DXM - the minty smell of success, or not?

I just finished my extraction of DXM from a couple of bottles of Demefan and one Robitussin. Right now I have in front of me what should be DXM freebase, pure white crystals, which, surprisingly have a minty smell. And taste. My question is : Is this really DXM freebase or did I mess something up? If it is, why the hell does it have a minty smell/taste?
 
IDK how relevant this is, but my Mucinex DM pills (30mg DXM/600 Guiaf.) have a minty smell to them. Just an observation...
 
I've never extracted DXM from commercial syrups myself, but I would imagine some of those syrups might contain menthol for flavoring as well? Perhaps some flavoring agent got extracted as well, although if it's forming crystals of a consistent color it seems less likely that there's a ton of some 'contaminant' changing the taste and smell.
 
I had always assumed that the invigorating menthol aroma enigmatically emanating from my syrup-extracted DXM was a persistent residue of the menthol in the syrup...

But upon acquiring a sample of some mystical hydrobromide, I was astonished the discover the exact same cool menthol blast!

My supply of HBr was exhausted aeons ago, and I am still somewhat incredulous that pure DXM should smell of menthol... the icy, penetrating scent being most suggestive of Dexter's frostbitten residence @ Absolute Zero... :|


Can anyone else who has worked with the HBr confirm the presence of this hypothermic perfume? Or have I simply gone off the deep end?! :D<3
 
i will be getting some dxm hbr soon but it seems extremely cheap, how much do u need for a good trip with hbr is it less potent weight for weight to any other forms of dxm?

i will let u no if it smells of menthol when i get it
 
coombesy - HBr is the standard salt form of DXM in most OTC medicines. It's not very expensive even in OTC, by-the-capsule form, and like most things it's even cheaper if you buy it in bulk.

BTW, fun fact: because of DXM's use as a cough suppressant, and the fact that it was in the process of replacing low dose codeine as the OTC cough suppressant of choice when the Controlled Substances Act was passed, it is explicitly exempted from scheduling, meaning Congress would have to amend the legislation to allow it to be scheduled in the future. It's not only unscheduled, it's explicitly clarified that, for the past 40 years, the federal government has not seriously entertained the notion of scheduling it. That's probably another reason it's so cheap compared to many RCs - there's no risk of it being considered an analog, no need to pretend it's not for consumption, etc. as it's an approved, unscheduled OTC med.
 
i will be ordering some pure dextromethorphan hbr powder from the internet
what is the best way to consume this?
im thinking just put it into gelcaps and swallow? anyone plugged pure dxm, is this better?

just found a supplier of dextomethorphan, not the hbr the pics of the chemical structure look diffrent, is the pure dxm and not the dxm hbr more potent in any way? or are the basicly the same stuff,
prices arent too far off eachother

^ To answer your first question, the best way to consume pure DXM HBr is to split your dose into ~6 capsules and take one every ~10 minutes... consuming them all over the course of about an hour.

Taking a full dose of pure DXM HBr all at once seems to result in a much more hectic, chaotic, and confusing experience for many people... apparently because of a less desirable absorption rate...

DXM has teeth, very sharp ones too, so please tread with caution and respect...
