luck. I've been checking the job centre daily and the local newspapers along with gumtree but have had no luck.

Im not really bothered with what I am going to be doing as I have limited experience which is within construction/warehouse work.

I just need some advice for finding a job, thanks.

Dont know what type of work you are looking for but temp work can get you office experience. My friend got a temp job and was placed in one of the top 4 accountancy firms. He was only doing menial shit, data entry and cross checking lists of sales from big retailers but now he can blag on his CV that he has had a year of marketing experience with a top firm. Winner.

it's fucking amazing, you don't know the half of it. this is engineering on a huge scale, just the kind i love. the heavy lift & pipe-laying vessel Saipem 7000 is capable of lifting 14,000 tonnes and is one of the wonders of the modern world. it fills me with childlike boyish glee to think that i might be there to witness it doing its stuff. well, let me rephrase that: i'm gonna make damn sure i am! %)

nice site there deathrow. how's things going with the aptitude test thing?

^^ I love that sort of stuff. It makes you want to just miniturize it and then re-assemble it all :D I can't get any sorta length from that pic. How long is it?

felix: Haven't heard from them yet. They said they'd be in touch to arrange the test. I sat another test this morning which was the SECTT test that I was told I should sit if I wanted to be an Electrician (which I'm also trying to do). The test was pretty easy but I had to step inside a smelly college with smelly students.

But it's this O&G one that I really want to do. If they want me up in Aberdeen to do the test then I'll bend over and ask when cos I - WANT - IT. :X

click on the wikipedia link above:

General characteristics
Class and type: Semi Submersible Crane Vessel
Displacement: 172000mt (Heavy Lift)
Length: 198 m (Overall)
Beam: 87 m
Height: 43.5 m (Keel to Deck)
Draft:

10.5 m (Transit) 18.0 m (Survival)
27.5 m (Heavy Lift)
Installed power: 70000 kW
Propulsion: 12 No. Thrusters
Speed: 9.5 knots (18 km/h)
Crew: Up to 700 persons

it also did a lot of work for cletus's project, including laying 35 miles worth of pipe at the bottom of the sea. amazing.

i'm glad you've decided on sparkying - that's the best decision for several reasons. good money, very respected, not too much heavy lifting or getting your hands dirty, and being a sparky offshore is pretty much a pinnacle of sparky-dom. you're talking about MASSIVE voltages & currents to keep things going there. huge gas driven jet engine turbines providing power in the megawatts (enough to power a small city), with exhausts the size of houses that'll take your eyebrows off if you get too close. ;)

Felix it looks pretty trendy on that rig not as I imagined them at all. Are they all like it? I kinda pictured sort of dirty, tatty, smelly rooms that were run down and not to nice for some reason.

heh. no, most of them are not like this at all, this one is particularly reknowned for being so plush. other platforms can be pretty nice (and getting nicer as they're refitted) but this one takes it to a whole other level. some of them are complete shit-tips. in its favour is the fact that it supplies 10% of the whole UK oil supply, so they can afford it. ;) the other unusual thing is that there are no bunk beds - they're all on ground level. saves lawsuits or lost time incidents when us oldies fall out of the top bunk, going for a pee at night thanks to our weak bladders. :D

don't get me wrong though, the changing rooms and 'tea shacks' will no doubt be pretty mingin. all those scousers, geordies, and weegies, you see ?

Congrats, felix. Try not to fall overboard.

I must comment that it is fairly amusing the TV-Video screens in the break areas are all imitating aquariums :|
aye, falling overboard is probably the thing that scares me the most about working offshore. especially getting on and off a helicopter in high winds up on the helideck. sometimes your luggage is the only thing stopping you getting blown off.

btw, the glass things on either side of the TV ARE actually aquariums - perhaps they didn't have the fish delivered yet? :D

My mate was telling me that if there's a fire the first thing you're supposed to do is dive into the water? Yet when training they were told about a fire on a rig, all those who dived in the water froze to death or drowned and all those who stayed on the burning rig survived.

Choices, choices eh. :)

well that's total bollocks. going into the water is a complete and utter LAST RESORT, the flames have to be licking your arsehole for you to even consider that. most evacs are done by helicopter (calmly and quietly), then by the big lifeboats (in a bit of a panic), then by the wee liferafts (oh fuck we're all going to die). only when they're ruled out would you consider climbing down as low as you can and very carefully entering the water (in your full survival suit, hat/gloves/spray hood etc.). as for jumping off from the platform level 1 or 2 hundred feet - yes, i'm sure a few Piper Alpha survivors are glad they did so, but that was the most extreme scenario possible. no data exists to say how many did so and broke their necks or backs in the process. 8o

getting things into perspective, working offshore is a much safer place to be than on a building site or in a shop. safety is the number 1 thing that is rammed down your throat from the minute you get up, till the minute you go to sleep. or is that a geordie scaffolder's cock?

it's like air travel - when it goes wrong, it goes very very wrong and it makes the headlines - but in comparison to everything else the risks are tiny. :)

Got the PM felix. Sounds amazing. I'm excited for you :D

Without jynxing it - when do you reckon you'll hear for definite whether or not you've got it?

Where did my other post go?

I posted a response to Felix's last post yesterday night.

I got a job! =D

Not the one I had an interview for, they're still deciding apparently, not that it matters now.

'Data Entry Associate' for a well known international software company.

From what I can gather I'll be part of a 5 person team handling Payroll, expenses, reports and general organisation for staff overseas.

Phoned them this afternoon, had the job by 5pm!

I start on Monday!

Whoohooo I have justification to go for some pints tonight and watch my dad play a gig in a certain local!
