Drugs and reading literature (books, poems, etc.)

Alcohol has always made reading an assigned novel for school much more interesting. Not getting drunk but taking a few swigs and sitting down to read always made me enjoy the book more, it made it more emotional and connectable. Vyvanse made me enjoy poetry more and let me appreciate literature written in old English (well Shakespearean and Victorian literature) which normally ends up slowing my reading speed down dramatically and confusing me to some extent. Hell, I hated Shakespeare until I had to read and analyze Julius Caesar while speeding. After that experience I actually enjoyed reading the rest of the book. Analyzing any book while on d-amp is so much easier for me and I'm pretty good at that when I'm sober. Normally on speed though I end up reading non-fiction articles on the web or learning about the pharmacology and mechanism of action of drugs (usually amphetamines... lol).

I've been meaning to try reading with psychedelics next time I trip. But although my friends tell me they love reading stoned, I can't even understand a paragraph. I'm a little worried that stronger psychs will have the same effect as weed to me as far as reading goes. Any ideas on it?

But what drugs make reading more enjoyable or at least different for everyone else?

ganja is good for reading. lsd or mushies can be good too, usually on the come up or after the peak though

i too love reading on dex...meth to a lesser extent
 
On psychedelics the letters often end up vibrating, spinning, moving around the page or oscillating is a sinusoidal fashion when I try to read then. Not condusive to reading IME
 
I like ganja for all reading, especially poetry and novels. Stims are good for novels, non-fiction and textbooks
 
I've found that while smoking pot makes it hard for me to concentrate on a story, it makes doing self-motivated research waaay more fun.

I can't read a novel of any kind for shit when I'm stoned, honestly. My favorite for plain reading is simple caffeine.

This is so fucking true, haha. Or watching a movie... "Who's that character that was introduced 10 minutes after I nodded off?"

Oxycodone, however, is fairly fucking decent to read on... nice bit of stimulation and such :)

I think this belongs in the Doing ____ on _____ thread though lol

It's funny because it's true. =D

I guess stims would be the best. However, since I don't really like stims all that much anymore, a modest dose of oxy or some tramadol would be fine by me aswell.
 
Having my degree in English, and dope being my drug of choice, well... I've tried, but reading just does not seem to work when I'm all high.

Damn, that sounds terrible man lol. However, it kind of is how reading when I'm stoned works. I can't put the sentence together and by the time I get to the end of the paragraph I have no idea what I just read. But would reading on low doses of opiates (say 10-20mg of Vicodin or Oxy) have a similar effect on reading (obviously to a much lesser extent)? When I think about those sort of doses of painkillers I can still function in school relatively well but I open up a lot socially and anxiety is gone -- a lot like getting tipsy works for me in school, except with a greater body high with the pills -- which I thought might end up giving me a more emotional connection to the literature plus I feel great. Would it do anything like that at low doses?

I can listen to 3-4 audio books a week, and remember them (ie, the whole story) without even trying.
They are also a blessing when going through withdrawal.

I agree, reading while buzzed on alcohol, but not drunk, is very enjoyable. I wish I could say I enjoy reading while high on weed, I'm definitely more interested in the subject, but it's pretty much what the first responder of this thread said about reading on heroin. I read a paragraph or two without really comprehending it, then have to go back and reread it 2 or 3 times, and I still dont absorb as much as sober. I think the same would be said if I tried to read while tripping, either it would be the same as with weed, or I'd be too focused on the warping and bending of the letters to even try, hahah.

yeh well its obviously not for everyone. cool name btw, i love cream! i bet you get the above effects when looking at the albums cover art no? hehe
