When the list gets long, it's handy to have some kind of rhyme or reason to it. On the (rare) occasion when I put together such a list, I usually go chronological.

In my freshmen year of college, they gave everybody a handout of alphabetically listed DEA scheduled substances. I took it as a wish list and tried to find some of the more interesting sounding drugs.

Hahaha. I never considered it like that. Rhyme and Reason. It does make it easy to index. SSocko why would they give that list? For foreign students?

Was gonna group them based on their molecular properties (e.g. tryptamines, stimulants, dperessants, etc. but since it's a relatively short list, it's easier going aplhabetical)

Once I have a hoard of drugs in my baggage (more than now), I might group them otherwise.

Also if I decide to make some trip reports and stuff like that, then it might be more reasonable to group them based on their characteristics, for sake of easy reference.

And another thing that I might do, is write the real names of the drugs, and their chemical formula stuff like that. E.g. White heroin (heroin no. 4) - diacetylmorphine/diamorphine [C21H23NO5]. But that is something for much later in my BL career :)

Molecular formulae mean almost nothing with organics. If you want to get more technical, use the IUPAC name :)
