Drugs and Spirituality Poll Series

Now unshaped, so I'm willing to bring the survey online soon! Once I get home tonight I'll add an age prompt for the spiritual shift question. Do you think the "did drugs affect this change" question is still relevant in that case?

As for multiple shifts, it might be easiest to ask for details of only the last shift, and simply add a yes/no "were there more" question.

Opinions?

Hey Raw Evil, how do you get to a page where you can see everyone's votes? I took it (nicely done!), but then hoped I could see the results so far.

While that would be nice, exposing such a page externally (to non-admins) could skew the results. This is also why I took the survey immediately after activating it (and before updating this thread). When I get home I will PM you a link to the reults page though, since it's a team project :)

Again, the question is: if someone answers "not sure", what use do we have for this information and any that comes of it? Is "not sure" actually measurable in some way?

Well, of course Bourdieu argues that "not sure" or "don't know" responses express meta-information about the survey and the individual's relation to the relevant social spaces and field, particularly in terms of her position therein. For example, in Bourdieu's research, the high preponderance of "don't know" responses among working classes reflects socialization into a habitus incapable of transforming practical interests into legitimated political discourse (for upper class-fractions determine what such discourse looks like according to their habitus).

So in this case, maybe "don't know" marks specific relations to the sub-field of drawing meanings and systems thereof from drugs. I don't know which locations (in a wide Bourdieuian sense) in which social spaces'd be relevant though.

I'm taking the survey now, great idea!

It's hard to say for me how I like the effects of some drugs, I don't use some of the drugs now adays and so I forget what most of my experiences were like. In this case I'm often choosing neutral. I do remember disliking a fair number of alcohol and tobacco exp's though (which is why I stopped using these years ago and never would use them again, I was never addicted to them either, too dysphoric to continue using! lol) - so I'm going with what I remember.

For all the other categories I remember well. :)

I don't really know what "affected my life in general" means so I'm going to go with my overall interpretation of what I feel that means.

I'm also going to consider "recreational" to include medicinal aside from spiritual, since medicinal is "closer" to recreational (cancer drugs aren't spiritual, for example). I hope I'm not misinterpreting the question.

It might have been useful if we had more demographic information, but I would think that getting people to resolve their doubt to an answer would give us a clearer picture of the information we're going for.

Interesting idea though.

Where were you the other week when I could have edited the survey? :P Ah, hindsight :)

It's been running on my web server here for a couple of months now. Last I checked we had 150 responses, which was last week sometime.

Which reminds me: how big of a sample are we after?

I am taking the survey now. It is kinda vague as I have had many shall we say epiphany's or realizations over the years. Like when it asked me at what age did a particular view or belief change. My beliefs are always subject to modification. I have had many twists of faith. Some inspired by mind altering drugs but most not.

I am still taking the survey though. (Its running slow) I hope you find if there is a correlation or something between people willing to experiment w/ drugs and spirituality (or not) as you stated previously.....%)

Okay, I think out might be time to collate this data and try to garner some wisdom from it soon.

Anyone know though about statistics to suggest a target sample size? I think we had somewhere around 180 responses when I checked last week.
