I took 1-2g of tryptophan for a week for anxiety. It was somewhat helpful but not enough to justify using it. so I quit about 48 hours ago. can I take 30mg of DXM for a cold? not any recreational dose. I hate the stuff.

Yes, L-tryp is present in the diet anyway. The rate limiting step is hydroxylation to 5htp; increasing dietary tryptophan intake won't raise serotonin levels unless you are already tryptophan-deficient.

awesome. ty man you are the shit as always. ya I drink a lot of milk and other foods with tryptophan just naturally. hey I have a question. I just bought some 500mg chelated mg glutamate pills and it says 27mg gets absorbed. what is the best method of absorption via supplements and how much does one get from dietery foods (legumes, nuts etc.). I can figure out how stable it is under heat but I could never figure out how much MG gets absorbed when one eats high, uncooked mg foods.

Mg as organic "chelated" salts (glycinate, glutamate, basically every amino acid, citrate etc) is extensively absorbed; however some fraction of the dose you take of a chelated Mg supplement is the chelating compound itself. Mg as oxide, carbonate or hydroxide is poorly absorbed.

I would imagine most magnesium in plants would be as some sort of chelate (either with phytate, bound to protiens, or some sort of amino acids), and would be well-asborbed.

The combination can cause in rare cases a serotonin syndrome, also after one use.

Be carefull if you have astma, difficulty breathing or when you have liver problems with DXM.
