E-cigarettes: New smoking draws little fire

Re. nicotine cardiotoxicity - Is it not more cardiotoxic than cocaine on a 1:1 (mg to mg) basis?

Edit - cigarette tobacco smoke (which apparently contains - among many other things - polonium-264, which is a extremely toxic and can cause cancer) would be carcinogenic whereas e-cigs wouldn't. However, the nicotine is what messes with your heart (and may be habit forming). At least, that's how I've understood it. I could be wrong, and I'm too out of it to go googling for references.

What does this even mean? 1-10 mg of cocaine won't do a whole hell of a lot, and the mechanisms of the two compounds are very different.

If nicotine isn't the cause of strokes, heart attacks, and heart disease in cigarette smokers, then what causes those conditions? I thought that nicotine constricts the blood vessels, which causes those cardiovascular problems and stroke risks.

Carbon monoxide replaces oxygen in blood, to keep up with this the heart must work harder which can cause unneeded stress. This causes even more stress on the heart when combined with nicotine, as it results in the release of vasopressin which constricts the blood vessels.

Smoking also causes a build up of fatty tissue in blood vessels, blocking them but I'm not sure why or how it actually causes this.

It simply means that 1-10mg of nicotine is more toxic to the heart than 1-10mg of cocaine, nothing more.

Cocaine was used for comparison because when it comes to street drug-related adverse reactions affecting the heart, it's usually at the top of the list.

Cocaine wasn't used for comparison to discuss its recreational dosage range.

i would rather have people smoke these than cigarettes, but they still need to learn a little constraint. my little sister breaks her damn thing out while we're eating at a restaurant, at the movies, etc. it's pretty obnoxious.

Yes, and this type of comparison is meaningless. I could also argue that ethanol is essentially nontoxic using the same logic (a typical dose (even a single shot) of alcohol weighs multiple grams, while most other sedatives are way more potenet).

They have been banned in hospitals, schools, doctors, government buildings ect in the uk... Would probably have nothing to do with the billions in tax the government lost last year...
“We don't know enough about the risks of these so-called e-cigs, so were banning them until further notice”... Since when does anything ever get un-banned?

Yes, and this type of comparison is meaningless.

I disagree. The amount of nicotine ingested varies significantly depending on the individual's tolerance and method of ingestion or absorption. That includes the following:

Chewing tobacco, Cigars, Blunts, Cigarillos, Little cigars, Cigarettes, Kreteks, Roll-Your-Own, Creamy snuff, Dipping tobacco, Dissolvable tobacco, Dokha, Gutka, Shisha tobacco, Snuff, Snus, Tobacco gum, Tobacco water, Topical tobacco paste, and more.

Indeed, you could because you're comparing a typical (intoxicating) dose of alcohol vs a typical/recreational/therapeutic dose of <insert potent sedative here>, which is great and all, but means little in relation to what I originally wrote.

AFAIK, they aren't going to be banned outright, but they're looking into making them only marketable as medical devices, and thus only available on prescription.

Obviously you don't know how to smoke then. ;)

I'm not sure what you mean. Cigarettes really don't do much. The first few times give you that nicotine rush, but afterwards a cigarette is pointless apart from feeding your addiction. I've only been smoking for a few years but I regret starting, it was nice at the start but now I find it disgusting and I notice its effects on my health. I just haven't been able to quit yet.
