DXM + running...any risks?

Here. Now.
I use DXM on a pretty frequent basis, usually at 350-450 mg, and I also enjoy distance running-usually 4 to 5 miles. This dosage puts me at a comfortable second plateau. I am aware that DXM raises my blood pressure slightly, but my pulse stays around 90 bpm during peak effects and I generally postpone my runs until after the peak/towards the comedown. I wanted to get people's opinions on running/exercising 6 hours after dosing the aforementioned dose of DXM. I don't experience negative effects that I'm conscious of, the anesthetic and dopaminergic/serotenergic effects help with stamina as well. Could I be damaging my heart or circulatory system by this practice? Any input would be appreciated.

As long as your heart-rate doesn't go above what is considered healthy for cardiovascular exercise, I don't see why it would do any damage. However, when I do cardio while on psychoactive drugs, I tend to get wicked headaches. As for what other damage it might do (doubtful, but still a possibility), I have no idea.

Since DXM is known to cause tachycardia, it is not wise to do strenuous physical activity, since you run the risk of a myocardial infarction. Additionally, you run the risk of damaging your knees, hips, or ankles, since DXM is an analgesic and while running your body is flooded with endorphins already, you could possibly pull a muscle or tendon and not be aware of it until after you are done running.

If I dosed in the morning and ran at night I think I'd be safe, any opinions? Does anyone have experience with opiates and running? I appreciate the input guys, more opinions and experiences are welcome!

So I was just recovering from a pretty huge dose of mxe up my arse, holed and all still feeling very much MXE'd and was forced to run 300m for a family relay night. It was the quickest high -> zero possible. I'm talking about roborun to absolutely stone cold sober in the space of about 39 seconds. It was an entire extraordinary experience in itself, I actually really enjoyed the run as well.

But yeah I'm telling you now it may well be a massive waste.

DXM is not an opiate. It's a dissociative SNRI drug. It's the wrong "handedness" - i.e. it's the mirror image of a "good" opiate, and so doesn't bind to mu-opioid receptors very well. (and DXM does not produce typical opioid effects anyway)

Mild to moderate physical activity is fine at low doses.
Running on low doses of dex is going to be fine for you if you have a relatively healthy cardiovascular system. At low doses DXM is mostly a SNRI with a mild alcohol like buzz; so it's not really much different from running around on an antidepressant, while being drunk. Running on higher doses is ... unadvisable, because you'll look obviously fucked up, and you can trip and fall quite easily. (You won't want to run around on high doses anyway.)

The real important thing is: don't push yourself too much. As Apostacious points out, using analgesics (even alcohol) can cause you to injure yourself and not feel it (or think you can "walk it off" etc).

As sekio and Apostacious have stated, the main danger here is that if you overstress yourself on DXM, it won't hurt until it's far too late. So try to pay extra attention to your energy level, balance, etc -- and don't push yourself.

Also, the stimulating/focusing effects of exercise might cut into your dissociation.

You have to be careful not to exert too much while on dissasociatives. Once when I was doing mxe all day I had to go about 7 blocks or so to meet up with some friends to trade them pills for bud and of coarse since I was pretty high it was taking me a while to leave the house and one of my friends called me telling me to hurry up shortly after I left because he had to leave soon. I then ran the rest of the way there When I got there I was standing out front talking with them for a bit and I all of a sudden started getting light headed. I almost fell onto the concrete but luckly one of my friends caught me. I came very close to fainting.

Allright, good deal. Sekio thanks for the input you always have great posts and information. Thanks to all in fact, I've really been wondering about this lately. I actually know that DXM isn't an opiate, I just don't state myself very clearly. I used to use a lot of poppy seed tea and still like to from time to time, I was curious about how opiates would affect a run physiologically since they slow heart rate and all-I would get good euphoric and analgesic effects as well as stimulation from the thebaine-y compounds I suppose. Atara, its interesting you say that b/c I don't feel the dissociation as strongly during my runs, the music euphoria is still strong though and when I got back from my run last night I was having quite a few lilliputian hallucinations that don't occur during running. I try not to overexert myself, though and find DXM helps with knee pain I have sometimes. I would really like to try MXE, I haven't gotten the chance to yet.

Running on the DXM afterglow used to streamline my clunky gait.

Running on MXE has been plain awesome, though it's easy to dehydrate and become uncomfortably aware of the irritated renal system.
