DXM hbr vs DXM (freebase?)

Does anyone know the difference in absorption and effects of dxm with out the hydrobromic acid?
 
I think the non hbr form takes much longer to work or something like that. I know that most everybody(if not everybody) abusing DXM wants DXM hbr.
