My pain doc tells me that DXM cough syrup can help to potentiate the effects of opiates and can also help to prevent tolerance to opiates. He tells me that DXM is chemically related to Ketamine, which he uses for the same two purposes in his practice.
I did reply to the post re: using Ketamine to prevent opiate tolerance. That post got me thinking about DXM. My pain doc's Ketamine treatments are very expensive, so I haven't done any yet.
My pain doc recommended that I take about 3 tablespoons per day of Delsym cough syrup. Is this safe? What are the potential side effects? Will it make me feel "weird" or "disassociated"?
I'd have to buy the Delsym over the counter, without a prescription. I'm pretty embarrassed to go to the drugstore and stock up on several bottles of Delsym cough syrup! I'm not sure if there's a limit here in California, but I do know that some people abuse the syrup. It's embarrassing enough to have to get large quantities of opiates from the drugstore (by prescription). If I start stocking up on Delsym syrup, I'm really afraid that they'll think I'm a junkie who is misusing the syrup. Also, lots of syrup gets pretty expensive.
