ST. GEORGE — When parents send their kids to school they expect them to learn, not shoot heroin between class periods.

“I do believe there are more youth addicted to heroin than the community would like to believe. I believe that with all my heart,” said Millcreek High Principal Terry Ogborn.

Ogborn has worked in the Washington County School District for nearly 30 years — most of those years at Millcreek High, an alternative school for youth who struggle in traditional high schools.

Ogborn said she’s seen an increase in drug abuse among the youth throughout the years.

“The access to drugs in the community is amazing to me,” she said. “There’s a lot of drug use, alcohol use and much more homelessness than there has been in the past.”
St. George Police Lt. Gordon McCracken supervises school resource officers. He said one student has been arrested on charges of possession of heroin this year.
“It’s (heroin) definitely on the upswing,” he said. “It’s a trendy drug to do right now.”
McCracken said teachers and officers still confiscate a lot of tobacco, cold syrup and the occasional alcohol and pain pills.

To help prevent substance abuse, McCracken said, officers go into health classes where students learn about problems associated with alcohol and drugs. Officer Travis Brown, resource officer for Snow Canyon High School, is one of many officers who talks to teenagers. Brown said when he goes into a classroom he tries to start with the basics: alcohol and tobacco.

“We talk about how they’re gateway drugs and the mental and physiological affects,” he said.

Brown said he also talks about how addictive prescription medications can be and how they can lead to heroin use.

i live in washington and i picked up a heroin habit this year but i quit and am slowly leaning off with percs i am out of school tho and i can tell you this is bullshit heroin isn't getting more popular meth is the BIG thing everywhere you look is a methhead in every goddamn city around here

if pot was legally available and the genetics were perfected kids wouldn't fuck with hard shit. Bomb weed will get you just as lifted

^ I disagree with that completely. even if marijuana's "genetics" were perfected, it still couldn't possibly appeal to everybody. some people might just not dig pot, and would like to entertain the idea of a different high

Yup. I don't like weed, so it being legal wouldn't do much for me, I'd still 'fuck with hard shit.'

This article is about Washington County in Utah, not Washington State. That said, I'd be surprised if heroin were actually becoming popular in southern Utah of all places.

I do believe there are less youth addicted to heroin than the principal would like to believe. I believe that with all my heart.

with genetics they way they are now you can create a custom high to fit anyones needs, and it is just getting better.. i dunno, I think a whole lot less people would be doing hard stuff

Good thing that a cop who doesn't know much about drugs is teaching kids.
Especially good that he starts with the basics; the basic myth of the gateway drug is the first fallacy that every good cop should teach as truth. :\

technology will catch up, guys. we're starting to really get into our thick skulls, literally and figuratively.

don't worry, there will be tools of euphoria so amazing that you'll have the same attitude about your kids using these tools as your parents' attitude about you using heroin ;)

go heroin.

better than meth unless you get a hefty habit and then access is intermittent.

And if legally available and regulated, the only real problems caused by addiction, once the financial cost had been exponentially reduced, and the major health risks related to anything but unsafe injection practices if a user chooses to inject were eliminated, would be related to the presence of a physical dependency, and to laziness/inefficacy related to sustained, ridiculous dosing in those reckless types who do far worse things to themselves under the current system.

Along with the others, I disagree about marijuana legalization significantly reducing the use of harder drugs...the only way that that makes sense is if an individual chooses to use harder drugs because they're introduced to them through pot peddlers, or if an individual decides to replace weed with them because they're slightly easier to hide...neither of which is at all common. Many people simply do not like marijuana. I have no problem with others using it, but I absolutely hate everything about the stuff (the smell, the available ROAs, the bulk, the culture that comes with it, the attitude that there's absolutely nothing wrong with smoking any quantity of it at any time, the attitude that driving stoned is always as safe as driving sober,) and wouldn't use it ever, under any circumstances.

great line to introduce the article there.... "...Not to shoot heroin between class periods..."

I really doubt that the kids are shootin the dope, if they even doing it. most of the kids who just start with dope sniff it.i dont know where 'washington' is at, but even if its somewhere that itsonly tar available, there is still ways that kids figure out to use it like dissolving in water and drippin it up their nose, etc. Or smoking it. I highly doubt that all these kids are just bootin up in the bathroom. if its so common then why aint they even talkin about catching even one kid shootin dope at school?

Just another stupid ass bullshit ignorant line from stupid ignorant 'journalists' who assume that shooting is the only way to use heroin.

I used to date a girl who shot dope in high school and I knew another girl who was an IV heroin addict in high school. I mean its probably 1 in 1000 or so but it happens. This was like 5 years ago before the most recent heroin trend.

And in an alternative HS that's all the kids who got kicked out of school so I'd assume the chances are higher. Its not an epidemic or anything but it definitely exists.

is he saying heroin is a gateway drug in this article? LMAO gateway to what...addiction, hepatitus, HIV and death from overdose?

I do believe there are less youth addicted to heroin than the principal would like to believe. I believe that with all my heart.

I can list 20-30 people who i went to high school with that were addicted to heroin, and i can only think of 1 off the top of my head who got arrested before graduating/dropping out. I didn't have a huge high school either. Just ebcause you use heroin, doesn't mean your going to get arrested instantly.

Customize my weed to feel like heroin, please!

lol doable probably! given enough time and isolating the right cannibanoids you could take all it's euphoric and pain killing potential and combine it with something that keeps you fairly clear headed and not paranoid. Crose enough =p
