Drug tests catch out 10 police

Ten Scotland Yard officers were caught using illegal drugs including cocaine, heroin and cannabis over the last year.

Officers employed by the London force can be subjected to substance and alcohol misuse testing at any time.

New figures revealed three of the officers proved positive for banned drugs during random tests by a team of officials.

The officers took either cocaine, heroin or cannabis. Two resigned and the third was sacked after a misconduct hearing.

The positive tests were only a tiny proportion of the 815 random substance misuse tests that took place in the 12 months up to November.

Officials tested a further 11 officers after colleagues became suspicious they may be using drugs during the same period.

Of these tests, four people tested positive for cannabis and three for cocaine. Six officers resigned and one is waiting for the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.

There were 346 random breath tests and no one recorded a positive result, and 231 pre-employment tests also proved negative.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The Met has a duty of care to its officers, its staff and the people of London. The purpose of substance misuse testing is to ensure that members of the Met are deterred from engaging in substance misuse and, where individuals place themselves, others and the organisation at risk from such misuse, they are identified and dealt with appropriately."

The Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents frontline officers, said: "An officer who abuses drugs poses a safety risk to his colleagues. And for an officer to commit a criminal act by using an illegal substance is quite obviously unacceptable."

A shame that they have to be punished for gentle drugs like marijuana, though they could drink after work and not have any problem. Alcohol is a strong drug that is responsible for millions of deaths around the world every year; marijuana is (arguably) not responsible for any deaths at all.

Free our herbs, and allow us to free our minds!

Good riddance, fuck cops who use drugs! I don't have anything against using drugs but if your going to persecute and arrest drug users you damn well shouldn't be using them yourself.

^ I agree 100%. I'm pretty sure that lots of cops in my hometown help themselves to a portion of the seized drugs whenever the make a bust, and either use it themselves or sell it on for a profit. Scumbags.

I'm surprised that they've taken the US approach of drug tests at work, but I'm not surprised that cops use drugs. They've got a tough job with lots of stress and if I was in their position I'd be doing whatever I could to get my mind off the job.

+1

Imo most cops are alright and so are most drug users. Always extremes in any group and whilst I wouldn't wish harm on them, they deserved to be fired for such hypocrisy.

This makes me so fucking happy. Hypocrite police are the lowest.

The police are the biggest abusers of double-standards going. Come down on you like a tonne of bricks if you step out of line while driving, but they drive around breaking rules with virtually complete impunity.

I think they should perform more random testing on police officers. I know plenty of coppers who think it is ok to use cocaine and cannabis at the weekend and then whilst at work, destroy somebody's life by arresting and charging them with posession.

In London, the Met have significantly increased the amount of drugs operations they do using sniffer dogs in public places like tube and train stations in order to catch recreational users. It is a lot easier for them to do somebody for posession than it is to go after the main dealers. Very easy way for them to bump up their crime detection rates, whilst at the same time making absolutely no difference to the overall safety of Londoners.

I know if it is your first time that you are only likely to get a caution, even if you are carrying cocaine as long as it is for personal use. However I can imagine that being arrested is an extremely unpleasant and undignified experience. It may also mean that you lose your job and end up on the DNA database.
