Drugs and study an unfair advantage?

ummm, yeah i highly doubt doing stims give you an edge. Just learn to fucking hold more knowledge, I've never 'studied' for a test once, and always get 90%+

Drugs cause cognitive problems, they don't fix them. Piracetam etc on the other hand, one might be able to call its effects advantageous? but certainly not unfair - if you're smart enough to improve cognitive function, you deserve the higher scores.

My advice if you want an unfair advantage.

Be Organised or naturally gifted. If your both, shiteee.

In seriousness stimulants will just keep you awake and increase brain activity, now if this increased up time is not used effectly or in the right way you may as well sleep better, eat better, and organise your time.

IMO do assignments in the morning, chill in the arvo/night.

Drugs are a disadvantage, however if you have ADD, sometimes it can help. So that just gets you back to the norm.

^ You are spot on mate. I mean I do think stimulants are an advantage some procrastinators have over others, because when a deadline draws near you can cram it in, but the fact is anybody would be better off prioritising their time well and getting a head start on their assignments, that is the real way to do well.

Yes that is me, elprocrastinator.

So basically we agree that drugs help study duds (me) achieve better results when cramming or during exams?

^ Yes, I do agree if you don't manage your time well then drugs are an advantage, but good time management will likely lead to a better result than cramming with stimulants.

I cant stress time management enough as being the biggest advantage for students.

I dont know what level of education those results come from MrIbis, but I found that all through highschool I was able to acheive top of the year results very easily simply by rocking up to the exam's hangover and all. This doesnt apply at an undergrad level sadly.

Generally speaking, those who have access to stims suitable for study have them for a reason, ie. adhd. Therefore by taking these stimulants, they're not giving themselves an unfair advantage they're simply evening the playing feild by compensating for a sub-standard dopamine system with chemical assistance. So in that respect I dont in any way see it as un-fair.

But, if in the case of the american friend mentioned by the OP, getting thrown some ritalin just for the sake of cramming. Yeah that is definatey un-fair, and wouldnt happen in australia. I had to go through three months of bullshit to obtain my script and in all likely hood I do probably have ADHD, but it was just that I was naturally "gifted" acedemically speaking and was always ahead of the pack that my symptoms went unnoticed. Growing up in a very small country town where people are unaware of these conditions probably plays a part to.

Being naturally gifted is about the only advantage you have against the rest of the pack, anything else you can do to help your study is your decision and you make choices that you think best suit you, the same as anyone else. If stimulants are one of those choices then you have to wear any consequences that go with it. So I dont see it as an advantage, its just a choice you made to benefit yourself. People without the stims make the same choices, just with differant outcomes.

I definitely see stimulants as an advantage in that they can allow normally disorganized people to get their shit together and study properly, they are a huge help to me in that regard but I have no chance of being prescribed them due to my condition.

Instead I have to try and study the hard way... :\

^ Its fucked isn't it. I just realised I have 3 of my major assignments due next week and I have hardly made a start on them! To make matters worse I can't seem to click the bloody log out button on here and actually focus! Luckily I have a little bit of MDPV, I am seriously thinking it may be a sleepless weekend, as I will no doubt manage to waste every minute between now and the weekend without starting. Such laziness really is a curse, nobody but myself to blame though.

L3inade I don't think anyone is arguing that therapeutic use of stimulants is an advantage, although it is definately possible for those prescribed them to use in a manner they aren't prescribed for ie. cram studying and this would be an advantage. Personally I think its all fair anyway, it really shouldn't be a competition and even if you choose to view it that way the playing field is NEVER going to be level, what difference is one small factor?

^ Yeah I always used to leave stuff 'til late. I can't get speed now but when I could in high school I would do a couple of lines then stay up all night writing not only my assignments but assignments for other students at $50 a pop, guaranteed A's all the way. :D

Luckily where I am studying now is really understanding of my situation.

^ I don't think they are very likely to be understanding of mine, seeing as how I have currently missed 2 weeks straight of classes with no contact with any teachers or students. Fucking silly, honestly just got caught up doing nothing and don't know where the fucking time went! Really regret not putting it to better use, but what can I do other than try be more efficient now. The fact I am still posting on here and starting work in 1 minute suggests to me I probably wont be though. Haha!

^ ah thats no good.

If your anything like me i bet you said last semester, 'I'll get started on everything early so i can have more time and be lessed stressed'. Well, this semester is no different, and I have done very little and now have to work my arse off.

if you makes you feel any better, i think 90% of students are like us. at least the ones I know are.

Hehe, will this is my first semester since I graduated high school in '07 but I am saying I will do it better next semester and I did say at the start I would do better than high school. Shit never changes, its funny how right I thought I was when all through high school teachers told me bad study habits were impossible to get out of. I thought I knew it all but they were bang on...

haha. you pick up better techniques and habits as you progress through uni. like better ways of learning alot of material. it kind of happens out of necessity, due to the sheer volume of material.

My study habits were shit in first year. being either drunk or hangover all the time didn't help either;)

^ I am in TAFE atm, although considering uni for next year depending how things go. I really am hoping my study habits get better with time because I honestly think with my current work ethic if this wasn't just cer 4 I probably would be failing hard.

I don't see what the big deal is really. Even if it is an unfair advantage you may as well take it. If it gets you better grades that gets you a better job thats all that matters. This is the rest of your life your talking about here and you may as well do what ever you can to give yourself a cut above the rest. Don't take your advantage away because its "unfair" on the others, screw the others.

This is our modern world, life isn't fair, adapt or die.

Man Prescription Stimulants are the most powerful weapons ever in School. Like I had terrible ADHD in Highschool, but I was lucky enough to be able to actually focuse really well on subjects I liked, but as soon as i found them boring in the slightest way my brain would literally turn off. I was also I good audio learner so i would remember everything discussed in class rather than having to study for hours at night. However that only got me so far so at the end of Year 11 I got prescribed Ritalin, Dexies and Slow Release Dexys and Rits (My Doc was using me as an experiminet)

Getting prescribed the Stimualants was the best and worst thing ever for my Highschool. Like in the beginining it was amazing! I went from being able to study for 20 minutes at the most to be able to sit and study like a zombie for like 6 hours straight... However the longer you use these drugs the bigger toll they take on your physcical and mental health. Like you completely lose your appetite, you start to lose your personality as the inner zombie takes over and after awhile you start getting hell depressed on the comedowns once the drugs start to wear off. Plus I fell alittle too in love with Ritalin, and went from eating two R10s a day to Snorting 10 R10s a day (Like I honestly used to take toilet breaks to crush up Rits and snort them in the Bathrooms)... So winded up with a chronic Ritalin addiction just after 1st semester exams which meants I had to cold turkey for 2 months without drugs because my new doc cancelled all prescriptions to everything, which meants my 3rd term results were terrible because i had no natural concentration because the stimulants had just sucked it all out of me.

I did rebound really well for 4th Term with some excellent results and then for the Final Exams I used Ritalin but only in the most prescribed amounts and I ended up getting 4 As in my Finaly 4 TER Exams and a TER Score of 92.4 So I was pretty happy, but yeah in sum these things can be a blessing and a curse, just becareful with this shit and make sure you take it easy with using them recreationally...

Haha yeah. Im starting to see how addiction could definately be an issue with some people. I'm prescribesd 30mg a day and even that can start to take a psychological hold on you. I've been hitting it rather hard lately, with end of semester and exams and have been taking my full 3 most days (any day that requires study) but have gotten past my d-day where everything was due and am now on the 3rd day of a full detox. ie. no weed, no ritalin lol.

Definately was slightly irratible (just noticable) the first couple of days, but nothing to bad. All good now though, so I figure self enforced breaks are definately a requirement regardless of what the doc says. I cant think of anything worse than having to take something just to feel normal.

Stay safe kids, be it study tweaking or weekend benders. Everyone needs to find their limits, and stick to it when dealing with such substances.

EDIT::

Snorting ritalin!?? Are you insane? lol

I did that twice, the second time reminded me why I only did it the ounce xD
God does it burn, unlinke dexies which go up there without even the slightest bit of irritation.
Then again, I dislike putting things up my nose in general, maybe its easier for some people but I just dont see the point with ritalin. Works far better orally for me anyway. Feels kinda edgy when insuffulated.

I was an absolute studying machine in high school landing a 95+ TER, and this was back when I was untouched by drugs and alcohol...
Personally I really feel Uni encourages bad habits to form in the first few years of the degree by how all the assessments and whatnot are set up :\

tr3jo I used to sniff those beautiful little MP10s and R40s all damn day in year 9 and 10. It really does make school a lot more fun and I was getting top marks at the time too!

meth helps me get through a ton of work but i didnt like doing the actual exam on it
