Police in Amsterdam are complaining over new rules banning them from smoking cannabis while off duty.

Officers in the Dutch capital, famous for its liberal drugs laws, have been told they must set the public "a good moral example".

The ban, due to come into effect on January 1, will make the force the first in the Netherlands to bar officers from using drugs when not at work.

Frank Gittay, the city's police council chairman, said: "Until now police were only banned from showing up for work stoned or drunk.

"But now we are telling officers they should also behave like the police at all times.

"That means not taking drugs and not getting excessively drunk whether on or off duty."

But Dutch police union chairman Hans van Duijn said: "Many of our members are opposed to this.

"They are not paid for 24-hours a day. What they do in their free time is up to them."

so would you say that smoking pot every night would have zero effect on your performance at work during the day? Or that yeah, it may have a little effect, but you should be judged by how you perform at work, and just not be high while you're there?

think about it a lot of us companies already do this. they reserve the right to test you for drugs at 24 hours notice when THC stays in your system much longer than that. So you can get fired tomorrow for the pot you smoked two weeks ago keep that in mind.

Yea, and I'm against all that bullshit.

I would never want a job that drug tests me.
So what, I use drugs. I still do my job. Does it effect my efficiency, maybe, maybe not, but in the end, I still get the job done. That's all that matters to me.

Tiesto - I almost universally agree with that, but I tend to hesitate a little bit in certain areas. I found this article interesting because I was really torn on it. On the one hand I hate to see further and further evidence of amsterdam 'cracking down' on pot, but on the other hand I feel there's certain professions where drugs, such as pot, that stay in the system too long, maybe shouldn't be allowed. For instance, if you think it's cool for cops, okay. What about firemen? Then what about ambulance drivers? Heart surgeons? How about an airplane pilot who only flies the biggest of the jumbo jets with countless lives in his hands?

It's hard because I can think of situations where I wouldn't want that person who is in such a position of responsibility to have been stoned out of his mind the night before, yet at the same time it sucks telling people what they can / cannot do in their spare time when they're not on the job.

I like how they ban pot use outright, but for alcohol they say to not drink "excessively." Why don't they take the same stance with pot?

Something about police arguing for their right to smoke weed makes me very happy. The time I spent in Amsterdam was wonderful. The police who I came in contact with were nothing but awesome towards me. They seemed so much more laid back than any cops I have encountered anywhere else in the world.

From what I understand you can't even buy mushrooms OTC now in A-Dam anymore. What a shame... Hopefully this doesn't create a police force of people who act like the cops over here in America. These power hungry jerks really do make any encounter with them unpleasant. (for the most part)

Not to be the grammar Nazi, but it's spelled fascist.

If you're a known stoner, you have to be/act smart all the time, or you will be stereotyped!

I completely hate everything you just typed.

Anyway, it does seem the Dutch are headed to a much more conservative idealogy in drug laws. A consistent trend is beginning to develope from this country, and I just hope it doesn't continue.

Yeah, it's too bad the (fachist) U.S. has so much influence on world policy...

It's not the US policy at work in the Netherlands. It's the fact that people have died while on shrooms, etc.

Admittedly the people were stupid, but it's not like the US reached its big arm out and smacked them.

lol All I had to do was read the title on the front page and it put a smile on my face

i kind of agree that police should behave like police at all times. i've read that 25% of policemen were alcoholics or something like that and i don't think that's right. police shouldn't be using alcohol or other drugs off duty if it affects their ability to perform on duty and it inevitably does in many cases. if you choose a job in public safety, i think you have to give up your rights to using drugs, just like i don't have a problem with drug testing pilots. if you want to get high, choose a different career.

When has it ever been a right to take drugs? :\

well some would argue that human beings have a natural right to do what they want with their own bodies. but i believe that you waive that right when you choose a public safety related career.

Fair nuff

But how does Smoking a joint tonight effect your work tomorrow

Paticuly when the country your in allows its citizens the right to smoke it.

I could understand if they where say a doctor on call perhaps that would be an issue (ok a serious issue)

If a cop wants to be a raging alcoholic thats his right

It his job to protect mine Ill protect his too (cops dont make the laws just enforce them)

No i dont have a problem with an alcoholic cop (aslong as hes sober at work n not hungover)
Why
Because the human race is full of fuckups thats just who and what we are

To be arrested by your peers is your right

Last thing I wont is a police force that looks down on everyone (even those doing legal drugs) because they do not
