If you quit your last job ... then have a decent reason i.e. anything other than it was a shit job so you left :\

Even if you did quit your job for no particular reason you're entitled to Income Support which will be means tested.

They seldom if ever actually go to the trouble of contacting an employer unless your reasoning gives them cause.

Everyone that's paid NIC (based on last tax year normally so 2006-2007 or maybe 2007-2008 depends when HMRC provide the info) is entitled to 6 Months contribution based JSA with no questions about income i.e. savings ... after that period means testing comes into effect IIRC.

I think the figures are in the 8K range (full payment) then a sliding scale to 16K (at 16K you get nothing) ... so if you have say 10K start a steady flow of cash withdrawals to take you under.

Housing support is means tested ... but you are entitled to 12 months interest ONLY support IIRC if you have a mortgage. Rented accomodation is pretty much covered indefinately (also means tested). It's a total nightmare getting housing support ... it can take months before payment is eventually received.

No way will they backdate JSA unless you were in hospital or someit.

Good luck :\

i don't understand what use £60 a week is to people though. it's a help, of course, but how can someone with bills to pay live?

Compared to nothing at all it can be made to go a long way.....it's a whole different outlook, usually involving shoplifting etc.

You can't ... except in summer and on a crash diet ... Always make sure you're last to get a round in ;)

Eat first, send them all a cheque for £1 after.

in happier news, in the past two days i've had three agencies get in touch about jobs. unfortunately none of them are really what i'm after. one of them is very well paid but would mean 3 hours commuting in the rush hour every day. and it's a shirt n tie job in a big corporate office. and would be boring as hell.

i don't know whether to go for it or not. i do need the dosh (yesterday!) but i don't want to end up feeling as if my life force is being sucked out of me. 8)

the JSA folk said it would be about £60.15/week, by the way.

im gonna phone for a jsa interview this week. am i still gonna be able to claim even though i quit my last job??

any1 had any experience using temp agencies for like admin type work? as far as i can see that would be my best option to get a wage in quickly.
last time i had to sign on i was living at home so it wasnt that bad. iv never had to try n claim for my rent n shit before. is it gonna be a mission to get cash out them?? any advice at all would b appreciated =D

It's an absolute arse to get cash out of them, I never got my HB when I claimed because they were so delayed I moved out of the bloody place by the time they got round to me.

Agencies are good for admin work though, you can get something with no experience at all.

Three hours??? Where's it based?

Take it!

That is all :)

For all the reasons you always hear - namely that it's easier to find work once you're in it ( actually I'm not sure about that one being true) & it'll get you burning lots of fuel, which would be good for your brothers job prospects ;)

Obviously the "that is all" comment was a little hasty.

Is that 3 hour commute via bike, Felix? If not, why not bike it, while it's summer, and meanwhile keep looking for something else? :\

i meant 3 hours total per day. it's at the south of aberdeen. and it would be slightly quicker by bike. ;)

i know they say it's easier to get a job when you're in a job, but the reality is that you don't do anything about it, if you're anything like me. and it wasn't a definite offer anyway, they were just asking if i was interested.

nah, i need to go offshore. :\

i've just cashed in an ISA i've been paying into for 9 years, so that'll keep me afloat for a while.

Hey, an hour and a half each way isn't that bad. I've got friends who do that and that's from one side of the city to the other.

Granted, it isn't perfect. The last thing you want to do after a day of work is sit in your car for 90 minutes but it's not bad compared to what some folk have to do.

i've commuted to exactly the same area before, for about 8 months. it's not just the actual commuting time, it's the fact that you've to get up early as fuck to beat the worst of the traffic. and by the time you get home you're knackered and can't be arsed doing anything. every day i did it, a little piece of me died inside. :\

it would be 70 miles every day. my car only gets about 18mpg. you do the math(s). (cos i can't be arsed. ;))

this is one of the main reasons i want to go offshore. i don't want to commute.

i was so spoiled in my last job. 4 minutes away from the house. *cries*

I only did a 3 our in total commute for a week and it fucking did my head in! I wasn't getting home until 7.30pm and by time i'd got myself sorted out with dinner, sorted stuff for the next day I was too shattered to do anything for myself!

Since i've moved closer it takes me 40 minutes there and about an hour in rush hour home depending on metro links now.

I spend about 3.5hrs traveling each day to get to my jobs, one is only 5 miles away in a straight line but takes me and hour and a half each way via 2 buses to get to! It takes 35 mins on the bike but that means riding up hill (and on some tiny roads through an industrial estate with massive trucks on them!).

Fair enough, mate - enjoy your well earned taste of 'freedom' ;)

Keep what you want firmly in mind and it'll come %)

No sniggering - thank you :|
