The famous cannabis-selling coffee shops of the Netherlands are facing new tighter restrictions.

The Dutch government is reclassifying high-strength cannabis to put it in the same category as hard drugs.

It says the amount of the main active chemical in the drug, THC, has gone up, making it far more potent than a generation ago.

It means the coffee shops will be forced to take the popular, high-strength varieties off their shelves.

Dutch politicians say high-strength cannabis, known as "skunk", is more dangerous than it was before.

In the future, anything containing more than 15% THC will be treated the same way as hard drugs, such as cocaine and ecstasy.

The move is a big blow to the coffee shops - and means they will have to replace about 80% of their stock with weaker varieties.

Marc Josemans, who runs a cafe in Maastricht, says he believes that the new tough approach is being driven by the increasingly influential far-right in Dutch politics.

"You immediately can taste the difference. Everything which is considered unusual for them - they call it 'left hobbies' and under this name they want to ban all 'left hobbies', like using cannabis," he said

The move means that the Netherlands' traditional tolerance of soft drugs is to become a thing of the past.

The ban on the high-strength "skunk" is expected to be introduced next year, when police will start doing random checks in the cafes.

From next year, the Dutch government also plans to ban tourists from entering coffee shops across the country.

made me really sad to read this :/

Absolutely pathetic, more EU politics forced upon the poor dutch nation.

So what about the regular smokers who have gotten used to smoking the good stuff? Will they have to resort to street deals and risking arrest just to make some greedy judges and lawyer's a little more rich, and then get sent to prison to help finance that too?

I wonder who is going to make money off the back of this, producing skunk to sell on the streets. Personally, I'd look towards someone high in government for that answer.

What. The. Fuck?

Are people suppose to field test the quality of their marijuana to determine it's exact potency?

all i can say is this will never happen, mark my words, just another bit of EU pressure. The dutch dont want to change their laws, even if the christian democrats do

Yeah...this makes no sense whatsover. More pot will have to be smoked to get "essentially" the same effect. Basically, this just wastes peoples time cause now they will have to spend more time smoking to get high.

kinda defeats the purpose. are the cops going to be making the rounds with a jewelers loupe doing trich checks? wait a minute! there are too many crystals on this bud! youre under arrest! plus forcing ppl to smoke weaker bud is forcing ppl to smoke more plant material which is the detriment to pot smoking, you want to get the desired effect from smoking the smallest amount of material possible. maybe thats just me.

Im sorry but how is having more THC dangerous? Where has there been ANY scientific evidence that says THC is dangerous at all?

The amount of THC can vary within different buds on the same plant.
So someone is going to have to test each bud - and each portion of each bud - to make sure than none of it exceeds 15%.

Because, after all, we all know that smoking weed with 14% THC is a completely different experience than smoking weed with 16%. :|

im intrested as to where they got the 15% from.
it appears like its just a random number choosen with no real scinintific basis for the "harm reduction" value of it

^ my question exactly...and how are they going to address edibles?

If an edible can't be made from marijuana with 15+ %THC then they will just have to use more marijuana per batch to reach the same strength.

This made me laugh! First of all, most of the edibles in Amsterdam are super weak anyway (in my experiences). But I've made brownies with straight up dirt weed that ended up being SUPER potent. Almost 2 grams per brownie, and the extraction I used to get the THC out was very efficient. If the Dutch ever did try to enforce this RIDICULOUS rule, we would probably see a sharp rise in potent edibles (that have the potential to fuck people up waayyy more than a few puffs off a good spliff).

wait, next year they want to ban tourists from entering coffe shops? economic suicide. see how well that works out when you cut off the life blood for your entire economy.

Dutch don't need cannabis and prostitution tourists to be wealthy. It's just the icing on the cake. But they love so much their cake that they won't ban this sort of tourism.

Ofc they do not expect you to.

They'll just use such law the same way laws like "disturbing the peace" are used in the U.S.A. Do give cops more authority to pluck people up for baseless reasons and to counter citizens' rights.
