Hey Bluelighters, I was wondering if you could give me any advice. You see, I have a fair amount of Cheratussin that was prescribed to me a while back for coughing. It contains 100 mg gauifenesin and 10 mg of codeine per 5 ml. Now the first thing that most would point out is that gauifenesin sucks, and this syrup is inferior to other, promethazine containing version. However, I have noticed that I can easily stomach gauifenesin with no adverse effects up to about 4 grams, and yes I do maintain proper hydration to prevent the formation of kidney stones. However, the one issue that I have is that the taste of this syrup is utterly horrendous. I mean, sickening beyond belief. The way I see it, I have two viable options.
The first is mixing this syrup with something else, like soda, in order to create a concoction like purple drank, but without the promethazine. However, my one reason for doing this is because I am not sure what to mix the syrup with. From what I've read, opiates are best absorbed after taking something basic like antacids or baking soda. Wouldn't the soda, being acidic, decrease absorption of the codeine? My other option is drying the syrup, but I am not sure if this can be done safely without destroying the codeine. From what I've read, codeine decomposes at around 150 C, while gauifenesin decomposes at around 250 C. However, I was wondering if at sub-boiling or even boiling temperatures any of the other syrup ingredients could decompose or react together in a dangerous manner.
Basically what I am asking is this:
1. Does mixing codeine syrup with soda/juice decrease its absorption?
2. If the above is true, can it be offset by upping the amount of antacids taken?
3. Does drying codeine syrup leave it intact?
Thanks in advance,
