Drug stigmatas and hyprocity

Good morning all.
[if a moderator chooses to move this to a different part of the forum, please pm me.]

I was wondering if any one else has found anything simular to this in their travels.

I have a fair few friends who regualy give me shit for my drug usage.
They claim that they hate drugs and dont need them.
The thing is, most of these friends are raging alcoholics.

Recently one of them was describing how on a night out on the town last saterday, he finished a whole bottle of (whatever) and then hit the beer, and in the morning he was throwing up ALL day, with a head-splitting headache that lasted all sunday.

Why dont people see that ethanol is still a drug?
And that the come down (can be/is) just as bad as any other drug?

I also have a few friends that often have a few dextroamphetamines to keep them awake, or hell, once in a while have a half dozen for a club.
But whenever i ask them if they would try speed, they look at me like i asked them for their soul.

Sure, street speed is more impure then dexxies...
But its still amphetamine!
"nah man, you dont know what those chemicals are doing to your body!" they say, inbetween puffs of their 12mg marlbrough reds.

Does anyone else see the stupidity in this?

3 points on this:

  • Dexies are amphetamine, less neurotoxic than methamphetamine
  • Dexies are made by pharmaceutical companies, employing a quality control factor.
  • Dosage is a known thing with dexies; it can vary widely with street gear

I won't go too much into the alcohol thing. There are certainly reasons for and against using alcohol in preference to other rec drugs. Some might say that alcohol has been around for longer, it's usually a known entity, and you usually recover after a big night. On the downside, it's quite toxic in large doses, it's available everywhere you go, and it's responsible for more deaths than illicit drugs.

IMO it's got more to do with social scenes; what's acceptable to the person and his/her mates, and perhaps also to do with fear of the unknown- what drugs may do to you- and other stigmas. For other people concern about work related problems is enough (on-site urine testing etc).

Let them have their fun. Perhaps in time to come you and / or your mates might do a complete turnaround. It's been known to happen :\

My girlfriend who does the occasional E, Has ben disowned be her friends who are visiously against it. This drives me crazy cos they brag about being so "off there face" on cowboys Or whateva Then continue their night falling around helplessly , being a target for every sleazy guy in the club. This really gets my blood flowing like mad!!! :X
Its pure ignorance!!!

Lack of education and knowledge can play a big part in this. The average Bluelighter would be fairly well educated (hopefully) about what they're putting into their body. They'd know what it does, dosage, the negative side affects, and the risks and dangers involved. Knowing this, they've still decided to take it.

However, the average person on the street is not so well educated. A lot of people only know what biased media or government organisations tell them, or rumours and 'facts' they've heard from a friend. With a lack of knowledge about illegal drugs, as well as the added social stigma of 'Drugs are bad', it's easy to see why some people look down so much on those who take drugs. Educating these people about drugs and giving them real information can help. If that fails, there's always the 'My body, not yours, and I'm not hurting anyone' argument.

yeh ive had to put up with this sorta thing aswell. no matter what you try do, people are either just dont believe you (when you argue with facts), just just plan dismiss what you before you can say anything.

these days i dont really have any friends that dont have similiar "party habbits" as me. which makes life easier :)

Yeah being a student in my final year I see this all the time, even with my friends. But as MoonlapseVertigo everyone is going to have a different knowledge on drugs, and a different influence from whatever or whomever.

There is only so much I can say to some of my friends about drugs and drug use. I try my best to give them the facts, but yes some are just ignorant alcoholics, and will never see where I am coming from ...I've learnt to deal with that.

I can understand their ignorance to a side they havn't seen because of what the media and government tries to tell people about drugs.

well one of my friends set up an intervention for me... some people got involved, others laughed and others just said it is up to him what he does to his body...

her thoughts were that she was happy the way she was, and she couldnt get happier, so she didnt need drugs... well i dont need drugs either but if something makes me happy ill do it...

im not going t obe stupid...

it angers me how people do that shit...

i just brought up things that werent illegal and she was ok with them.. at one point she said she would be ok with weed if it was legal?!?!?!

idiot...

she thinks that anything that is legal is ok, and anything illegal is simply bad!!!

then another friend, unrelated to this incident, tried to have a chat to me about drugs... this person is a highly religious person.. .like seriously seriously religious... and i convinced her that drugs were not as bad as she though.. and she tehn accepted that people do them and that it is ok..

go those 7 years of debating adn public speaking and then the last 2 years of law... not to mention all the wonderful thoughts i gathered off bluelight...

cause it's not silly. that's why we use the term "alcohol and drugs" ;)

it's easier to divide society and still generate revenue when you make the distinction. you = government

now excuse me while i go have my morning cup of stimulant, i mean coffee ;)
