AMSTERDAM — A man who said he spent two decades collecting Ecstasy pills of all colors and shapes as a hobby has turned to police for help after they were stolen — because he said some of them are poisonous.

Police say the 46-year-old man, who was not identified, decided to report the theft despite the illegal nature of the collection because he was worried about the possible consequences if anybody were to swallow one of the poisoned pills.

It was not immediately clear why about 40 red-and-white pills out of the 2,400-pill-strong collection would be poisoned, but the police said they fear the drugs could be lethal if swallowed.

"That's really the main reason he came to the police," said police spokeswoman Esther Naber, adding the man "knows he's not going to get his collection back."

A report in De Volkskrant daily Thursday said the man claimed he was not a drug dealer or user.

"I've tried it before but didn't like it," the report quoted him saying. "My passion for collecting comes from the varied collection of colors, shapes and logos that are printed on the pills."

According to a police statement, the man gathered the pills over a 20 year period and carefully stored them in coin collecting folders.

The folders were allegedly taken during a break-in Wednesday at the man's home in Eerbeek, 56 miles (90 kilometers) east of Amsterdam.

Police spokesman Naber said investigators tended to believe the man's story.

"Why would you make something like this up?" she said.

Prosecutors and drug enforcement officials are still weighing whether to charge him with a crime.

"Given that the pills have disappeared, for the moment there's no evidence to support a possession charge," Naber said.

The pills' street value is estimated at euro11,000 ($16,200).

It really sucks someone dedicated enough to make a collection like that would have it robbed from him. I assume when they say "poisonous" pills he is meaning they contain potentially lethal adulterants like PMA or something and not that they have been dosed with actual poison. It would of taken balls to walk into the cop shop and tell this story.

...what an amazing place. Imagine walking into a police station in the USA and telling the cops that story.

Jeeze even if you told cops in Canada that...you would for shur get fucking charged if they found it.

OVer 2000 pills? Thats enough to get 1000-2000 kids on ecstasy in their minds.

The fact that the guy came and reported it though and cared enough not for people to get hurt might make the judge punishment much less severe.

Great story :D
I hope they find the person who knicked them though, purely so they don't die.. Yet, on the other hand, they deserve a bit of bad medicine.

maybe he's just bat shit crazy and really peppered his collection with poison pills to make it useless to others =p I mean why are all the 'poison' pills red or white? Sounds like the guy would only have a reason to buy one pill at a time if he was just collecting logos- buying pills one at a time like that, what are the odds of picking up 40 bad apples of only two different colors?

OR~ Maybe this guy had enough trust his his legal system to not charge him for doing the right thing, and knowing he had more red and white pills than any other color, made it all up so the bastards that stole the pills would be too afraid to get anything out of it hehe

i think it is propaganda to get who ever stole them to either dump them (thus keeping them off the blackmarket and out of the mouths of potential kids and party-goers) or to get the thief to turn them in.

MY GOD! this is what i wanted to do hahaha :D

but seriously. 2,400 pills? or 2,400 different kinds of pills... i didnt even know there were that many..

Pictures....

Perhaps he would have been better off taking glossy photos of each one and putting them in a stamp album !

Even better if he could do an analysis on each one and attach....

So if he's gone to the police he must have photographic evidence of this worthy collection ?

That I'd like to see... (Yes, I really would!) .......

I find this story really interesting. I guess it's just the collection I find so interesting. The variety would be amazing! I too would love to see pictures.

I hadn't considered that the bit about some being poison might be bullshit, just to get the thief to turn them in or to keep people from trying them if they get sold. It does make a lot of sense though.

If some are actually deadly, kudos to the guy for bringing this to the cops even at risk to himself!! Here's hoping nobody gets hurt.

Yeah you are exactly right. I highly doubt any of them are poisonous. He just said that to probably get back at the thief and maybe spare his collection, somehow?

Well, he is either a very noble gentleman for preventing any 'poison' onto the markets, or just plain dumb.

If someone stole 2500 ecstasy tablets from yourself, would you go to the police?

Yes, Your Honour! I'd very much like 8 years.... and everything else taken away from me.

No, I am not a US citizen.

But even the Dutch legal system would find this one 'difficult'. Maybe I'm just cynical...
