Drug used in wisdom teeth removal

I think i mite have to get my wisdom teeth out soon....im 23 and i thought if you had to get your wisdom teeth out most people get them out before the age of 18....but i guess i was the excpetion. I was wondering what drug i should expect to get when having the process done.
 
when i had mine out (at 18) i didn't get anything. novacaine during. no sedatives and nothing for pain after. thankfully my mom had plenty of vicodin and helped me out the first few days. that doc was a jerk.
 
I would expect to receive either percocet (oxycodone/APAP) or vicodin (hydrocodone/APAP) for this procedure. You could expect either of these medications in either 5 or 10 mg strengths provided your doctor knows you are non opiate tolerant, and one or two of either of these every 4-6 hours should take care of your pain pretty well.

In regards to DURING the procedure, that will depend. If your teeth came in normally it usually won't require being put under. So more likely just novicaine, maybe nitrous oxide as well to relax you. But if your teeth are impacted (sideways), then they have to do a little more surgery and will put you under, usually with a combination of fentanyl/midazolam. This will keep you out, and take care of the pain during the procedure as well.

Afterwards I would expect maybe a week's worth of vicoden/percocet if you are lucky. Possibly codeine. since there will be swelling afterwards, taking ibuprofen is actually quite effective as it is an anti-inflammatory.

Most people have them out when they are younger, but it isn't abnormal to have them out during your 20's. I had them out when I was 21, and had two impacted teeth that required being put under. It wasn't very bad at all. Sore for a few days, but nothing heroin couldn't take care of, lol.
 
I had all 4 of mine out when I was about 34, 3 of them were impacted.

Had it done under general anaesthetic in a hospital, and got a shitload of codeine to take home.

fuckin terrible.
 
Hey dude, I actually just got my 4 wisdom teeth out yeterday!
Not that uncommon to get them out after 18 at all, I'm 21, my sis got them out when she was 22. The best time to get them out is in or before your early twenties so Mailmonkey, dude, I feel for ya.

I was put under general anesthetic. Was on a morphine drip during the surgery, when I woke, was back in my room and after a bit I was still in pain so I got difene through iv, then bout an hour later pain still wasn't gone so this time I got a capsule of what I think was oxycodone but I'm not entirely sure, I forgot to ask the nurse and was slightly more preoccupied with eating for the first time in quite a while!

Any ways afterwards I was prescribed...

Antibiotic:
Augmentin (penicillin)
Super important you take these properly and take them all dude, if you don't you're more than likely get an infection (Not taking the antibiotic is the #1 reason for people having to go back to the doctor/dentist)

Pain relief:
Difene 50mg (dicofenac 50mg) & Solpadeine (paracetamol 500mg, caffeine 30mg & codeine 8mg)
Solpadeine is an OTC painkiller here and it's for between difene doses.
I was also prescribed OxyNorm 5mg (oxycodone 5mg) only to be dispensed if the above mix wasn't working.

I've been told by people who got similar surgery that swapping the solpadeine for nurofen plus (ibuprofen&codeine mix) works a bit better

Was quite sore yesterday evening when most of the morphine from the hospital wore off but seemed to be doing okay with the difene & solpadeine, however waking up this morning and after taking my first round of difene was in quite a lot of pain so I got the oxycodone and it's doing the job nicely. I'm now not entirely painfree but I'm perfectly comfortable and able to eat and talk etc now

Brokedown hit it on the head. Your doctor will probably be happy to tell you if you ask him/her nicely. That's what mine did.
 
Whether or not you're prescribed them, make sure to be using NSAIDs as well - ibuprofen or naproxen (motrin or aleve respectively) because there will certainly be inflammation and it will provide more pain relief with any opioids you're prescribed then taking the latter alone.

We've had many threads like this in OD and BDD and what people are prescribed varies wildly depending on the attitudes of the dentist and severity of the procedure. Some people have reported getting a month's worth of 10mg percocet while others have received nothing at all. Most common seems to be about 1 week worth of vicodin or tylenol 3 with codeine since darvocet has fallen out of favor.

^yup.

you are worried about during the process? hasn't your doc not sat you down and explained the options? you get laughing gas plus local and stay awake (you will not care, because of the gas), or you get the midaz/fent and wake up when it's all over. i think people already mentioned that too.

hope the teeth come out with minimal problems and he/she writes something appealing on the blue pad for you.
