I recently took a long break from DXM, and returned to it a couple days ago, taking a dose of 200 mg. as it started kicking in, i got really hot and had patches of red on me. It reminded me of other times where I had gotten bad rashes tripping hard. Needless to say, that's rather annoying during a hard trip.
What do you all do to help with that? Benadryl is alright, but it knocks me out and I sleep for hours.

Thanks

This happens to me when I take long breaks from dxm as well. I usually just take a half a benadryl tablet and take a nice shower, then use witch hazel after I get out. Just rub it everywhere and sit down and enjoy your euphoriant. ;)

Copied from WW's DXM FAQ:

6.1.3 Mild Allergic Reactions and Histamine Release

Category: Frequent
See Also: The Itch

Ah, the "Robo Itch". Some people get it and some don't. There's evidence that at least some of the cases of Robo Itch are a psychological reaction to mild anesthesia, but many are probably a result of histamine release - not necessarily an allergic reaction per se, but a possible consequence of DXM's pharmacology. The itching tends to go away, and although scratching is pleasurable (and a loofah is wonderful), take care not to overdo it.

Actual allergic reactions have occurred, and often these are a result of the "inert" ingredients, usually one of the dyes (e.g., tartrazine). A topical antihistamine spray might be a good idea. You should always keep an oral antihistamine on-hand, at least during your first few DXM experiences (or when trying out new preparations). Just remember not to use any prescription, non-drowsy antihistamine with DXM. Diphenhydramine (BenadrylTM) is a good OTC antihistamine that is probably safe to combine with DXM (at least it hasn't caused anyone problems yet).

People who have used CoricidinTM tablets have reported that the Robo Itch seems to be completely absent. Be warned, however, that one should not use DXM+antihistamine tablets above the second plateau due to the potential for adverse anticholinergic effects (which if nothing else tend to cause bad trips).

Note that some people find the itching to be unpleasant enough to keep them from trying DXM again, and a few people have scratched themselves raw. Do take care.

I got the same thing years back when I drank me some syrup, pinkcloud. And...

It kind of reminds me of the codeine rash I get from it on the rare occasion

This also. My DXM rash looks quite gross, with many small bumps that almost look like bubbles coming up. Great way to start a trip, eh? 8(

Dextromethorphan is known to cause itching, rashes, fever, and even diarrhea. For a full list of side effects check out Erowid: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/dxm/dxm_effects.shtml. When I used DXM itching was very common, and it was accompanied by red blotches on my skin at high doses.

In all honesty, stay the fuck away from DXM and OTC drugs if you're trying to trip. They don't produce any effects that you can truly be conscious of. OTC drugs used for tripping are bad news in my experience. Whenever I took high doses of DXM I really wasn't able to comprehend what was going on, I became very disaccociated with reality; which is the most common effect you'll receive. If you want a real trip, try LSD. If you don't have access to that, try some legal research chemical tryptamines like 25C-NBOMe. If you're interested in tripping, you're probably better off using research chemicals if you don't have access to mushrooms or acid.

I wouldn't go and randomly recommend NBOMe drugs, they have their own dangers which should be taken very seriously. I agree that there are plenty of OTC drugs that are useless or risky like diphenhydramine, but to just generalize doesn't help. I do not like DXM but there are enough who love it. Then I wouldn't recommend it myself but it would be ignorant of me to disregard all those who like it and consider it a completely worthy drug. If anything DXM is able to produce effects that are strange, extreme and rare and are only found in only a few other drugs like salvia, possibly from sigma agonism. Effects like binocular vision or astral projection. Not that I believe in that, but I believe people experience things that would be called that.

One thing though: I would really watch out with frequent use of DXM. Definitely more harmful physically than mushrooms and LSD. Comparing research chemicals in general with OTCs is apples and oranges, sorry.
