Drugs that mimic schizophrenia

The medical term for a drug that mimics the effects of psychosis is psychotomimetic for the record (and to aid in further research). The wikipedia page for this term is unfortunately tiny and that was the extent of research I was willing to do at 2am... it noted that Carl Sagan anonymously referred to marijuana as psychotomimetic and that pentazocine and butorphanol would fit into this category which surprised me (however I don't know very much about those 2 specific opioids).

I don't think crack/meth psychosis is what he is talking about because that isn't a drug mimicking the effect of schizophrenia but ACTUAL psychosis.

Yea I read that article a while ago, wasn't a very detailed source which made me turn here. And how would pentazocine and butorphanol be considered psychotomimetic? Do they produce hallucinations and/or delusions?

To answer this, I guess we need to hear from a member who tried a bunch of psychedelics as a kid, and then developed schizophrenia later as an adult.

I was never diagnosed with schizophrenia, but schizotypal personality disorder, bipolar II, ADD, with thought disorder..i don't believe i have schizophrenia, but it runs in my family so obviously some drugs can bring it out. The only one that has done that is zyprexa (olanzapine), which is an anti-psychotic for schizophrenia.

LSD has helped me immensely to be a more open and productive person. But hey..everyone is different. The world is beautiful.

I suppose that stimulants overuse in the long term would be one of the best comparisons to schizophrenia.

Anticholingernic drugs such as Diphenhydramine or Datura would probably have acute effects that most mimic schizophrenia.

I dunno why anyone is really suggesting traditional psychedelics...

Wow how could I forget that one!!? If you read about plateau sigma in the DXM FAQ (can be found on Erowid in DXM vault) it sounds A LOT like schizophrenia.

DXM! That's right. Dissociatives definitely can provoke psychotic responses rather close to real psychosis, in fact I've had ketamine cause a number of psychotic symptoms, including apophenias and auditory hallucinations like voices.

I completely agree, my diphenhydramine experience a year ago was extremely unpleasant, but it was the closest I have ever been to true insanity (hearing voices, seeing people, shadow beings, delerium). DXM and other dissociatives can also be very psychotic, what about PCP?

This is a strange question, and the answers are certainly going to be drugs that are considered "psychedelic" or deliriants.

Back in the 60's when lots of people were conducting legal research on LSD, psilocybin, DMT, etc. some psychologists had the theory that psychedelics could help reverse the effects/symptoms of schizophrenia and other mental dis-orders because they supposedly caused people who didn't suffer from these disorders to show symptoms similar to schizophrenia so they were hoping the reverse would be true for patients who did suffer from mental disorders... I think they were just hoping, but I can't say for sure.

Eventually all these drugs became illegal and it became taboo to do research on them, I don't think they've ever found any conclusive evidence/proof that a psychedelic helps someone with schizophrenia or any other mental disorder yet.
I'd say most tryptamines and the more psychedelic phenethylamines can cause psuedo-schizophrenic behavior in some people.. Psychedelics just tend to make you really introverted and some of the symptoms such as hallucinating may be vaguely similar to what some people with severe mental disorders experience in their daily life.

I railed a big line and for the next 45 min-hour I had like this fucked up psychotic break.. my vision was all fucked to hell, I kept turning my head real quick to see these "people" (who weren't there) who kept laughing at me.. I mean I really felt like I was losing it.. really heard goofy crazy sounding laughter everywhere.. then I looked out the front window of my house and saw 5 people walking hand in hand in a line coming towrds me/my house.. then I went outside with a baseball bat 2 min later and they were nowhere to be seen..

Amphetamines don't definitely cause true psychosis. I have known lots of HEAVY amphetamine users, and only some became psychotic. Others would just become really aggressive and out of it. Some would suffer paranoia but not true delusions. But they can trigger psychosis in some people, impossible to predict who...

I read about some biowarfar chemical, which is extremely potent, and probably would be the closest you could get to going stark raving mad. In my opinion though you would have to be a complete idiot to try and induce psychosis in yourself, thats just asking to mess up your brain- for good possibly.

I was wondering which psychoactive best mimics the hallucinations schizophrenia produces.

From a purely scientific point of view, PCP is actually the drug that induces a state that most accurately mimics the symptoms of schizophrenia.

My younger brother is actually doing his thesis studying some enzymes that are associated with schizophrenia, in which they have to "induce" schiziophrenia in rats. The drug they're using is PCP for that very reason.
