TEMPE, Ariz. – An Arizona State University student who passed out and was left in a wheelchair in a hospital lobby with a Post-it note to tell doctors that he had participated in a drinking competition apparently put back about 20 shots of tequila.

Police are considering citing the student for underage drinking in what is the latest alcohol-related incident to involve ASU students in recent months.

The 19-year-old student was found early Saturday in the emergency room lobby of St. Luke’s Hospital, according to Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Michael Pooley. A sticky note on the student’s body gave his name and said he’d been drinking and needed help. Hospital staff noticed the student and helped him.

The student had passed out and started shaking and turning blue before the student’s fraternity brothers dropped him at the hospital, police said. The fraternity brothers initially tried taking the victim to one of their homes because they were afraid of getting into trouble.

well at least they dropped him off with a post it note lol that was intelligent of them, better than just leaving him in a ditch or something. Why were these kids so afraid of getting in trouble anyway? does anyone really care they were drinking underage? i think it'd be a bit more important to save someone's life and in general the hospital isn't going to call the police. Guess we can't blame prohibition for this one.

20 shots of tequila; light weight.

At least they took him to the hospital along with useful information. They were probably all worried about getting arrested and kicked out of the university because a stupid frat contest.

At my university, if you call the ambo on someone who's been drinking underage, you'll get charged, everyone in the apartment will get charged, the person who needs help will get charged, and the university will find out about it as well where you'll face discliplinary action.

Now it's obviously worth it to get the person help, but they make it really fucking hard. I've known people who have called the ambulance and left the person alone so no one else gets charges. Not cool but at least they tried to get him help I guess.

This is hilarious. Looking at news stories etc it seems like they treat Alcohol as bad as heroin or something over in the US.

When I went with my parents when I was 15 they refused to serve me a beer when having a meal with my parents, and even threatened to call the police lol the fuck

Also 20 shots? pussy

In a 165 lb. male (freshman average weight), 20 shots of tequila in an hour would put his BAC around 5.0. That level is lethal for most of the worlds population. If he is on any other meds (antidepressants, seizure meds, etc.) where alcohol is contraindicated, the problem becomes more complex.

Harm reduction in college fraternities has gotten better, but still is a joke. His buddies had reason to be afraid.

They do not have the education that many of us here do to know the power of what they are ingesting and the risks they are taking. Stupid and ignorant is not a legal defense. The frat brothers deserve whatever consequences come their way. I would not want a nephew, brother, or son, in a fraternity that is going to place its members in danger.

the US is fucked if it's the case you're going to get in trouble for underage drinking if you try to save someone's life. In Canada, things are definitely not like this, well mostly because college (we call it university here) aged kids are over the drinking age for the most part. But even high school kids won't get in trouble for this kind of thing either.

In university they always warned us about parties where they'd make weird concoctions of alcohol/cough medicine and other strange shit, now that's dangerous. But i saw it happen plenty of times.

Best to build up a huge alcohol tolerance before heading to college/university IMO. Every weekend i'd see an ambulance on campus due to someone over indulging in alcohol or some alcohol related accident.

what about that good Samaritan policy stuff? that should apply to underage drinking as well and should be a federal thing. I really want to move to the US one day but things are just fucked there.

I know this kid that stabbed himself in the leg whilst on coke, because he thought it'd be badass not to feel pain. Never the less he was screaming and crying. All his friends did was apply pressure, use a ton of paper towels and taped it with duct tape. Everybody was scared of bringing him to hospital. Been a couple days duct tapes still on, waiting till he gets medical help or gangrene...

^damn that's fucked up, drug users should take a CPR/first aid course and shit; i learned a lot from it and in that case, i'd be legally responsible to put pressure on the wound, bandage him up and drop him off at the hospital or call an ambulance. That's some scary shit, you don't exactly want to lose your leg from stabbing it yourself.

at least get him to change his duct tape bandage for something better, like anything in a first aid kit and get that shit cleaned with alcohol and then head to the ER.

Why doesn't he go to the hospital and not mention the drugs?

"Brother accidentally stabbed me in play fight" kinda bullshit.

In the US, all gunshots and knife wounds are reported to the police and investigated... or are supped to be.

shit you could just say you stabbed yourself while on coke and as long as you don't have a shit load back at your house, they have no evidence you were on coke anyway. In any case, the primary thing to think about is that possibility of a lost limb due to stupidity, regardless of how you have to get help, just get him help FFS.

^ This..

Go to hospital. Make up a reasonable excuse that doesn't involve drugs. It'd be down to any suspicious person to prove your story is a lie.. which will be (next to) impossible.

If asked why it took you so long to seek medical help? "I didn't think it was that bad :\"
