EADD Heroin discussion v.20 -- You've come a long way baby

so I tend to use non narcotic stuff for breakthrough which works better than u might think

absolutely, ive found otc nsaids to be superior to opis on occasion (overdoing good quality heroin for 24 hours plus almost always leaves me with a splitting headache, which 600mg ibuprofen puts right again within 30 minutes or less)

ive even managed to temporarily reduce leg ache with the same during heroin withdrawal with the same dose and drug. its only paracetemol that i find completely useless for pain, no justification for using it at all imo unless ur gut cant take nsaids or if you have a high temp fever

Fentanyl gave me a wicked headache that almost nothing would shift.....I found aspirin to be as good as owt

Another problem.whether ur on gear or long term pain management is when you go to hosptal for something like surgery or someting painfull is what can they give you realistically?

When I had my tumour removed I was already on 300mcg/hour of fent which is the equivalent of Ithink over 1000mg of oral morpbine and tthey sent me home with a pack of 28 codeine 30mg......I was like WTF!

But there was nowt else they could really do. If you have an accident and need acute pain relief then there entanox and ketamine but they can't exactly send u home with that after surgery. I know that getting adequate pain relief when your already on daily opiates is something that worries alot of people that I've talked to about it here on BL.

when I came outa surgery,I had excrutiating post op pain
they had given me an epidural too
but once that was gone..all they could give me on top of my regular 400mg MST a day,was a patient controlled morphine drip-but that just gave you like 5mg at a time so I was wading through them and they were useless
eventually, after about 4 days, all i was getting was my regular script and some paracetamol
I used to put my oxygen mask on at night so I didn't keep everyone awake with my crying and yelling.
now I am so scared that I will have to go back

About 6 years ago I sustained a stab wound to my hip while at work and had to have it excised and packed (got infected...long story)...anyway everyday they would unpack the gauze which had stuck to the inside of the wound and repack it which was the most excruciatingly painful thing I've ever endured and all the gave me was 2 paracetamol and a 50mg diclofenac....the doctor though that cos I was prescribed opiates I was "utter scum" and had no sympathy... Eventually the nurse who was doing it screamed at him that she was refusing to do it cos it was barbaric to put someone through that and he eventually conceded to give me entanox...I heard him say to the nurse "well that's what we do back in India all the time" and she yelled "were not in India...this is England its not a fucking third world country...we don't treat people like that"....... I could have married her!!!!

I don't know if he did actually. The nurses knew but he was the co shltant who showed up for 5 mins a day and saw "methadone" on my MAR chart and drew his own conclusions. In fact he even intimated that the only reason having a huge chunk of gauze yanked out of a 3inch deep open would (when its practically glued in place by the dry blood) is that I "must have a low tolerance to pain due to all the drugs I've probably took"...... I can see why some people have a low opinion of NHS doctors. At the time my local PCT had a shortage of hospital doctors and were bringing them in from every third world country you could think off. Some hardly spoke English..... It was a sorry state. In fa g I don't know if u read about it but one doctor mistakenly gave a cancer patient 100mg diamorphine and killed him cos he was supposed go give 100mg pethidine and got the two mixed up

i am scared if the day comes and i end up in hospital for something.

morphine or heroin doesn't work on me at all. but oxy's and other opiates do. the doc wont beleive me if i say that, they will just think i am allergic to all opiates. ah well.

I've nothing against foreign doctors, some of them are amazing (an indian surgeon saved my brother's life because his small, nimble fingers were able to stitch the severed artery in his nose), but it should be a prerequisite that any medical practitioner in this country can speak near perfect English, to avoid the kind of mistake you've outlined above.

The thing with ending up in hospital for something serious enough to require being given opiates is it happens when you least expect it or have any time to prepare......i.e. an accident of some sort which by its very nature is unexpected.

You would think so wouldn't you but sometimes apparently not. I've spoken to doctors who could barely speak a word. Don't get me wrong...without foreign doctors and nurses the NHS would collapse as there just aren't enough domestic ones and some are absolutely wonderful but some leave a lot to be desired.

yeah - and if they inject any amount of morphine in me it will make the pain 10x worse.

much respect to you. someone HAS to do it. thank you :)

Thanks...I'm not a doctor BTW I'm ambulance staff although I did go to medical school but dropped out in my second year for financial reasons....i got my degree in financial economics of all things.....fat lot of good that did me.

In what way would you being given IV morphine make ur pain worse?

yeah mate i know. much respect to you, you got no idea. i actually think doctors/ or whatever have an easier job.

morphine and the same with heroin (whatever RoAs) .. do nothing but make me feel a little uncomfortable. and then sick if i take more. like, it just doesn't work on me, so @ best it wont work, then if they give me more it will make uncomfortable or really sick. give me crazy nightmares.

10mg oxycodone will get me high as a kite and provide the pain-releif. kinda weird.

I had to spend 5 days in hospital after my first cycle of chemo as I got neutropenia and I told them I was on a methadone script.
The nurses were brilliant, they called up our local drug support agency and by teatime of my first day in hospital they had sorted out my methadone and bought it round for me at the same time each day.
My main worry about pain management is that no one can find a vein left on me to administer pain relief or anything else. I had to have a picc line in otherwise there was no way they could give me chemo. Regretting fucking up my veins with gear now.

Yeh, I was expressing this same concerns to englandz74 a while ago. Luckily, I haven't needed to put it to the test yet, but he assured me there is always a way to give pain relief if necessary...

Yeah I'd like to see some soft sbite doctor drive a 7 tonne vehicle at 60mph in a 30mph town centre at rush hour and have to deal with abusive pissed cunts at 2:00am on a Saturday night...they'd shit themselves haha!!

You know maybe u could just explain what you've just said and an understanding doctor might just give u oxy...its really no skin off they're nose....but if u were picked up in an ambulance you'd have no choice cos we don't have oxy....just morphine....anyway don't worry yourself about what might never happen. Life's to short and too precious mate.

that's when they will put that up your ass if they need 2 and can't find a vein

also is hospital is injecting all the time,(even a drip?) do IV users run into the same problems, same amount of time as an IV user at home?

edit - yeah i'm not worried at all. i kinda feel like nothing will ever happen to me lol.

but i know looking @ it when the time comes.

I'm no expert but I think for chemo they put in a central line like a Hickman line don't they?

Yeah there's always a way to administer pain relief....paramedics can do IM morphine or oramorph or entanox...loads of things (althoughthe only thing they will shove up your arss is rectal diazapam).

Thanks that's good to know that they would be able to give pain relief somehow.
Was a worry of mine about if I was in some sort of accident that the paramedics wouldn't be able to give me pain relief due to my crap veins.
Big up to paramedics, you do a great job and you are appreciated.

Normally they gave people chemotherapy by a vein in back of their hand I think but because they couldn't even get blood tests from any of my veins they had to put a picc line in to my arm in the bicep area.
They said this was a rare thing to do for someone having chemo due to the risk of infection from the picc line. I had the line in for 6 months otherwise I was fucked as this wouldn't have been able to treat me.
