EADD Gardening Club: Ploughing FUBAR's infertile Fields

We have been trying to grow tomatoes for the past two years, in ground and in organic growbags and both times we've got to the stage where we have green tomatoes but that blighty shit or whatever it is stops them from maturing, they just stay green with necrotic greyish black patches on them. Very frustrating indeed.

Probably not! My mum had some success but hers were grown next to a wall, is that what it is then..too much moisture?

We will be growing some potatoes as they easy and grow themselves, onions and beetroot are quite hassle free as well.

Yeah its an airborne thing that thrives in damp conditions, so even in a greenhouse they can catch it. But fingers crossed for a nice summer & no hosepipe ban. Beetroot are a good crop, I used to hate them till I grew them and someone made me fresh sweet sliced beetroot with olive oil & balsamic vinegar <3.

I got these sprouting today on a windowsill, its called Golden Wonder. Hot, dwarf, orange and upside down, whats not to like? Anyone i know with a birthday between now and sept is getting one whether they like chilli or not. They're ok in containers and heavy croppers.

Someone gave me some chilli jam last year and it was good I'm going to try & make it this year so that may cover xmas presents too =D .

They look lovely plants, wish I was one of your friends to get one :) I had no luck growing a chilli (or pepper plant) last year.

Been spending masses of time in the garden, oh what joy in hard-worked over muck :D ready for planting / seeding. New patio pots today with:-

  • lobellia - moondust mix
  • heritage sweetpea - miss willmott
  • sweetpea - ensign white
  • euonymus - mixed variegated (shrubs)

I'm going for trailing n' training flowers to go up wicker obelisks I bought. These will go with the lavenders and periwinkles I've already got in. The sun flowers, poppies and all the wildflowers are seeded.

We have a bit of a secret garden going on here in amongst the big shrubs & trees "up the back" - found a path! Have cleared some of it but it's like the wilderness up there 8o I think I'm going to get the man into it with "machinery" when he comes home...I like the idea of a mystery path leading to ? no idea it's so overgrown I can't tell a fuck where it's going to...

Still don't have a courgette plant, I think I'm going to have to buy seeds, germinate them and bring on a few plants on myself.

And the heathers got a haircut today too lol Pruning ftw

Chemical warfare has been declared :p

Die you slug cunts.

My neighbour has been working on our communal garden. It was a rubbish dump before (was annoying me that I pay a weekly fee for landscaping!)

However, things between us are a bit awkward at the moment, and he's sort of made it feel like it's HIS garden, and seems to have plans for it himself. Maybe once things calm down between us I'll ask him if I can have a wee spot to grow some veg, or herbs. I may buy him some seeds as a peace offering and a hint.

how about you just work out a deal? He does the garden and does upkeep and you grow veg that you both share? You get to enjoy the garden he created and he gets to enjoy the fruit and veg you've tended to?

That could be a lovely garden for you to sit out in the summer in Cherry, here's hoping your neighbour gives you a break.

Inspired by you people here to give veggies a go I've decided to grow courgettes. Like a 5 year old I've been all excited about planting seeds and watching them germinate indoors.

Massive pic of teeny plants. Day 11.

Lots of other flower seeds are germinating outside with mother nature, but I'm tempted to start some more sunflowers indoors so I can guarantee some big un's.

The cherry tree is blossoming too <3 Spring <3

So how's it all going for you other veggie-plant EADDers?

I fancy a fat Buddha too, my parents have got one sitting overlooking their pond :) need some more prayer flags too I think, got two strings up but my outdoors bit is far too beige and grey for my liking.. tempted to dangle some off the balcony but not sure what my neighbours would think!

Going to get some seed potatoes on the go v soon I think, don't want to miss the boat...

I saw a ace Buddah te other day at this kinda outdoor bric a brac yard , it really is a cool place they got alll sorts of weird & wonderfull Garden acsesories n the like .

I don't find the Grow bags 2 be all that for growing Toms . i used Hanging Baskets last year n was very pleased with the outcome.

(if I'd taken something as tacky as that home I would have been dead meat, LOL.)

ive all ready planted one batch of papaver sominerfrum and i will wait another month or two for the next lot all in 2 inch peat pots easier to move when they get bigger , each pot 2inches away from the other ,i only have a top floor balcony and aim to have 40-50 good poppies by the end of it all

Felix, I want that Buddha! Tacky Buddhism symbolism is the war forwards :D

Hope poppies go well Ollie..

Does anyone know if it's ok that I've not planted my seed potatoes yet? They've all spouted sat in my egg tray but doubt I'll be able to get any compost anytime in the next week... sprouts are between half an inch and an inch now generally

Talking to your plants

Does anyone else give their plants a bit of encouragement or a freindly word every now n then .
Some peeps rekon it works , i'ma tad sceptical but i've done far stupider stuff so i might have a chat with the guysn gals latter:)

I've got a tiny patch of graden to play with, not a scooby what to do with it. It is tiny though, maybe 7 foot long by 3 foot wide. With a large population of ferral cats who piss on everything. I go through a bottle of ammonia every other week it would seem.

Papaver it up mate, get rid of te cats n your laughin:)

Can't really get rid of the cats. Well I can, but I can't see myself setting out to poison half the streets pets. My parents had a cat that got cancer and they were pretty upset when it came to the end. Nevermind the shedloads of cash they wasted on "treatment" *

*treatment means getting fleeced by the vets for saline shots in my eyes.

But then again, I'm not a pet person :)
