Salvia is literally the most intense psychedelic I have ever taken. It's the only psychedelic that has really thrown me out of reality completely, making me forget who I was, where I was, and what I had taken. I've read reports of insane experiences with this novel plant, but of course, nothing could prepare me for the actual first-hand experience. It did exceed my expectations dramatically.
At an outdoor rave down near Los Angeles, I had taken a pill of relatively clean ecstasy, having been tested to only contain MDMA. Although this wasn't first-hand information, from what I could discern from the effects, it didn't feel speedy really at all -- just a clean roll feeling.
In a tent, I met someone that I had previously talked to on webboards before the party, and we talked for a bit. He revealed that he had a bit of salvia extract (20x), and he offered to let me have a bit. I've always been interested in the drug, and normally I'd probably be reluctant to try this drug in that sort of setting, but because of the loss of inhibitions due to the E, I was more than willing to give it a go. I smoked a small amount at first, and this brought no effects other than a strange, dizzying feeling in my head that quickly subsided. I decided I'd have another, slightly bigger hit.
This time, he held the pipe for me, explaining that this time I would be sure to drop it. I took a big pull from the pipe, and held it in. My recollection is fuzzy at this point, because as far as I was concerned, a year passed in my head in the space of five seconds. I didn't know who I was, or what I was. I felt at one with my surroundings. I wasn't even exactly sure what "my surroundings" were. I forgot that I had taken anything. I was sure this reality was the real reality, and it had always been this way. From what I remember, I was in a swirling blue room (it was blue probably from the color of the tent itself, although the room looked nothing like a tent) with images of the people in the tent repeating off to infinity.
At some point, I remembered I had taken salvia. Although, oddly enough, I was convinced nothing happened, and the drug was worthless. This continued for several minutes until I had a massive epiphany -- I was tripping harder than I ever had in my entire life, and the salvia worked!
From this point on, I was a bit terrified. It was like an incredibly intense mushroom or LSD trip, replete with fractals, bizarre images, and double, triple, and quadruple vision. The two things that kept me from completely losing it were the certainty that it would only last a few more minutes, and the MDMA high, which was slowly coming back to me and comforting me like a big comfy mental bean bag. Another strange effect was that everything looked like it was vibrating, like the whole world was experiencing a huge earthquake. After a few minutes more, I ventured a walk around, and I felt surprising lightweight, like I was floating.
The visuals lasted for at least ten minutes, slowly subsiding in strength. I continued to have minor visual effects for the next half hour. They were almost phenethylamine-like in character. I'm not sure if this is what happens with salvia by itself, or if the MDMA somehow increased the intensity of the visual effects.
On the plus side, I continued to have a fantastic roll afterwards, which surprised me. In fact, I would almost say that I had a powerful afterglow from the salvia, which felt wonderful side by side with the MDMA euphoria.
In retrospect, the salvia experience was totally inhuman, unique, and frightening. Of course, I'd love to attempt it again! I'm convinced that the MDMA helped me deal with the more terrorizing aspects of the trip, although I can't say this for sure until I try salvia by itself. I'm also greatful that I had sober, experienced people around me in the tent to help me through it. For hours after the trip, I couldn't stop talking about it. It was mesmerizingly fantastic, and I still wonder today why it's still legal in this day and age!
Good stuff -- easily the most unusual experience of my life thus far. :D
