DXM 60mg 2-day nightmare -- why did this happen?

I used to overdose frequently on DXM. Over the course of three months or so two years ago I on perhaps 25 occasions took 300mg to 1g each time in the form of Robitussin or Delsym liquid or liquigels. I quit after a profusion of itchy sores erupted all over my arms and legs following a dose. Even today my flesh bears light scarring from those sores, which took months to fully heal.

A couple of days ago I took 60mg DXM in the form of a single Mucinex tablet, which also contained 1200mg guafinessin. I chewed it up because the tablet was an extended release formulation, and I did not want to wait for effects to kick in. Specifically, I was chasing the DXM afterglow, hoping that a light dose would give me a mild form of one for a day or so.

What has followed has been about 48 hours of a pounding in my head, hot flashes, difficulty catching my breath, restlessness, hollowed-out looking eyes, and dizziness. These symptoms pale next to the most discomfitting symptom, which has been an aching in my chest, substantially elevated heart rate, and frequent palpitations. I'm thinking I may have subjected myself to a mild form of serotonin syndrome. Anybody have any ideas as to what's been going on in my body?

I can tell you one thing, i fricking inject heroin and Oxy IR every single day, and i consider what you are doing far more dangerous than what i do.

I would have to say that you definitely are having a reaction to DXM or some other ingredient in the pills.

I would seek medical attention immediately and be very upfront with the doctor about what youve done. what you have described is not something you should take lightly. maybe you should go to a doctor who doesnt know you if you wouldnt want to admit abusing cold meds to your primary care doc.

Are you taking any SSRI's, 5-htp or MAOI's? Also, did you do any recreational drugs the days beforehand?

I would seriously recommend that you go see a doctor if you are having that sort of reaction for that long. im not saying its serious, but the time for asking questions on bluelight is past. go to the doctor

I'm a lot better now. I realized after posting that the two Flexeril pills I had taken earlier that day had probably contributed. Flexeril has quite a long half-life, and the extended release coating of the Mucinex probably contributed as well. Everything is pretty much back to normal now, though I feel a little feverish and my head is still pounding a bit. However, today I took an Adderall (couldn't be helped; needed to for class) so that's probably why.

What I know now is that messing around with so much barely-recreational crap at once is incredibly stupid. I wouldn't consider 60mg of DXM to constitute abuse, but taking it on top of Flexeril was thoughtless and dangerous.

Im glad you feel better, still might want to follow up with a doc sometime though. its good you learned something about the barely recreational thing you said. that shit is wack. much better, not to mention safer, substances to get high on.
