Drugstore Cowboy author arrested over pharmacy robbery - again

By Nick Allen
James Fogle, whose book "Drugstore Cowboy" chronicled a life spent stealing narcotics, has been arrested for allegedly carrying out an armed robbery at a pharmacy.

The 73-year-old, who has spent much of his life in prison, wrote the book while behind bars and it was turned into an acclaimed film starring Matt Dillon in 1989. The work was loosely based on Fogle's life roaming the Pacific Northwest robbing pharmacies to feed his addictions. His latest arrest came after he and another man were accused of raiding a pharmacy near Seattle and tying up its employees. Fogle was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery. Jim Bove, a local police spokesman, told The Seattle Times said: "He's 73 years old and this is probably the only thing he knows."

When the film, directed by Gus Van Sant, came out, Fogle was serving a jail sentence in Washington State Penitentiary. He was released in 1991, but was back behind bars after less than a year. He has faced nearly a dozen criminal charges over the last decade. In 2004, he was found in a drug store after breaking in through the roof and loading $10,000 (£6,000) worth of drugs into paper bags. He had fallen asleep while making his getaway.

LOL, this sounds like something Abe Simpson would do. However, I am sure the real story is that he couldn't wait to get high, and dosed too much while he was working.

I met James Fogle whilst in prison in Washington state. He is the embodiment of The Drugstore Cowboy.......such a larger than life character. Amaaaazing stories, 50 years of pharmaceutical expertise. I sat at his side in the yard daily and lapped up all of the tales he would share, which were in no short supply. One of the most profoundly educational characters I've ever met. Sadly, I was only in the same joint as James for 7 weeks before being transferred.. . I hope he is doing ok, I imagine this will be last stint for him.

Yeah, hes in his 70's & with a rap sheet like he has, he may be in for a while. Any expert advice you would like to pass on to us that you received from him?

Never heard of this....must check out the film tonight actually....was looking for a film to download so this will do. Cheers

I love the film, I have yet to read the book which I have but in English only (wasn't translated in my language, sadly).

Well, moreso just endless entertainment. If you have been incarcerated (be it in jail, prison, rehab, etc) and also have a "habit" I am sure you are aware of the insatiable appetite of most junkies to talk, talk, talk about drugs and share drug stories. This man is a natural story teller and has thousands of tales he loves to share. It was just interesting to hear of the various "formulations" over the years, the ups and downs of the junky population and how to make it, and of course tales of various exploits. He was 68 at the time, and had a well earned reputation inside....he was treated like the royalty he is amongst the inmates. I am from the Pacific Northwest so to hear great dope stories about the towns I grew up was especially entertaining. I wasn't peppering him for burglary advice, not my line, just looking for some good stories:)

Well, I just watched this film for the first time and it was really damn good :) I liked it alot. I've always liked Matt Dillon, but this just cemented my positive opinion on him.
Isn't it funny how watching these kinds of films leave you itching to get high on something?!

Also, how accurate is the film portrayal? Like did he actually believe in the "hat on the bed" thing?

Still, very very good watch and thanks for opening it up to me :) I'd like to read the book next

that's what I figured happened too, he must have dove right into the bottles, really sad

oops started eating xanies b4 he could get out the door.. musta been trying to get his sick of real quick or something.. kinda embarrsing to get that close..

fuck the xan, man! when you got 1000 little earth-shattering dilaudid, i think i'd sit down on the counter siphon several sixteenths into a CC or 2 and put the rest of my sheets to the wind trailing camel smoke. Me and my grains shall sit longingly on the windowsills of my brains. PLEASE LET US ALL LEARN!

He probably got a hold of some Dilaudid K4's and injected them right there and proceeded to nod out.. thats my best guess. Or he was already faded on opiates before making the break-in. lol can you imagine some old man just asleep behind the pharmacy counter?! I wonder what the whole story was, like the details of what he took, was on, and so on...
