DXM+Prozac=serotonin syndrome

i am just wondering if anybody has ever experienced serotonin syndrome. Before i went to treatment and got clean, i was on Prozac, 60mg a day, and at this time i was using alot of DXM. and the only reason why i was using it ws because the Prozac made it WAY more different than by itself. I had done it a few times before i was on the Prozac, and it was just like a stoned, kind of high. i didn't really like it. Then my psychiatrist put me on Prozac. I didnt know anything about DXM and SSRI interactions. And i found myself in the local Fred Meyers getting a bottle of 12o.z. robitussin. I used to do this and it wasn't like a crazy high or nothing. nothing special. but this time was just a whole new experience. the Prozac made the DXM stronger, last longer, and it made the high alot more intense. i'd drink one 12oz bottle and be super fried for about 24 hours straight. and one time i drank 24oz and i haad to go to the ER and the doc said i was experiencing serotonin syndrome which explains why i felt like i was invincible, had super flexibility, couldn't sleep for the full 24 hours (i'd be up all night listening to weird trippy psy-trance techno frying all night), hallucinations, rapid heart rate, fear of death, stiff muscles, walking like a robot, and my knees shaking like crazy. i'm just wondering if anyone out there had experienced this. i dont know anybody who has had this happen.

DXM with an antidepressants is bad. Im glad your ok. SS can be fatal. What did they give you in the ER? a Seratonin antagonist? 60mg of prozac is quite a high dose. I used to be on 20mg and I thought that was high.

When I was younger I was on prozac, and stupid enough to take DXM on multiple occasions. It was a very unpleasant experience. Besides vomiting "discharge", the high would last a good 16 hours and 200mg felt like 700mg.

I am not (and have never been) on antidepressants but your experience with DXM while on Prozac actually sounds EXACTLY like my experiences with DXM.

You see, there is more than just possible seratonin syndrome that was influencing the effect of the drug. The effects of DXM are partially from DXM itself and partially from DXO, a prodrug of DXM that is converted in the liver. The effects of DXM are generally considered less intoxicating but more stimulating and psychomimetic (meaning psychosis-like). DXO is responsible for the sedation and disassociating effects.

The liver enzyme that converts DXM -> DXO is CYP2D6. Some people lack this liver enzyme (me) which explains why my trips were different than usual. I would stay up for days at a time when I used DXM and would experience muscle spasms, heartrate increase, tremors of the jaw, etc. It was a very strange high and one that I was never sure I liked very much but kept on doing for a long time

The reason why the antidepressant changed the high for you so much was because Prozac is likely metabolized by CYP2D6 just like DXM is so the liver enzyme would not work as well and little of the DXM would be converted into DXO. The effects you were feeling were from JUST the DXM alone. It also is metabolized by other liver enzymes much slower resulting in effects lasting 24 hours rather than 6 - 8 hours.

It's interesting to me that we were both experiencing the same high because I have not talked with very many people who noted similiarities in the high, most people get the tiredness and disassociation not the bizarre effects that we got.

they actually didnt even give me anything because they said it was too late because the drug was already absorbed. they just kept watch over me. i'm not sure why they didnt give me anything though.

yeah that's interesting. but for some reason i always loved that high. it made me feel like nothing could hurt me and i was all powerful. but the hallucinations were sometimes like flying swirls of bright colors, sometimes my wall would look like it was moving further away from me, and one time that scared me was when my room got dark and the face of an old man appeared out of the darkness and was saying something to me. i dont know what but it was weird. and i later kinda thought to myself, maybe this was my guardian angel or something, giving advice, because the face looked like a really wise person. it felt like he was just really wise and was watching out for me.
but yeah i would drink only one bottle and just be fried for like a full day. when it would start to kick in my mouth would get numb and my body would get tingly, and walking was hard to do and felt weird. but for some reason i really like it. i used to get in fights while on it because i thought it made me stronger and invincible. lol.

I was on Lexapro, and took some delsym (which i extracted) and its was two 5oz bottles for a grand total of 1600mg of dxm, but i would say it feels like 1000mg because of the poli in the delsym. I knew i had SS, and it sucked. i couldn't stay still. i had weird mussel spasms where i couldn't control my hands, it felt like my hands were knotting up. I was of course freaking out a little but with all the delsym in me. and unable to move my mouth to talk. because of how bad the SS was. And when the tripping stop all there was is SS. and WEED bring SS right back. IMO. it felt like if ii smoke i couldn't stop moving and i got the spams again... SS is VERY scary, so be careful.

Hey rj55555. I'm on Lexapro 10 mg and I wanta tripp, can't get my hands on shrooms or acid, figured I'd try a bottle of robo. Then I found out possibility of SS. Any idea of how much to take to trip without SS ?

thefalloftyler: maybe you should just try salvia. it doesn't last as long, and I don't like it personally, but it seems safer and I know a lot of people that dig it

Thefalloftyler, I'm not sure if there's a SS dosage threshhold, but I'd suggest staying below the third plateau. I'm on 20mgs of Cipralex daily and 750 mgs gave me SS like symptoms and the worst trip of my life. Depending on your weight, if you're not tiny or massive I'd suggest staying below 600 mgs.

Don't even shoot for second plateau. If you're going to go through this bad idea at all, go for 1st plateau.
