DXM and possible other interaction- Serotonin Syndrome?

Last Friday, a few friends and I decided to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A few of them decided to drink that night, but I wasn't feeling that. There had been a shortage of bud for the past couple weeks as well, so I was all out. It was, however, a Friday night and at that point, I was determined to get altered in some way.

So, DXM it was.

I've had very limited experience with DXM. Before this, I had only done it twice, both times with very minimal effects. I would say I've never been past a first plateau experience, and was not trying to trip very hard tonight. In the past, I would drink one 4 oz. bottle of Adult Robitussin, which only has DXM HBr as the active ingredient. I didn't want to trip too hard that night, but I did want to explore the effects of the drug a little more fully, so I decided to go with one and half bottles. Fortunately for me, I only managed to down one bottle, forgetting about the other half that I had planned on taking. This brought my total dose to 354 mg of DXM, the same amount I had taken my previous two times.

The night started off well, just enjoying the movie with my friends, a few of which were quite drunk, and the rest were sober. I was enjoying myself, and felt the familiar effects of the DXM: slightly impaired motor ability, trippy thoughts and a strange body buzz.

As the night progressed, however, I began to feel more and more impaired and fucked up. By the time The Two Towers had finished, I decided I had been up long enough and went to bed. At this point, it was becoming difficult to walk, I was very shaky and my words were becoming slurred. This was about 3 hours after I finished drinking the DXM, so I thought that it was somewhat strange, but figured I would sleep it off and be fine.

Wrong!

I woke up about an hour and half later and could hardly move my arms or legs. My heart was racing, and my breathing was labored. I sat up in bed and my whole body was tense and contorted in a very strange way. I stumbled out of bed and went downstairs to get a glass of water. Everything looked very distorted and I was having trouble holding the glass in my hands. I tried to calm myself down and got on my computer to look up what could have possibly caused these horrible effects.

I had read a little bit about serotonin syndrome and was somewhat familiar with its effects, so that is what I researched first. I determined my condition to be caused by the adderall that I had taken the day before, approximately 36 hours before ingesting the DXM. I had rolled about two weeks before this, but figured that would not still be in the mix of substances affecting my chemical balances.

After waking up my room mate and returning to the basement, I was more comfortable and resisted my urge to call 911. My pupils at this point were huge, heart rate was off the chart, breathing still labored, muscles tensing and twitching randomly, nausea and upset stomach settling in and my mind felt as if it were 3 feet above my head (if that makes sense... sort of like a really panicked feeling).

After about 3 hours, the majority of the symptoms had subsided and I was left with a headache, upset stomach and pupils that couldn't decide whether they wanted to be pinpoints or saucers. The pupil dilation/contraction continued for another day or so, and I felt out of my head for the rest of the weekend. By Monday, all of the residual effects were gone.

So, bluelight, do any of you know an alternate explanation for what I experienced? It seemed strange that such small amounts of both substances (Adderall 20 mg and 354 mg DXM) spaced out over 36 hours could cause the dreaded serotonin syndrome, but it is the explanation that makes the most sense to me considering my symptoms. Has anyone had similar experiences with this combo?

Thank you for taking the time to read/respond!

Yikes. That sucks, First off, you tried to go to sleep at T = 3h, which was in the middle of the trip. I'm amazed you even fell alseep.

As for the cause of your problems, I dunno.

That sounds alot like the regular effects i get from dxm. Just fucks me right up. Very sloppy movement, vision distorted, slurred speech, but mind relativily clear. Kinda weird to be that fucked up an still thinking logically, triggers panic for me sometimes since my body is so uncontrollable and my mind is still thinking logically. Atleast when I'm drunk my mind is fucked up with my body so yeah I can't talk or move, but I just think fuck it and fall down and pass out. Maybe your body was just fucked up and triggered you to start freakin out a bit thinking something was going bad. I don't really think rolling a few weeks ago you affect it, and I don't really think amphetamine does too much with serotonin. I could be wrong on that. And as for the dosage think I've had the same shit happen, and I have no idea why. 400 mg has given of a very small buzz sometimes, and other I got straight fucked off the same dose.

Yea, I also think you were just unlucky enough to wake up pretty fucked up, became horribly disoriented and panicked. You mention being surprised that it was hard to walk and talk at 3 hours, but as someone else said, that's really just getting into the peak on DXM - and both of those are pretty standard symptoms. The symptoms you described upon waking up are also relatively standard. Definitely don't think it was serotonin syndrome - seems much more likely it was just a different/stronger trip than you'd expected combined with a panic attack (which suck :\). Don't know what to say about the irregular pupil dilation the day afterward though - it's possible you were just looking for symptoms and so found them, if you get what I mean. I mean pupils change size all the time normally, maybe you were just checking them often and expecting something to be wrong and so that's what you saw. Feeling groggy/slightly out of it the day after a DXM dose isn't that uncommon.

There is dextroamphetamine in the Adderal you took and there is Dextromethorphan (obviously) in the Robotussin you took, I don't think that you suffered from serotonin Syndrome, but maybe just a negative interaction between the dextroamphetamine in the adderal and the DXM in the robotussin, there are a lot more shit in Robotussin, including: guaifenesin, phenylephrine. So those could have had a interaction with the stuff in adderal, but im pretty sure it was the dextroamphetamine in the Adderal and the DXM in Robo. because Central nervous system stimulants, particularly the amphetamines, can potentiate the adrenergic response to pressor agents. CNS stimulants often have peripheral sympathetic activity and can increase blood pressure and heart rate.

Hoped I helped
