you were in cheddar? I'm sorry but I am a bit obsessed with the cheddar gorge cheese company. They make chilli jam and all kinds of yummy relishes etc.

They were my inspiration to grow chilli plants so I can make my own chilli jam! but yes you should def go to their shop, its amazing! (I don't work for them by the way lol). :)

Chili jam Yummy, Don't go out that way often but i'll clock it nrxt time i'm their;)

I've got a chili plant as well , i had one years ago , My late Dad brought it home from work cos no one wanted it (he worked delivering 4 a flower shop)
It was fantastic n lasted longer than him:|
It was such a aggresive plant got loadsa chilllis from it, so i' decieded to get another this year .
 
Chilli jam sounds good!

I bought some tiny little chilli plants from the supermarket cos they were only £1.75 for 3, going to pot each one in a large pot in the hope that it'll grow big and strong. We've got a cayenne, a cheyenne and a scotch bonnet.

Just finished potting up my tomatoes and noticed my seed potatoes are sending up shoots, yay! My parents bought me a lily in a pot and lots of herbs so my outdoor bit is looking a lot greener :)
 
Seriously guys, chilli jam could quite possibly taste even better than it sounds!

Seems people are generally having quite a bit of success with chilli plants.

effie, I'm growing scotch bonnets too! Growing them from seeds this year but I had them from the supermarket last year and got loads of chillis from them :) The coolest thing tho is this year we have a green house :D I really wanna get some corn on the cob seeds (I think I mean sweetcorn) I'm pretty sure it is about time to plant them so i will get some from the garden centre at the weekend :D.
 
my mum has a set of chilli plants on the kitchen window sil thats sprouting out rather well

i was surprised i didnt think they would grow here
 
Mine are outside but I've been worrying about them so might bring them in, I was seduced by the heat wave..

Hope everyone's poppies are growing well! Just learnt that somniferum means sleep-bringing. <3 botanical names :)

Quick question gardening-peeps - my plants are all growing wonderfully (tomatoes, potatoes, herbs, chillis and lillies) and am really pleased with them all. I've got some miraclegrow plantfoot and can't remember what I was told about when and how often to feed them - what do you suggest?

How about my house plants?

My potatoes are going mental - keep covering them with more soil but they've almost reached the top of the grow sacks (been planted for a few weeks now). I presume this is normal and good? And once they pass the top of the bags I just let them grow as much as they like?

Finally, is it too late to grow some flowers? I can get seedlings/little plants if it's too late to germinate seeds.. the veg are wonderful but I fancy some flowers. I remember getting some good suggestions for good ones to grow in pots earlier in the thread :)

How about some nasturuims effie...very easy to grow from seed still and vigorous, they like poor treatment and soil, easy peasy and you can eat the leaves n' flowers.

I'm not feeding yet but likely to do so in the next few weeks but my peeps are in soil in the garden. Young babies don't need feeding until they are in the full on growth...when the flowers then fruits / veggies appear. Too early and they'll be over whelmed by too much nutrient.

Saying that I've had some troubles with me courgettes :|

Buddha space under the Rowan tree (as I found out) is now complete, pretty pleased with my hacking into the undergrowth to get to that space. Another 32ft of garden for our pleasure...I'm encouraging good intentions' wishes by tying a ribbon to the tree, got my prayer flags up there too. It takes an ole hippy to get into that. Lol :D Nice meditation place mind <3

My sunflowers are coming on just fine tho' sweetpeas too - well chuffed I am.
 
I was going to try courgettes, got a huge pot, but not managed to get going with that so might leave it til next year. I'll delay feeding everything for a bit then, thank you :)

Those flowers look lovely - any plants that thrive on poor treatment sound good to me! If I sow seeds now is it the right time, or should it be later? Or have I missed the window? Sorry, should probably google it, but I love nattering about gardening on here :D

Your Buddha-space sounds gorgeous. My prayer flags were blown down yesterday, going to put them up again tomorrow. I thought about tying some ribbons to my tomato canes :) you'll have to post up some pics of your hard work!

Ahh sunflowers - meant to get some going this year but was distracted with all the veg. Really pleased with it though. Ther herbs are growing like crazy - looking forward to a jug of Pimms with fresh mint leaves, and the mister cooked spaghetti with fresh basil and oregano today, yummy!

Really pleased you're having success with your herbs and veggies.

Nasturuims will grow fine now from seed, you'll be surprised at how easy they'll take. They'll climb and flow everywhere!

I'm also looking forward to cooking my courgettes I've hand-grown for us, likely to be sometime August now haha. Patience is not one of my virtues but plants will teach me 8)

My wee meditation space in the garden has become very special to me, though I spend a lot of time these days in the lotus all over...lot nicer than this really.

Not too late to plant a sunflower effie %) happy plants they are.

Looking forward to hearing how your tatties get on :D

I have some of this! On the box it says to feed em every two weeks, I only did mine about a week ago for the first time so I have another week to try it again. I wanted to say tho this stuff is pretty good in my opinion!

My melon and chilli plants growth was really slowing so I tried some of this. My melon melon has grown alot since doing this! My mum went on holiday for a week and was surprised by how much bigger it had gotten when she returned!

and me too! It's really satisfying to think 'I grew these from seeds!!'

You have to be careful with fertilizers generally and especially Miracle Gro. If you're growing in the ground then you'll probably never need it unless your plants are visibly yellowing or underperforming. If you're growing in pots then fertilizer becomes necessary when the plant has squeezed all it can out of the soil in the pot... you can usually tell as growth stops and the pot will be rooted out. Ie you'll see lots of roots (not just a few) coming through the drainage holes.

When starting a new plant on MG give it HALF the dose they say on the packet as it's easy to maim plants with too much. Some people prefer not to use MG on things they're going to eat and go for alternatives. There are some excellent organic tomato feeds out there, for example.

Oh, and every two weeks might be too often, best thing to do is see how your plants respond and alter your schedule according to that.
 
^^ you seem pretty clued up! do you know if pot ash is good as a fertiliser??

also, do you use insectiside or anything? Last year my chilli plants got quite damaged last year due to insects, luckily it seemed to be after I had the majority off them. But if not insectiside is there any other way to reduce/protect against insects or is it something you just have to put up with??
 
Never used potash myself but if it's potassium rich as I think it is then it'll come in handy when plants are in flower or producing fruit. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are the main elements which plants need (you'll see 'NPK' ratios on the side of many fertilizers) but adding too much of one thing can throw a plant out of whack quite badly and it can be a fucking NIGHTMARE trying to balance things out if you add too much of one substance. So if you're going to use it apply very sparingly!

If you're new to gardening then it might be best to do a season or two using all-in-one fertilizers just to get a feel for it then progress to more advanced stuff once you understand your plants' needs a bit better. There's no advice equal to experience of watching plants and working out what they need.

One organic supplement I'd definitely recommend is Maxicrop seaweed extract. There's a green bottle one and a brown bottle one, think the green has added iron and can make things too complicated but the brown one is fantastic, really good stuff and perfect for perking up plants which aren't quite right.

It's generally best to avoid insecticides on plants you're going to eat as levels can accumulate in any fruits- generally chillis are pretty resistant to insect attack but they sometimes take a battering. Some insecticides can wipe out useful insects too. I've never used them but on occasion I have sprayed plants which were getting a kicking with a mix of crushed garlic, chilli oil and a drop of washing up liquid diluted in water which is a pretty effective and non-toxic control.
 
thank you for the tips! I will degfinately look for the maxi crop brown bottle at the garden centre tommorow, cus I am kind of an amateur, (for this reason i think I'll stick to miracle grow for now, like i say it has really helped my melon plant out - its in a pot thingy not in the ground so I'm sure it can use the extra nutrients some times :0 this is only my second year and first year I didn't even use seeds, just plants! (I felt like I was cheating a bit so got seeds this year).

I will try ur insectiside out! especially as everything I am growing I am gunna eat :) one of my chilli plants has like half a leaf missing cus its being eaten. It may not sound like much but when you only have four leaves its a considerable proportion. Some of them are pretty small :9 plus chilli oil and crushed garlic actually sounds like a pretty tasty salad dressing or something without the washing up liquid :p

No problem, it's such a rewarding thing to do, plants can be beautiful and it is so satisfying consuming things you've grown from seed.

This is the brown bottle Maxicrop. It's quite expensive for a big bottle (about £7) but the plants love it and you use it very dilute. You need to store it somewhere cool though or it starts to ferment and I suspect that mucks it up.

my papaver somnerferum r sprouting nice, i decided to only water em from the bottom so once the seeds were in the soil they had to searcg out the water from below causing roots to grow oh so so,so, so,so happy BRIMZ check it ot my man
