EAST ST. LOUIS • A drug dealer who shoved meat down the pants of a man who fatally overdosed on heroin instead of seeking medical help was sentenced today to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Tavis Doyle, 43, was convicted in U.S. District Court in February of three counts of distribution of heroin resulting in death, maintaining premises for distribution of controlled substances and distribution of crack cocaine to a person under the age of 21. The trial lasted two weeks.

Jonathan "J.J." Ward, of Effingham, Ill., bought heroin from Tavis D. Doyle on May 28, 2009, and died a day later inside Doyle's crack house on Walter Street in East St. Louis, prosecutors at his trial said.

They said Doyle refused to allow witnesses to call for help when Ward overdosed. Instead, he tried to revive Ward by putting frozen meat in his pants and insisting that Ward was still alive and "just needed to sleep it off."

Others took Ward to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis about 12 hours later. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was convicted of "distribution of heroin resulting in death".
But the real problem was that he didn't take the dying guy to the hospital, or call 911.
Then again, a large part of that is due to the crazy drug laws...
If drugs were legal, the quality of all heroin would be controlled, so an overdose would be much, much less likely.
Then, if it occurred, it would not be a risk to call 911.
So, first, I think we need to blame this on the drug war.

Second, the guy was a shit for not calling 911 or at least a taxi to take the dying man to the hospital, and he deserves jail time for that, if you ask me.

^ You're right victor, most importantly the guy wouldn't be dealing heroin since heroin would, including purity control laws, be procured via say, a pharmacy, rather than a street dealer.

I don't understand why he wanted to put meat in the guys pants but I'm guessing that was added, though truthful as it may be, for the added shock value and the ridiculousness of such actions. I don't think he should get life though, that seems really strict. If I was in the situation, I would've gotten rid of anything on me and called 911. I know its hard to say what one would do if they weren't put in the situation but someone's life is worth more than the drugs you'd have to get rid of to escape prosecution as I'm guessing everyone there was a user of some sort of drug.

Where do people get the idea that a cold, shriveled penis will somehow increase respiration?

I think FIRST we need to blame the guy who kept anyone from calling 911 or taking him to a hospiatal, and SECONDLY blame the drug war. The drug war is long and unchanging, it is the paradigm in which we live - a sudden overdose presents a chance to act immediately, and it is the responsibility of the people he was with to take that action rather than saying, " Well, if heroin was legal..."
It's not legal. Get over it and start adjusting your actions accordingly.

(not saying this dude used that as an excuse, it was probably more about greed, paranoia, and fear of jail)

I've never even seen heroin, much less tried it. Therefore, I think it is safe to say that I would do what I mentioned in my earlier post. Hell, I'm cutting back on almost all drugs anyway due to both legal reasons and my college classes starting monday. I don't think it is fair to discount the heroin being legal thing as now 2 countries have decrim'd. In those countries, I'm guessing it would be more likely that 911 would be called. I mentioned both the 911 contact and the legalization so I don't think what you said is fair, muvolution.

I'm not making a joke here but I don't think a cold, shriveled penis would do much of anything and I don't get why icing a penis would stop an OD. I was curious as the only stuff I know about heroin is what I've read on BL. I have no personal experience. I guess I shouldn't have spoken so soon but drugs can cause people to do/think strange things as I'm sure we all know.

For example, I'm sure there are people out there that attempt to get high from jenkem believing it really works.

For some reason there's a lot of people who are under the impression that pouring cold water, ice or another type of cold object can somehow snap someone out of an OD, which is obviously not going to work. At first I thought this guy was going to jail just because the other guy overdosed himself, but not allowing anyone to call 911 isn't right. Just call 911 and you'll have enough time to either hide your drugs somewhere or to get out of the area so you won't be arrested. Either way, you have to at least call 911 so the guy has a chance to survive. It's not right to let someone die like that. Very sad.

I already told my friends to just let me go when it happens and get rid of all evidence that they were with me. Toss my burner phone, take their rigs, get the fuck out of dodge and leave me a scene the landlady will never forget when she sees my bloated, slimy ass.

life in prison???

that is just fuct. i had a similar incident happen with 2 old using buddies, they had someone OD [dead] and than they put his body on some park bench so he could be found. very fucked up situation. if i remember correctly they got 10yrs and 12 yrs [the guy that got 12 yrs had already been to prison 3 times]. one of them is out now.

here is another case that happened in my area where the kids dropped off the body of their friend that OD in some shady alley in the west side of chicago. they ended up getting probation. interesting.

I blame the police its them who show up and start arresting people at the scene of the OD. I had it happen to a friend of mine he ODed friends called ambulance cops show up and arrested everyone in the house at the time. Now tell me knowing this is how its done are those people likely to call for help next time? There should be an amnesty law in evety state calling for help should not be a crime.

ya thats the way i heard it whoever is around or drops them off can be charged so its like a lose lose situation dont get me wrong i would do everything to save somebodys life i already have but what if your just in the wrong place at the wrong time but yet your the only one that would stand up and do the right thing and you still get in trouble

best comment i have ever read......

This is why ampules or vials of narcan have to be made available to ppl on the street. Every hard IV user of dope should have a vial of that shit around somewhere. Obviously it does no good if you are by yourself, but if you are using with other ppl, they literally have the antidote to save you without having to call the medics. Ive heard so many hilarious remedies for an OD, injecting milk, saltwater, ice to the genitals, put them in a cold shower ect im sure there are a bunch of other funny ones.

Lol, when i read the title of this thread i thought the guy shoved his meat in pants of somebody who was ODing. I'm glad this wasn't the case. That would've been disturbing as fuck lol.

You're totally right Slim - If the fear of calling for emergency medical help wasn't so high then perhaps this poor bloke could have survived :\
It's really a sad state of affairs when you fear for your own life being taken away from you due to someone's life being in your hands...
:(
