Drug Peddlers Adopt Smart Strategies
By Toby Antony Published: 19th August 2014

KOCHI: Drug traffickers in the state have made smart changes to their selling strategy to evade detection, such as replacing ampoules with syringes for carrying prescription-less drugs.

One advantage of syringes is that the carriers can quickly eject the drug out if they confront a search squad. The other advantage is that syringes are more customer-friendly - the supplier comes to the customer and injects the drug into his body, according to Excise sleuths.

It was after the seizure of 550 ampoules of drugs in the city last week, the largest haul in the state, that the officials came to know about the modus operandi of drug suppliers.

T G Krishnakumar, inspector of the Enforcement Squad, said that two persons held with the ampoules last week had revealed that the ‘home-delivery system’ was becoming popular in circles of high-dose drug users.

“We have come across such information for the first time. After getting a call from the consumer, the supplier reaches the spot with drug-filled syringe and injects it on him. The advantage is that neither the supplier nor the user has to carry the ampoules, and can easily give the police and the Excise officials a slip. This is new,” he said.

However, one of the major concerns is the possibility of users contracting communicable diseases.

“As the suppliers are likely to use the same syringe on more than one customer there is a high chance of the spread of diseases like Hepatitis and HIV,” Excise official said.
