Hi, would like to know if while taking the drugs Lamictal and Depakote for epilepsy and Toprol for an irregular heart beat if it would interact negatively with cannabis. also has hydrocephalus with a V.P. shunt in left frontal lobe. has never taken cannabis before and is very interested but would like to be safe first, am only getting spin from doctors and professionals looking to avoid liability. Don't know where else to turn to. Thanks! =]

Lamictal - 100 mg twice daily
Depakote - 500 mg twice daily
Toprol - 25 mg in the A.M.

oh first of all, we don't SWIM here. It's you. Everyone knows. Say hi to the DEA (They have much bigger things to worry about).

Cannabis will not interact with either of those medications. And the beta-blocker Toprol won't be an issue either. If you have Valium or another Benzodiazapine scripted also for use when you do have a seizure, stay away from mixing benzos with marijuana, but that is all. And try not to mix marijuana with alcohol with those medications.

Otherwise you are fine, make sure you are comfortable and your mood and environment positive when you first try cannabis.

^ muvolution answered the question, and we don't allow "SWIM" here...we all know it's you. PLEASE use first person pronouns in the future. I'm going to edit your first post and move it into our thread for cannabis with other drugs.

Actually, the person who posted as SWIM was posting as someone who literally isn't ME.

I was the person who was curious about said drugs and my condition. What about with the Hydrocephalus? Also is it okay to ask your credentials? I don't mean to pry but I would like to be as safe as possible.

I am not entirely sure myself.

Have you asked the doctors? They should be able to tell you what to/not to take.

The pamphlets your medications come with can also give you a general idea of what you can/can't take alongside it/them. Unfortunately, not many interactions with cannabis and other pharnaceutical drugs have been tested formally, so I don't want to misinform you at all.

Have you tried smoking cannabis before? If you were to try it now, have you considered going the vaporized/oral route instead of smoking? Nonetheless, be careful to titrate out small dosages to test for how it is going to effect you. I believe depending on where your body stands, and what strain you have, it is possible for weed to stimulate or depress you.

==========

Weed Combos:

Weed + buprenorphine: very good
Weed + alprazolam: decent, but I don't do benzos frequently
Weed + dexedrine: very good

as my friend swimfan stated, they keep giving me the runaround.

Tell your doctors you are going to smoke pot one way or another and you need to know if there will be issues. You could try and get a script for dronibinol if there is no MMJ in your state, just to avoid the hassle of dealers and questionable weed, etc...

Just want to clarify that for medical reasons, one should avoid taking benzodiazapines with cannabis as they both act on GABA. Also, you shouldn't be drinking alcohol with the lamictal anyways, but definitely not alcohol and marijuana with your condition.

oh, theres marijuana here (so cal)

I know your thread got merged into here because it was talking about combining pot with other drugs, but it was more like combining pot with other medication.... maybe Purple Cloud could un-merge it since you really have a very specific set of circumstances which isn't really served by this thread. Yours is more of a medical/ safety question, this is more of a "gettin high" thread.

You might PM her and ask if she will un-merge it, or you could try a new thread like "Safety issues for epileptics re: use of cannabis and other recreational substances."

Due to a mod's request, I unmerged this and made it it's own thread again. While combinations of medication + cannabis belong in CD's Combination thread, I'm going to move this to BDD for more replies. In the future, OP, please send me a PM yourself if you have an issues, and not to a mod of a different forum.

BDD, if you don't think it belongs, do what you will/close it/try it in OD.

if you're worried about a fit I strongly suggest you speak to your attending physician and be honest, let them know you want to use cannabis, but emphasize your worries, try a strain with a higher cbd>thc ratio (indica) than (sativa) if you can and just take it easy

To be honest, unless a doctor has experience with medical marijuana or prescribing to a lot of pot-heads they wouldn't necessarily know the answer and would probably just say "stay away from drugs!"

As muvolution said there are no obvious contraindications as far as I can see.

I doubt you are going to get people posting their credentials on here I'm afraid.. but you are right to be wary of random people on the internet, I applaud that!

I'm epileptic and am prescribed Dilantin (phenytoin sodium) 100mg 3x's a day and Valium (diazepam) 10mg 3x's a day. I don't smoke near the amount of marijuana that I used too (to avoid any legal repercussions) however I was quite the pothead for many years (15+) and never had any bad side effects/interactions from said use. I can only speak for my own experiences however. Good luck.

this thread makes me nervous. bluelight cannot tell you smoking weed will not have any negative effects concerning your epilepsy. or that it is ok to smoke weed with your condition. i guess people can share their experiences though. we will see how things go.

i have no idea what the answer is, but THC having a inhibiting effect on GABAergic neurons might be a source of concern.

^"one" as in people in general? or OP specifically?
