lol, no, that maybe why my green manuring plans have taken a back seat, much easier hauling sacks of seaweed and boxes of fish waste up there...
Used to strim it down as finely chopped as I could, then double dig it in.
I'm not convinced it does as good a job as the fish and seaweed anyway.

just be patient, don't prod about in the soil looking for them, chilli and toms often take what seems like forever to germinate, then, just as you decide to give up hope, up they pop.
Bloody hell 
I appear to have purple sprouting broccoli and freaky brussels sprouts growing! Planted last late-August - things are so much slower up here aren't they.
The cherry tree isn't far off blooming - that's early! The bluebells

Grass needs cut.

More bloody tree leaves needs collected.

Housemate bought me a pot plant today though (of the non-pot growing variety, sadly) and I'm just biding my time til we move into the new house and I can grow pretty things

^ what are we looking at felix, I can see lots of things in that bark but anything in particular? Any chance of more pics of your garden, it sounds great.
I've got access to an abandoned & unwanted garden and I've made a start - weeded the strawberry patch,cut the grass, cleared a bit of the pond and sowed a bit of stuff in pots. I'll post pics later. I'm having to work with the junk that's lying around so its not pretty but hey.

Guys, I've only just started thinking about gardening and I am worrying I have left it a bit late
Basically, I have a yard (on top of the flat below's roof %)) which is south-facing and very sheltered. Last year I grew potatoes in sacks, courgettes, tomatoes, chillis, herbs, salad leaves and a few flowers and everything grew magnificently! I remember getting the seedlings going in here then transplanting them (except the chillis and courgettes which I was given as baby plants). The garden has been completely neglected for months and months now.. is it too late to get things going? Will I have to buy baby plants instead of seeds?
Any recommendations for other things to grow in my containers?
Finally do I need to get new compost rather than reuse the old soil? I presume it is nutrient-depleted but it seems a waste to throw it all away...

Germinated 20 tomatilos in a propegator, moved them over to little pots and all but 1 died...

Its not too late at all, most of the stuff that needs a long growing season like sweetcorn onions and parsnips you're not gonna be doing anyway. Lets not forget despite the weather its still only technically mid/late spring. And there's a lot to be said for baby plants rather than seeds especially if you don't have a space or a greenhouse.
I'd prioritise second early new pots & chillis (they need a long season if the fruits are going to 'set' - turn into chillis rather than flowers that drop off), plenty of time to sow courgette seeds, salads you can grow all summer, and I'd buy tom plants a bit later on.
Even with a veg patch its not quite time for most seeds, carrots etc. Nearly though. There's still chance of a late frost that would kill everything above ground.

Thanks b&w, I was thinking of going down the baby plants route to be honest.. I'll get some tatties on the go though
My chillis really took off last year, I had a bumper crop. Sadly didn't manage to save any seeds, but I think I'll get some baby plants again as they did so well last time.
I wish I'd taken a pic of my garden at it's peak - south facing, sheltered and no slugs/snails means it is a plant's paradise!

No garden here but did get around to planting me chili seeds this year. Came in handy kitform (cos seeds, soil and a pot are so hard to source individually 8)) and they're shooting up rapidly with the nice weather. Pot's probably a tad crowded but natural selection can sort that out surely? Am rather excited at having a crop or two of homegrown chilis on the way a few months from now

Each one needs potting on into its own pot Shambles, if you leave it too late all the roots will get tangled. If you leave them as they are they'll compete for food & light and you won't get a good crop just lots of weedy plants
They'll make nice free presents.I love this thread, I hope people take pics so we can compare at the season goes on.
^^ Thanks for the tip, B&W. Had a feeling that may be the case. Guess I'll have to invest in a bag of compost then. A whole fleet of chili plants along the windowsill would definitely be more impressive than a bucket of stragglers though.
Yum. I Scotch Bonnets. This 'ere kit is only Jalapenos but they're a decent all-rounder. If I get me thumb all greened up with this experiment I'll definitely look into expanding my portfolio though. Can imagine this gardening biznizz gets addictive.
