I'm thinking advanced drug discussion?? Mods do your magic...

I very much enjoy cocaine and other drugs that all share one quality... they all effect dopamine levels in the brain either by reuptake inhibition or by reverse transport.

I have recently discovered that I very much enjoy mid level trips on DXM. I believe that the reason I like dextromethorphan so much is in part due to the fact that it increases the levels of dopamine in the brain.

Quoted from wikipedia:
"DX and DXM also have the indirect effect of raising dopamine levels in the brain, which will have an antidepressant/euphoric effect even at relatively low recreational doses. The dopamine response is likely the cause of most of the low-dose recreational effects, since those effects generally consist of euphoria more than hallucination or dissociation."

Any ideas or information would prove helpful as well as explaining how DXM interacts with dopamine receptors and or neurotransmitters. Thanks guys.

Shifting to ADD as per user request... ADD mods if there is a more specific forum, or a better place for this thread, move as you see fit :)

CB :)

As someone who's ingested more DXM than anyone I know(yes, i am ashamed) i would say that it boosts levels of serotonin more than dopamine. this is totally unscientiffic, i'm aware, but based on my first hand experiences, and they are many, i'd say that aside from melting away existence, DXM is good for raising both serotonin and dopamine levels. that and causing extreme confusion.

Could the OP please find a more academic source for the claim of DXM and dopamine?
This might be more scientific for you... Link
Also this journal entry is quite interesting too... Link

This seems to answer what I have speculated for some time. DXM feels like it releases more serotonin than dopamine to me and I can feel the difference. My question is then is it normal for someone with an affinity for excess dopamine in the brain to enjoy those drugs much more than the ones that increase serotonin? I thought they both were definitely chemicals that were big parts of the reward centers, it seems strange to me that someone might enjoy one over the other.

An increase in 5-HT levels by itself isn't very fun at all.
NE and DA increases are, though. Moreso DA.

Ahh, a man after my own heart... dopamine rules.

I should give DXM a try sometime, although I'm not a fan of psychedelics or anything related. Maybe watching dosage carefully would be enough.

There should be more info about this out there, or available through search... I don't know much meself, never having been involved with DXM. Try the Google Scholar site (http://scholar.google.com) or Pubmed.

P.S. beware the serotonin elfs... being an E-related board, they're all over the place around here & sometimes frown on dopamine demons like us. Individually they're nothing, but in numbers it's like a wasp attack ;).

That wikipedia entery is a load of hoey.

The evidence is quite clear that dextromethorphan does not increase dopamine release in the brain (Specifically nucleus accumbens and then rest of the striatum)[1, 2, 3]. Indeed it decreases dopamine release induced by morphine. This has been shown in anesthetized and non anesthetized animals.

Not surprising seeing as DXM is an antagonist of an excitatory receptor.

Why is it that DXM or other dissociatives are helpful in dealing with methamp. withdrawl/cessation?

because ur so high u cant fiend..lol when i am in the k hole or right fucked on dxm i can hardly walk, how could i fiend? And maybe since ur so disconnected from yourself physicaly and mentally while high on dissociatives it even takes u away from that state of mind.

DXM has been shown to re-polarize the neurotransmitters of both dopamine and serotonin. Almost as if adding more "life" into decaying synaptic pathways .. its not neccesarily a good thing though. For people on meth/amp ... DXM may serve (for many weeks actually) as an amphetamine potientiator.

Sorry for not being clearer. I know getting fucked up takes care of fiending; but I have heard about positive results from sub-recreational dosages.
