EADD Film Recommendations v5 - TBC

I watched that tree of life too and felt similar - parts of it were nice and moving, parts were profound, parts were nicely filmed, put parts were just too pretentious (even for me) - somehow the overall result was unsatisfying; and yet it still stayed with me a bit (but maybe only because it felt like it was supposed to - a paint-by-numbers arty film). I'll have a go at turbo kid when i get a slot.

I mentioned in the what's on tv thread (cos it was on tv), but have you seen Mama? I enjoyed that as a film.

Not come across Mama? but will have a looksee in the TV thread in a bit.

I was actually quite surprised to discover Terence Malick directed Tree of Life as he is anything but a straight out of film school uberwanky wanker. Definitely not one of his best but would explain why the good bits were genuinely good... although how the fuck he thought the Calvin Klein approach to existential angst was appropriate or desirable I truly do not know.

Been meaning to ask you what that semi-animated film you recommended a while back was called actually, Vurt. Really liked that one but buggered if I can recall the title and what to get ahold of it again.

Me too. Mentioned before i'm sure, but i rewatched the newest judge dredd film again the other day and remembered how much i liked it - it just really captures judge dredd and the atmosphere of 2000ad for me - the chin is especially accurate (and he never takes his helmet off like that helmet sly stallone did)

That newer dredd is wicked, thought it was gonna be shite,

I guess Congress? I love that film. I read the book a while back by stanislaw lem (solaris etc) - that's worth a read too - quite different to the film: more focussed on the drugs side than VR like the film (ignore me if it wasn't congress, though do read the book (it's quite short and funny and easier to read than a lot of old scifi)

^ Nope. Not that one (although I will be d/l that one too so thanks all the same =D). This one was kinda surreal with almost WB stylee animated sections. I'm really struggling to recall the plot but wasn't druggy as such.

Some films wot I haz wotched recently...

Self/less - rather liked this one. Dying billionaire is the latest customer of a very exclusive cloning company which has the USP of transferring the personality into the new body. I'd be spoiling plot points if I went much beyond that but I thought it was pretty well done. Nowt Earth-shattering but worth a watch.

Anti-Social - enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Young street-artist is on the cusp of gaining the attention of the international art world whilst his elder brother is part of a crew robbing jewellers, drug dealers and such like. Add in the former's wide-eyed American model girlfriend and y'all can probably work out which direction things go in... A cut above most gangstarrr Brit-flicks imo.

^ Ooh! I likes me a lil Quay Bros.

Tonight's watchings - Narcopolis - was considerably less... well, just considerably less in general tbh. Low budget (natch) Brit sci-fi flick set in a "near future" world where drugs have been not only legalised but apparently completely deregulated. There's some time travel stuff chucked in too but can't really say too much more about the plot - mostly cos it's barely coherent. Spectacularly bad in many ways so just warning any others that may be sucked in with promises of a film about a post-legalisation world - it really is worse than you are expecting no matter how low your expectations may be.

Another recent viewing which was immediately regretted was War Pigs. WWII flick starring Mickey Rourke and Dolph Lundgren sounded like a laugh but this was just plain embarrassing. I have no idea what the people responsible for it thought they were doing or who was supposed to enjoy it but they've done a remarkable job of managing to tick just about every box of filmic badness other than the "so bad it's good" one. It appears to be a cinematic interpretation of one of the less memorable missions from a PS2-era CoD game. Only without the depth, action, humour, realism or character. Impressively poor. And that is the only impressive thing about it.

Rounding off this week's trio of shitey films is Blunt Force Trauma. A kind of half-arsed attempt at crossing Fight Club with Thirteen. Significantly better than the above two* but still significantly worse than most any other pretty bad film you can think of. Mickey Rourke is in this one too. Perhaps that should have been warning enough but I actually found him the least irritating character in it. Possibly cos he's only in the last ten minutes where you can breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that the ending you'd guessed approximately a minute in to the film was now in sight.

*that's the above two, as opposed to the previously mentioned two - just to be clear

Watched 'Vacation', (comedy) when I was high last night. Sadly not even after nearly an 8th of dope was I high enough to pay attention to this, terrible. I should have known by the 6.2 on imdb, never ever go below a 7, as I've found they are generally awful. It's a golden rule of thumb.

Also watched Straight Outta Compton
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1398426/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Pretty good, kept fairly true to the tale and well worth a watch.

I want to watch this tonight. Resurrection of Jake the Snake. About the recovery of some wrestler through a yoga programme, it's been rated highly by a lot of places. 8.5 on imdb
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4016226/
but can't find a download can anyone find me one?

Also got Avengers Age of Ultron, Dope or San Andres all made this year. Anyone recommend which one I should watch?

If they can they can't mention it here cos links to (or even naming of) copyright-infringing torrent or streaming sites is verboten on BL (due to being illegal and all that).

That War Pigs just looked and sounded awful and I skipped it :D

A wise choice indeed, Bear. Shockingly poor film :!

In other shockingly poor film news... watched summat called The Walking Deceased t'other night. I kinda knew from the title it was gonna be bad but bad zombie movies are often also quite good. This one was mostly just plain bad. Couple of good gags here and there but seemed to miss so many opportunities. It's a fairly close parody of the first couple of seasons of The Walking Dead and they really should have been able to do more with it even with the low budget. The zombie effects and gore were actually pretty decent but script and cast were rather amateurish. Watchable... but only just (and only if you really don't have owt more promising to hand).

My other recent viewing was Amnesiac (aka Unconscious) which is another from this recent glut of low budget, very amateurish stuff there seems to be so much of of late. This one actually had a bit of style to it but completely fell apart towards the end. Has more than a faint whiff of Misery about it plotwise... I don't think anybody involved will be expecting Oscars in this case though. Fella wakes up after a car accident with no memory and is tended to by a rather chilly woman claiming to be his wife. As his memory returns he begins to wonder what happened to the daughter he keeps getting flashbacks of has. All fairly predictable up until the twist towards the end which is not so predictable but also makes no sense whatsoever and kinda spoils what could have been a decent enough low-budget thriller. Still the best of everything I've mentioned in my last couple of posts though - just that ending that causes a bit of wincing :!

If you like the awful zombie movies - have you seen Navy Seals vs Zombies :D, it's really bad (not even in a good way) just awful. He was out the other day so I watched a few of the awful movies (he hates them but I quite enjoy them) Spit on your grave three, shark lake, soldiers of the dammed.

Hidden is worth a watch - pretty strange movie.

On your recommendation, I watched 'The Martian', Bear. I did rather enjoy it but, after watching 'Interstellar' not long ago, it seems Hollywood have been spending a lot of money trying to rescue Matt Damon from space recently :p

glad you enjoyed it - I actually enjoyed it more than 'Interstellar' as thought it was a better story and not just eye candy.

We watched what I have to consider the worst movie I have seen in a very long time Earthquake vs Tsunami at the end it did get pretty funny with the awful special effects and stupid acting but it was pretty bad.

I'm waiting for sharkopus vs wharewhale - makes sharknado look like a blockbuster :D

Watched Straight out of compton a few days ago... highly recommend. wicked film

Southpaw well worth a watch 7/10. About the comeback of a boxer, on par with Straight outta Compton. Sicario just been to the movies and saw it smoked a heap of blunts in the car park lol, 4/10 honestly didnt rate it.

Went to see The Martian 3D in the cinema last weekend.
Wasnt expecting much was Pleasantly surprised good movie story and top performance from matt damon.

Really cant wait to see this. Matt Damon is a great actor (maybe not technically) but his likability and screen presence makes up for any shortfall.

CANNOT WAIT for the next bourne film.
