Salesperson Jose Figueras was careful to say the product was not a smoking-cessation device but a "high-performance nicotine delivery system." The distinction mattered — for legal reasons.

The e-cig business today looks like a jackpot. The Wall Street Journal recently estimated the market to be worth about $300 million per year; analysts expect that number to skyrocket to $1 billion in the next year or two. With 42 million people in the United States who smoke cigarettes daily, there are still plenty of customers left to convert.

But how long this bonanza will last — and who might reap the long-term profits — is very much in question. The American Lung Association has warned that e-cigarettes "may do more harm than good." The American Cancer Society says, "There are questions about how safe it is to inhale some substances in the e-cigarette vapor into the lungs." And the FDA has expressed concern children will use them and become addicted to nicotine. There is little oversight of who sells e-cigarettes; the brothers who own Vapor Shark have criminal records, for instance. And vendors fear Big Tobacco will take over the business in the end. In April, the FDA is expected to release proposed regulations that could redefine the industry.

A lot of money is at stake. "E-cigs could surpass consumption of traditional cigs in the next decade," says Bonnie Herzog, an analyst who follows the tobacco industry for Wells Fargo.

E-cigarettes were invented by Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, in 2003. Using battery power, these devices heat up "e-liquid" or "juice" and convert it into a vapor that can be inhaled. They started appearing in the United States around 2007 and were sold first through primitive websites and then at kiosks in malls.

That's where Brandon Leidel, now 37, picked up his first e-cigarette. "I was a smoker, and I had quit for five days, and I was struggling," he says. At the Dadeland Mall, "a guy stuck one in my face. I thought they were really stupid, but I was desperate. It was a way-overpriced piece of crap," but "I was blown away by it."

Many of the e-cigarette companies online had poor-quality websites and shady business practices, Leidel says. So he and his brother Scott decided they could do better.

They weren't typical young entrepreneurs. Both have criminal histories. In their teens and early 20s, both brothers were caught burglarizing neighbors' houses and cars and admitted to having drug addictions. In 1999 and again in 2001, Brandon was convicted of cocaine (crack) possession and went in and out of jail and rehab. In 2006, he was driving a stolen Astro van and fled police; he pleaded guilty to grand-theft auto, eluding police, and resisting arrest and was put on three years' probation.

Leidel admits, "In my 20s, I had all kinds of problems" but says he's been sober for six and a half years. "When I went into recovery, my life changed," he says. Also a drummer, Leidel says he worked for record labels and started doing online marketing for bands. He and Scott then founded their own multimedia marketing company, the Hand Media.

Using their web skills, they launched Vapor Shark online in 2010 and moved into a shopping plaza on Bird Road in March 2012. Though they initially had a Ping-Pong table and kegs of beer on tap, few customers partook; they just wanted the product.

Vapor Shark combines parts from three manufacturers to make its own e-cigarette. The company's liquids, Leidel says, "are made here in-house." Nicotine levels can be customized, from zero to 36 milligrams. "We have a guy back here — he's our juice man." A $20 bottle of juice should last a customer a month and a half.

Leidel says, "All of these electric cigarette liquids have the same ingredients: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, natural and artificial flavorings, and pure nicotine." Though the ingredients are FDA-approved for foods or lozenges, there are no long-term studies about inhaling them.

Either way, they're fucking retarded

You know how I know?

All the 15 year old kids dressed in black out front at the mall think that they're awesome, and "smoke" them all the time

I remember seeing the first mall kiosks with these few years ago, and I was like wow that's retarded, unless they make a version that works with weed/hash oil

i don't see how they are retarded, are u referring to the guys that made the website or just ecigs or people who smoke ecigs and think they are cool?

if pure nicotine is not carcinogenic then i am fucking switching over, i think the tobacco lobbyists will stop any research into whether ecigs are harmful or not as it will cripple their profits terribly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine#Toxicology

i can't get a straight answer on whether nicotine is carcinogenic or not, the other ingrediants in ecig liquid i'm sure are fine but the pure nicotine is what worries me. Some people on BL have said it is not carcinogenic at all and others disagree. So hopefully some studies can give evidence one way or the other. In either case, ecigs are going to be far more healthy than an actual cigarette, so the big tobacco companies are fucked.

Nicotine, as one of the most biologically active chemicals in tobacco smoke and smokeless tobacco, has been the subject of intense scientific scrutiny. It is now known that nicotine, working through the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain, is responsible for the addictive nature of tobacco use; the alkaloid has also been implicated in pathologies such as delayed wound healing and reproductive disorders. Studies on the cellular effects of nicotine have used a variety of functional endpoints in many different cell types. From this work, it has become apparent that nicotine binds to multiple receptors and activates several highly central signal transduction pathways. As a result, nicotine exerts diverse cell-type specific effects. To further complicate the picture, nicotine is converted, during the production of cigarettes and chewing tobacco, to two highly mutagenic nitrosamines, N′-Nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), and is metabolized in vivo to cotinine. These chemical derivatives also exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activity as compared to the parent compound.

The wikipedia article for nicotine says nicotine by itself is not addictive (or not nearly so much as tobacco). It's the natural MAOIs in tobacco in conjunction with the nicotine that makes them so addictive. Until e-cig manufactures start including those same MAOIs in the e-liquid e-cigs aren't going to be as addictive or pleasurable as tobacco.

And the FDA has expressed concern children will use them and become addicted to nicotine.

Yeah, we better let them light up the real thing then. 8(

Nicotine in itself is harmful to the human body, although tobacco itself is much more harmful.

I've been using the e-cig since November 2011. I haven't smoked a single cigarette since then. I love my e-cig, especially all the wonderful flavors I get. I really don't miss smoking. Most people seem to prefer cigarettes though. It may be that I'm just used to it at this point. Either way, I like the e-cig and I'm going to die eventually whether I use it or cigarettes or nothing at all...

I switched over about 8 months ago, painlessly, after a 19 yr pack a day habit. I find them much more pleasurable than cigarettes, in that the juice I mix up is about 2.5 times "stronger" than a classic cig, delivering a whopping dose, and I suck on the thing like a crack pipe. I used to smoke a cig every 45 mins or so, now I take a few puffs every 5 minutes, for better or for worse. I don't think the harmalas present in cigs are enough to do much if anything (see recent discussion in ADD), and my lungs have thanked me profusely. Good stuff. And you can "smoke" in stores and get dirty looks, (always a good thing to offend the sensibilities of the general public ;)) as well as inside. Wake up in the middle of the night, take a deep puff, and let that downstream D2 (?1) quell my persistently restless legs enough to go back to sleep. Great device. Curious about long term effects, but subjectively these feel much easier on my body. I have got a device I modified, can vary the voltage, and it looks like a beast. No complaints.

But I completely understand "they are retarded cuz of the kids outside the mall" argument the eloquent gentleman expressed above. (?!)

I dropped a 20 year, 1.5 pk/day habit in 3 days. I love my e cig. I've also dropped nicotine levels of the juice from 24mg/ml to 6mg/ml. Things work, bottom line

yeah, an e-cigarette helped me kick my habit too. i used it for a few weeks and then kicked the nicotine alltogether. haven't smoked a cigarette in almost two months. i mean it still isn't easy not to smoke, but in my opinion it helped very much. also it's good to know, if i relapse i can always go back to the e-cig, that thought calms me down if the cravings for a real cigarette come back.

imo these things are great and every smoker who wants to quit but doesn't make it, should look into it. even if you don't kick the e-cig, you at least don't fuck your lungs anymore...

^exactly, and you get to choose the concentration, so it can be very potent or very mild. I'm sure it saves money in the long run however I don't spend money on either so other people would have to say.

There are versions that work with wax/butane oil. I've been using it over at a friends place getting my face ripped off. I don't remember what exactly it is called, so cant tell you the brand.

Thanks for the congrats. It was super easy for me, though, and I had tried EVERYTHING else. Gums, patches, the nightmare that was my chantix experience lol.

Cigs are $10 a pack here in NY. I spend 30 a month on "juice" and 20 on refillable cartridges. Every 6 months or so I gotta drop 60 for two new batteries. So 60 a month, compared to over 400 with cigs. And my lungs feel way beter. It did NOT stop me from gaining 30lbs when I quit, but the extra weight is probably better than inhailing combusted tobacco and chemicals. I'm happy they aren't approved for cessation yet, though. How long would it take Big Pharm and Tobacco to get in on the action and ruin a good thing?

It's certainly better than inhaling smoked tobacco. You can also lose the weight by working hard at that later in time as well, by exercising and eating well. :)
